Jared Cannonier has certainly made no bones about his game plan for his UFC 271 showdown and potential title-eliminator with Derek Brunson – predicting a knockout win over the North Carolina veteran, whom he believes will enter the Octagon with the intent of wrestling early and often.

Cannonier, who returned to the winner’s enclosure back in August at UFC Vegas 34, managed to secure a unanimous decision win over former interim middleweight title challenger, Kelvin Gastelum. The win kept Cannonier alive and kicking in the middleweight title hunt, landing him at #3 following a prior loss to former division best, Robert Whittaker.

Jared Cannonier currently boasts a 4-1 record at middleweight since his division move

For Brunson, the top-10 mainstay has enjoyed a certain purple-patch recently, extending his winning spree to five straight victories with a September third round guillotine win over former welterweight title challenger, Darren Till. The win came as Brunson’s second of the year, following a dominant wrestling display en route to a unanimous judging success against Kevin Holland.

Originally expected to meet next weekend at UFC 270 on January 22. – the bout between Cannonier and Brunson has been elevated to UFC 271 on February 12. – beneath a middleweight title rematch between champion, Israel Adesanya, and the above mentioned, Whittaker.

With the victor likely to challenge for spoils in their next outing, Cannonier recently spoke with LowKick MMA reporter, James Lynch, where he provided his thoughts on how a matchup with Brunson could play out, from a stylistic point of view.

“I think, stylistically – we’ve all heard that old moniker, ‘striker vs. grappler’ thing,” Jared Cannonier said. “And it’s a prevalent aspect of this fight. Pretty much, his only means of victory is to impose his wrestling. Of course, he’s got that power, he’s got that long, lunging left hand that we’re all accustomed to seeing and stuff like that so. And he’s got that ground-and-pound as well.

“I think one thing leads to another and it’s always gonna lead to his wrestling,” Jared Cannonier continued. “And especially when he fights me, it’s gonna have to be, you know – that’s it. You’re gonna have to wrestle if you wanna win a fight with me, but that’s gonna be hard, that’s gonna be a hard mountain to climb. Especially with the fact that I know he’s gonna have to wrestle me. … We’re working on what he’s gonna bring to the table. I think the game plan we’re formulating is great. I feel like we’re already ahead of schedule as far as implementing the skills, the techniques, the ability to ‘do’. The outlook is bleak for Derek Brunson as far as I’m concerned.”

As far as a prediction for the fight, Cannonier explained how he wants to create the opportunity to land a right-hand shot early, resulting in a stoppage victory.

“I envision, the ref saying, ‘Go’, we walk up – maybe we shake hands, maybe we don’t, “Jared Cannonier said. “But I’m gonna create some sort of action, create some energy or momentum and put myself in the position to land my right hand. And he won’t be able to withstand it.”

UFC middleweight contender Jared Cannonier doesn’t believe that Derek Brunson’s hairstyle and perceived alter-ego will change how their fight goes down at UFC 271.

Cannonier faces Brunson in a potential No. 1 contender fight in the UFC 271 co-headliner. He is coming off an impressive win over Kelvin Gastelum last August and has won four of his last five fights in the division.

Many believe that Brunson’s five-fight winning streak has to do with his dyed blonde hair. The term ‘Blonde Brunson’ has been alluded to as an alter-ego and different form of Brunson who enters the octagon.

During an exclusive interview with LowKickMMA’s James Lynch, Cannonier said he isn’t phased by Brunson’s new image and career turnaround.

“It’s a gimmick, good for him,” Cannonier said. “He found a gimmick that will keep relevant for a little while longer. That s**t is irrelevant to me. That’s all antics, and that has f**k-all to do with me whopping [his] a**.”

Jared Cannonier Has Been Considered As The Dark Horse Of The Middleweight Division

Cannonier has been a target of middleweight champion Israel Adesanya over the past few years. Adesanya has spoken in multiple interviews about how he respects Cannonier and would gladly give him a shot at his middleweight title.

Brunson on the other hand is looking for a rematch against Adesanya, after falling to him at UFC 230. He’s been on fire since that loss, earning dominant wins over Darren Till, Kevin Holland, and Edmen Shahbazyan in the octagon.

All eyes will be on the middleweight division at UFC 271. The main event will feature Adesanya and Robert Whittaker in a title rematch years in the making, along with Cannonier and Brunson. The winners of these two fights will more than likely be in the next title bout in 2022.

UFC middleweight Jared Cannonier is confident he’ll become the first man to defeat “Blonde Brunson” when they collide at UFC 270.

The two top-five contenders are set to meet in an apparent title eliminator at the first pay-per-view of 2022. Having competed across three different weight classes in the UFC, a victory would likely lead to Cannonier’s first title shot on MMA’s biggest stage.

Since moving down to 185 pounds, “The Killa Gorilla” has gone 4-1. Three straight victories over David Branch, Anderson Silva, and Jack Hermansson established himself in the championship conversation. While a loss on the scorecards and a broken arm at the hands of former champ Robert Whittaker stalled his charge to the top, Cannonier revived his title aspirations with a main event win against perennial contender Kelvin Gastelum in August.

Brunson, meanwhile, has transcended from the status of divisional gatekeeper to contender with an impressive five-fight winning streak since a defeat to current champ Israel Adesanya. After decision triumphs over Elias Theodorou and Ian Heinisch, “Blonde Brunson” entered the scene and dominated Edmen Shahbazyan, Kevin Holland, and Darren Till. The veteran will be looking to secure a rematch with “The Last Stylebender” at Cannonier’s expense come January 22.

Despite his opponent’s hot form, Cannonier is confident he’ll impose his will and end Brunson’s unbeaten run as a blonde fighter when they enter the Octagon together. In an interview with The Schmo, the 37-year-old revealed his intention to adjust Brunson’s new moniker in a brutal way.

“Get ready. I’m about to bust open this UFC middleweight division wide open as soon as I turn blonde Brunson into blood Brunson, because I’m gonna bloody him up, I’mma batter him up. Ground beef Brunson, whatever the hell you wanna call him, I’mma beat this man up. Then I’m gonna move on to my title, and I plan on doing the same thing to each and every person after that.”

Cannonier: I’m A Terrible Matchup For Brunson

Despite mostly being known for his standup skills, which has helped him record nine knockouts in his 19-fight professional career, Cannonier believes he has the grappling pedigree to hang with the best in that regard.

For that reason, “The Killa Gorilla” believes his all-round abilities make him a terrible matchup for Brunson, who has often been criticized for his technique on the feet.

“I think it’s a perfect matchup for me. It’s a classic grappler vs. predominant striker in myself. But I can grapple with the best as well. And I feel that, you know, this is a perfect matchup for me, a terrible matchup for him. So yeah, I plan on going in there and making that happen.”

A victory for either man should see them book a meeting with either Adesanya or Whittaker for the second half of 2022. The reigning middleweight king is expected to defend his title against former champ “The Reaper” at the UFC 271 pay-per-view in February.

It looks like Derek Brunson aka “Blonde Brunson” is ready for his fight with Jared Cannonier.

Sitting at number four in the rankings, and riding a five-fight winning streak, Blonde Brunson is not far from a title shot, and rematch with Israel Adesanya. However, with news recently breaking that the UFC is hoping to book Adesanya in a rematch with Robert Whittaker, it seems clear that he will have to secure at least one more victory before he is considered to be the top contender at 185lb.

So in the meantime, Brunson will be turning his attention to a fight with the man ranked above him, Jared Cannonier, with the two slated to throw down at UFC 270, on January 22nd. Ahead of their important bout, Brunson took to his Twitter to poke a little fun at his upcoming opponent, roasting him over his previous physique, when he was fighting at heavyweight, before eventually losing weight and getting more shredded for his run at middleweight.

“I knew it , I knew it. Cannonier you ain’t slick, ol Nutty Professor lookin boy ???” Brunson wrote.

Obviously, this was all I good spirits, but this was an absolutely hilarious comparison for Brunson to make. With that said, the fight between these two will be all business, as each man looks to establish themselves as a worthy challenger for the title.

Brunson has looked nearly unstoppable since his 2018 loss to Adesanya, racking up impressive wins over the likes of Darren Till, Kevin Holland, and Edmen Shahbazyan. Conversely, Cannonier has won four of his last five, with his only setback being a close fight with former champ Robert Whittaker.

Derek Brunson and Jared Cannonier will be facing off at UFC 270, on January 22nd. It will be interesting to see how these two top middleweights square up when the time comes.

The middleweight title eliminator between Derek Brunson and Jared Cannonier has been moved to UFC 271 on February 12.

ESPN was the first to report the new date for the bout. The event is set to be headlined by Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker and is scheduled to take place in the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

In Brunson’s case, he is currently riding an impressive five-fight winning streak, including most recently finishing former UFC title challenger Darren Till in September. A middleweight match-up with title implications between Jared Cannonier and Derek Brunson will take place at UFC 270 on January 22 according to a report from MMA Junkie.

Brunson has won five straight fights since suffering a TKO loss to Israel Adesanya in 2018. Most recently, he put on a dominant display to take out Darren Till inside three rounds at UFC Vegas 36. Prior to that, he picked up big wins over Kevin Holland and Edmen Shahbazyan.

The 37-year-old took to social media to announce he’d signed a fight contract but stopped short of announcing who his opponent is.

“BIG FIGHT news . I got the fight I wanted . I sent that contract back in 30 secs,” Brunson wrote on Twitter.

Cannonier re-established himself as a player at 185lbs when he beat Kelvin Gastelum over five rounds in August. Prior to that, he suffered a three-round decision defeat to Robert Whittaker, who now seems set to an eagerly anticipated rematch with ‘Stylebender’ for UFC gold in the near future.

UFC 270 has not been officially announced yet and no other fights are set for the card. Dana White did previously suggest that he is hoping to book a middleweight title fight for January, which would indicate Adesanya vs. Whittaker II could headline the card that will also see a new 185lb number one contender announce themselves.
