Anderson Silva has been competing in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) for over 20 years.

At 43 years old, Silva is reaching the end of his storied career. Despite repeated setbacks in recent years, many consider him to be the greatest of all-time. While fans might have known that Silva’s career was reaching its end, they weren’t exactly sure how much longer the Brazilian really planned on sticking around.

Now we know.

Speaking to media recently, Silva stated that he plans on fighting three more times before hanging up his gloves for good. Two names that stick out to “The Spider” the most before retiring are Georges St-Pierre and Conor McGregor (via MMA Weekly):

“I have three more and then it’s done. It’s over. At his point in my career, I believe that the good challenge is the super fight. I talk to Dana about Georges St-Pierre, about (Conor) McGregor, about McGregor especially because McGregor is a challenge, this fight. I just talk to Dana a lot about the fight that’s very interesting.”

Before he can worry about a potential fight against “GSP” or McGregor, Silva must first focus on the task at hand. He’ll be taking on rising middleweight star Israel Adesanya, a man who has drawn a lot of comparisons to Silva as of late. The Nigerian is coming hot off a knockout victory over Derek Brunson at UFC 230.

Silva will face Adesanya at the UFC 234 pay-per-view (PPV) from the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia on February 9, 2019.

Israel Adesanya has garnered the attention of many in the UFC’s middleweight division.

At UFC 230 last month, Adesanya put on a spectacular performance under the bright lights inside Madison Square Garden. He picked apart Derek Brunson for a first-round knockout win. The victory extended the Nigerian’s perfect mixed martial arts (MMA) record to 15-0. With the win, he’s looking to get on the fast track to a 185-pound title opportunity.

And what better way to earn a title shot than beating the greatest middleweight champion of all time? Adesanya will step into the cage to face Anderson Silva at UFC 234 on pay-per-view (PPV) from Melbourne, Australia on February 9, 2019. He recently did an interview with the UFC to discuss being paired up against “The Spider.”

Adesanya has been compared to Silva several times, a man who he himself believes is the greatest of all time. Initially Adesanya didn’t want to have to fight Silva out of respect, but after some discussion with his team, he realized it had to happen (via MMA Mania):

“For me, I didn’t want to (fight him) at first. I was on record saying there is no need. But I had to do it, I had this dream. I talked to my coaches and said, ‘Yeah, this is how it it supposed to play out.’

“The guy is the GOAT. But I am Nigerian and I’ve been eating goat since I was a kid. This is normal to me,” Adesanya said.

Adesanya and Silva do share one common denominator. Their latest victories inside the cage both come over Brunson. Silva defeated Brunson back in February of 2017 via unanimous decision. It was Silva’s first win since October of 2012.

Now, he’ll look to put together his first win streak in nearly seven years, but he’ll have to do it by beating one of the hottest young stars in the division today.

Anderson Silva will fight Israel Adesanya at UFC 234. To ready himself, the former middleweight champ has enlisted the help of the only man to knock out the “Stylebender”.

To help him prepare for the unbeaten phenom, Silva has turned to one of Adesanya’s former adversaries, Glory champion Alex Pereira. MMA Fighting’s Marc Raimondi reported that Silva has brought Pereira in to train with him in the lead-up to the Adesanya fight.

Pereira is a Brazilian fighter who currently holds the Glory Middleweight world title. He holds two key victories over “The Last Stylebender” under kickboxing rules. In 2016, Pereira and Adesanya first met with the Brazilian taking a decison win. Things got worse for Adesanya one year later when they rematched, as Pereira would knock the “Stylebender” out cold.

Watch below as Pereira uses his footwork to get inside the rangy Adesanya and ultimately land a vicious left hook.

Pereira scores most of his knockouts with his left hook. It’s likely he has been working with Silva on just that. That’s the very same weapon that he used to knock off Dustin Jacoby in a nasty KO found here.

Adesanya is reported to have a boxing record of 75-5-1. While boxing records aren’t always the most accurate, Pereira does account for two of those five losses.

It would seem like Silva has chosen wisely heading into his fight with “The Last Stylebender”. Since losing the middleweight strap to Chris Weidman back in 2013, Silva has scored only one win. He defeated Derek Brunson by decision in a fight that many people thought Brunson won.

Although he is widely considered the middleweight GOAT, he will be a sizable underdog when these two face off at UFC 234.
