Chael Sonnen suggests Herb Dean’s interference could be to blame for Jamahal Hill’s loss at UFC 300

Is Herb Dean to blame for Jamahal Hill’s loss to Alex Pereira?

Chael Sonnen seems to think so.

Closing out a spectacular night of fights at UFC 300, ‘Poatan’ successfully defended his light heavyweight title in the evening’s landmark main event, putting ‘Sweet Dreams’ to sleep with a booming left uppercut just past the three-minute mark.

While pundits have been focusing on Pereira’s knockout blow and his viral post-fight celebration, the three-time UFC title challenger noticed something nobody else has pointed out.

“I kept watching it and I finally saw something that I had never looked for,” Sonnen said on his YouTube channel. “I watched Herb Dean, then I looked back and I watched Alex, but what I never looked for is what Jamahal did. Have you? Because Pereira holds and hand up and even says something to Herb. ‘Stay back, I’m good.’

“That was great communication. Herb was going to break the action to check on him. Everybody is doing what they’re supposed to be, but Jamahal stops. Not 100%. I’m not saying he put it in park and got out, but he stops. He stopped doing what he was doing and started doing something else.”

“You’ve never seen a referee step in and a fighter tell him to get back,” Sonnen continued. “If the ref comes in after you know you just kicked the guy low, you’re going to have a break in the action. So, Jamahal begins that break in the action, when Herb gets notified and makes the decision that he’s going to get out of [the way]. …As [Jamahal] turns his head, Alex took the angle. This has never been spoke of.”

Issuing his first statement following the loss, Jamahal Hill offered no excuses for the loss.

“Oh well, that’s the game we play,” Hill said in a video on social media. “Got caught. For anybody that cares, I’m good. I’m well.”

Looking to jump right back into the fire, ‘Sweet Dreams’ called for a clash with former 205-pound champ Jiri Prochazka.

“I dared to be great against adversity and against a great challenge and came up short at the highest level in the world!!!” Hill later wrote on X. “I answered the call twice on short notice to fight for a championship that most will never fight for!!! On to the next, [Ji?í Procházka let’s] make it happen!!”

Competing in the featured prelim of UFC 300, Prochazka put away Aleksandar Rakic emphatically, re-establishing himself as one of the light heavyweight division’s top contenders.

Alex Pereira went into his first light heavyweight title defense with an injury.

Still, that didn’t stop ‘Poatan’ from adding another highlight-reel knockout to his resume, dispatching former champion Jamahal Hill in the opening round of their headliner with a booming left uppercut.

Immediately following the bout, Pereira appeared to be preoccupied with his foot, something that didn’t go unnoticed by play-by-play man Jon Anik. ‘Poatan’ later confirmed that he suffered a toe injury during fight camp and has since released footage of the incident on Instagram.

Dana White thought Alex Pereira’s toe injury happened in the fight

Shortly after UFC 300 concluded, Dana White spoke about Pereira’s injury, which he initially thought was sustained during the fight with Hill — not two weeks prior.

“You guys don’t know this yet but I’ll tell you. I just found out when I went up in the octagon because I saw [Pereira] messing around with his foot,” White said at the UFC 300 post-fight press conference. “He broke his toe two weeks ago. He fought tonight with a broken toe, I thought he broke his toe in the fight. His team was like, ‘No he broke his toe two weeks ago.’ He was like, ‘I ain’t losing this opportunity for a f*cing pinky toe.’”

Dana White and Alex Pereira

When it was Pereira’s turn to speak with media members, he confirmed White’s comment, revealing that he had broken his toe weeks out from UFC 300, but chose to push through rather than bowing out of the landmark main event.

“That happened in the last couple of weeks,” Pereira said. “It’s not something that I was going to pull out of the fight. I had to push through. It happened in the moment of my camp that I had to be slowing down my training, so I had to just push through.”

Alex Pereira

Clearly, the lingering injury didn’t prevent him from putting away yet another former UFC champion. Unfortunately, it will probably stop him from making a quick turnaround to fight Tom Aspinall at UFC 301 on May 4.

After a rather uneventful first three minutes in which the pair exchanged some shots, it seemed a grazing low blow that woke up ‘Poatan’. After referee Herb Dean began to break up the action, Pereira ushered him away to keep the action going. Then just seconds later, Pereira launched a left hook that sent Hill crashing to his back – some heavy ground-and-pound would quickly see the fight be called off

Pereira will look to continue to be an active champion, even calling to defend his 205lb title at UFC 301 on May 4. While this is unlikely, Pereira has proved to be at his best when fighting consistently.
