There’s nothing worse than a terrible decision where the winner loses and the loser clearly wins.

Unfortunately for both fighters and fight fans, it’s more commonplace than you think.

The history of the UFC has produced some awful decisions. Let’s take a look at the 10 worst robberies in the UFC, updated for 2018:

10. Sam Alvey Defeats Gian Villante – UFC Fight Night 131

As for more recent robberies, this one certainly stands out. When ‘Smilin’ Sam Alvey called out Gian Villante following Alvey’s victory in his light heavyweight debut, fight fans oddly took notice.

Sure, they weren’t the biggest names in the division, but both men are known scrappers with some thrilling knockout victories to their name.

Which is why the fight itself felt massively deflating watching it play out. Alvey resorted to the kind of extreme bouts of inactivity he’s been known for when he can’t score the knockout. Alvey did manage to knock his opponent down towards the end of the first round, but there wasn’t enough time left to finish him.

Meanwhile, Villante did his best to cut off the cage and corner Alvey. The Long Island native showed excellent Octagon control and was winning the fight beyond the flash knockdown at the end of round one.

So it wasn’t too surprising to see the crowd react the way they did once the split decision was announced in Alvey’s favor. That one knockdown apparently negated the other 14 minutes and 45 seconds where Villante controlled the fight.

An obviously disappointed and stunned Villante left the arena scratching his head at how he could have lost that fight, and fight fans were left just as confused.

Sometimes, a single knockdown can win over the judges, even more so than the remaining 15 minutes of the fight.

Makwan Amirkhani and Jason Knight went to war in Liverpool and Amirkhani reigned supreme.

Knight didn’t hesitate to fire off kicks early. Amirkhani landed a right hand. He went for a knee, but ended up getting top control momentarily. Amirkhani stuck his tongue out and taunted Knight before standing back up. A big hook saw Knight’s nose trickle blood. Amirkhani kept finding the chin of Knight. Blood continued to pour from the nose of Knight. A cut formed near the eyebrow of Knight. Knight dropped Amirkhani with a clean uppercut. Amirkhani recovered and landed a right. Knight dropped his opponent again with a right hand. Amirkhani was on top, but Knight went for an omoplata. He locked on a triangle near the end of the round, but Amirkhani got out of it.

Round two was underway and Knight fired off some trash talk after turning the tables. Amirkhani went for a flying knee. After trading shots, Amirkhani took his opponent down. The lead hand was there for Knight. A right hook landed for Amirkhani and he scored a trip takedown. Amirkhani maintained control until the horn sounded.

He moved to the north-south position. Amirkhani landed a couple of shots near the end of the fight.

When the score totals were read, two of the three judges scored the fight 29-28 for Amirkhani. The other judge somehow saw the fight 30-27 for Knight, but regardless Amirkhani won the bout.

Final Result: Makwan Amirkhani def. Jason Knight via split decision (27-30, 29-28, 29-28)

UFC Fresno had a bit of a Mike Tyson moment when Jason Knight bit Gabriel Benítez’ finger during their featherweight clash last Saturday.

Knight as ultimately deducted a point for his indiscretion, and Benítez gave his thoughts on the bite days later.

“I think it was a moment of desperation. I heard when his corner yelled, ‘defend the guillotine, defend the guillotine,’ and in that moment I had him in the guillotine, and I think he felt the pressure. When I grabbed the chin, he slid his chin to his chest, opened his mouth, and in that moment he bit me.”

“All of the sudden, I just felt the bite, and it happened twice. The first one, I stopped for a second and thought, ‘no, it can’t be,’ and the second one, that’s when I yelled because it hurt a lot. My finger is actually a bit swollen, but nothing major happened. He was wearing a mouthpiece but that protected the top teeth, not the bottom, so I did feel the teeth but it didn’t open (cut) me or anything, it was just the pressure of the bite which hurt a lot.”

Knight ended up losing the fight anyway in a bout that saw Benítez dominate from start to finish. “Hick Diaz” carried a good deal of hype leading into the fight, and had proved to be a colorful character during interviews with the media.

While many fighters could have been psychologically and physically shaken by being bit, Benítez persevered and took a decision victory. Two judges even scored the bout 30-26 in Benítez favor.

He revealed despite the distraction of the bite, he didn’t want to let it alter his game on the way to his highest-caliber win:

“In that moment, I didn’t want to get distracted by anything,” Benitez said. “I just simply let it be because I didn’t want to get distracted. I didn’t feel any anger, I just almost didn’t believe it like at that moment. I was like, ‘This is not true, he didn’t bite me,’ so I was just incredulous. But nothing major happened and I was able to continue.

“I just simply stuck to my strategy. I didn’t want to go to the ground with him, I felt superior on the feet, so I just stuck to my plan. If I went to the ground, I was just going to stand back up and keep hitting him on the feet. Even my coach Javier Mendez told me, ‘Don’t worry, you can keep attempting it (guillotine choke), but we’re going to stick to the strategy,’ and that’s what I did.”
