Mayhem Miller and Michael BispingDENVER — Michael Bisping and Jason “Mayhem” Miller make for an unlikely movie date, but in some bizarre way the pairing works. The two showed up at the Paramount Theater on Wednesday night for a private screening of The Ultimate Fighter season 14 premiere looking less like rivals and more like…well, not friends exactly, but also not quite enemies.

“He’s not a bad guy. He’s alright,” Bisping admitted, nodding over at Miller who was, at the very moment, practically shouting into a video camera a few feet away. “But trust me, that in your face for six weeks? You’re going to kill the guy.”

Now that filming is over and Bisping can get back to dealing with Miller “in small doses,” the two seem to get along just fine. Or at least, that’s how it seemed as they sat down together with a handful of media members to watch the first episode of the Spike TV reality show inside the 80-year-old art deco theater.

The show’s first episode didn’t give the coaches all that much to do, however. After a brief introduction, complete with highlight reels, they spent the bulk of the episode separated by UFC president Dana White, watching TUF hopefuls scrap for a spot on the show inside the empty Mandalay Bay Events Center. Not that there weren’t a few barbs here and there, of course.

When Bisping appeared on screen, describing Miller’s current bleached blonde look as a cross between “Josh Koscheck and a toilet brush,” even Miller reared his head back and laughed along with the rest of us.

And all night long, both on screen and in person, the one thing they agreed on was a mutual respect for the talent level of the fighters in this season of the show. Miller estimated that at least eight of the competitors were worthy of UFC contracts, regardless of how they fared during the reality show tournament.

But while seeking refuge in the lobby during the final half-hour of the show, Miller hinted that some days had been tougher than others when working alongside his British counterpart.

“I wanted to hit him,” he said. “I’d be like, today I’m going to hit him.”

What stopped him, he explained, was that he worried it would make him look like a jerk once the show aired. “And then my mom would get mad,” he added.

The six weeks of filming in Las Vegas and the ensuing media tour to hype the show have ensured that Miller and Bisping hardly go a day without talking about one another. For a fight that’s still more than two months away, that’s an uncommon amount of preamble, even in the UFC.

In fact, Miller said, it’s taken almost every bit of patience he has to keep from freaking out with so much time to think about the fight. In his younger days, he said, this is exactly the kind of thing that might have sent him looking for trouble at a local bar.

“Or I’d start an argument with my girlfriend, just for the drama,” he said.

These days, as he jets from southern California to New York for talk shows, then to a private screening in Denver, more often than not it’s Bisping who is his date. And as they bickered about practical jokes and busted one another’s chops on stage following the show’s premiere, they seemed not unlike an old married couple — though maybe one that’s headed for divorce.

“During the show, I wanted to kill him,” Bisping said. “I’m going to kill him.”

Miller just rolled his eyes, flashing the same unimpressed expression we’d seen just moments before on the giant screen behind him.

“Save your breath for cooling your pies,” he said.

“Whatever that means,” Bisping shot back.

As with any couple, few battles are as fierce as the fight for the last word.

The last season of The Ultimate Fighter to air on Spike begins next Wednesday. At least it is likely to leave with a bang. What other way could a show starring Jason “Mayhem” Miller and Michael Bisping leave?

The two are among the most heavily quoted MMA fighters over the last half-decade, Miller for his biting one-liners and Bisping for his blunt honesty. Both reared their heads on Wednesday, when they shared a teleconference to publicize TUF’s Sept. 21 premiere.

Between praise for the season’s cast and discussion about their upcoming fight, Miller and Bisping couldn’t resist engaging in some verbal sparring.

Their most memorable exchange surprisingly came after a rare compliment. Miller had just finished crediting the UFC for the decision to install them on as rival coaches, saying it was bound to make for a memorable season and lead to personality clashes.

As if on cue, Bisping seized the moment.

“You’re trying to sweeten me up so I don’t beat you too badly on Dec. 3,” he said.

“Don’t get me wrong, I think you’re way worse an idiot than I am,” Miller said. “And I’m going to smash your face and choke you.”

“Nice to see you’ve been warming up on your sister,” Bisping shot back. “I definitely will be practicing guillotine escapes.”

“You make sure to practice them,” Miller said with a laugh. “Actually, I’ll send you her number.”

That Bisping would bring up a now-infamous August incident involving Miller and his sister would not otherwise be surprising, but the timing of it in this particular case was a bit curious.

Literally less than two minutes earlier, Bisping had been comparing his feelings of Miller to those of Jorge Rivera, saying the latter situation was worse because Rivera had “crossed the line talking about family stuff.”

“Jason is not like that, he’s just a bit idiotic,” Miller said.

Bisping said that the two had hung around each other on a few occasions in the past and that he “thought he was an OK guy,” but that his view completely changed within a short time of arriving in Las Vegas. Bisping said Miller “crossed the line” during the season but wouldn’t offer any details. Miller said the feeling was mutual.

“My initial belief was to give Mike the benefit of doubt, but he fully proved himself to be a p—- by week 2,” he said.

Still, the fighters begrudgingly admitted that they shared some common ground when it came to the opportunity placed in front of them. While Bisping said it frustrated him to be taken out of action for an extended period to tape the series, he acknowledged it is something of a reward to be chosen for the coaching roles.

Miller, though well known due to his Bully Beatdown show, isn’t quite as well known for his fighting exploits, even though he’s been around for a decade and competed in several major promotions. For that, Bisping needled Miller.

“It’s a big opportunity for Jason,” he said. “He went from fighting on the undercard to fighting in the main event against me.”

Miller said he was grateful for the opportunity but added, “I cannot do anything other than beat Mike up, so I apologize.”

After thanking Bisping again, the Brit responded, “That’s quite alright, I’ll be sending you on your way back to the undercards real soon.”

And so it went.

The two will have at least three months to let their distaste for each other simmer into a boil. But at least to Bisping, the fight has already been decided.

“Between you, me and everyone else on the line, Jason’s already admitted that I’m pretty much going to beat him. He said I had better standup, he said I have better cardio. He knows I’m bigger and stronger. These are things he’s already admitted to me, so he’s already beaten mentally. Dec. 3 is just a formality of showing up and collecting my paycheck.”

Michael Bisping Reminds Us Chael Sonnen is a Cheater Who Took Steroids

TUF 14 coach, Michael Bisping appeared on Ariel Helwani‘s The MMA Hour and may have said something relevant about Chael Sonnen, who claims he will regain a Middleweight title-shot should he defeat Brian Stann at UFC 136 this October 8th. In regard to that next-in-line shot, Bisping told Helwani, “I think it’s complete bulls**t. Chael Sonnen, who just fought the champ, cheated and took steroids.” Bisping went on to say, “I think I am next in line. Ideal scenario would be beat Miller, get a title shot, win the world title.”

Now Bisping also has clear perspective understanding that, a win over Jason Miller isn’t exactly title-shot worthy. Meanwhile, Anderson Silva has a shoulder injury, which is expected to leave him out of the Octagon until sometime in 2012. Perhaps the UFC gods will plan to pit the winner of Sonnen vs. Stann against the Bisping vs. Miller winner and determine the next contender from there. Michael Bisping will face Jason “Mayhem” Miller this December 3rd after TUF 14 airs this fall.

The outspoken Sonnen has yet to tweet a response but expect something borderline logical and debatably amusing to come: here.

‘Mayhem’ Miller: Arrest for Assaulting Sister ‘Now All Over With’

Filed under:

UFC middleweight Jason “Mayhem” Miller said on Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour that his arrest for allegedly assaulting his sister in August is now “all over with,” but added that “[i]t wasn’t alleged; there was an actual altercation.”

Miller was arrested by the Chatham County Sheriff in North Carolina on August 7 for simple assault and false imprisonment after an incident during which he was said to have put his sister in a headlock and refused to let her leave a house party that both siblings were attending.

“I’ll just say this: my sister was not in any state to drive, and I stopped her from driving,” Miller told Ariel Helwani. “However, she was in a state to file a police report, which is now all over with. It’s all finished. It was unfounded…a Miller family experience that got out of hand.”

When pressed on whether it was truly necessary for the professional fighter to put his sister into a headlock to prevent her from driving, Miller insisted that it was.

“Look, my sister is a big girl,” he said. “She’s like 200 pounds and strong, muscle girl. I had to hold her, like, for real hold her. There’s no wrist-controlling your big sister, you know what I’m saying? You’ve got to like, hold on to her.”

Miller was arrested the day after the incident at the party, after his sister notified the Chatham County Sheriff’s office. Originally, there was concern that the 30-year-old Miller, who will appear as a coach opposite British middleweight Michael Bisping on the upcoming season of the UFC reality show The Ultimate Fighter, might have his fighting career put on hold due to legal issues.

But there was nothing to the complaint, Miller said, and he expects no further legal action on the matter, though he is “glad I did that” in order to stop his sister from driving that night, he added.

“If I had to do it all over again, I would do exactly the same thing,” Miller said.

What surprised him the most, Miller said, was how big the story became after TMZ initially reported his arrest.

“It’s funny, because I’m in the stage of my career where people care about some petty redneck drama that I got into. It’s really surreal. I had TMZ beating down my door and trying to call me about that. I was like, are you serious? I didn’t even think that was a big deal.”

Now that the matter has been settled, he can get back to focusing on the upcoming fight against his coaching counterpart on the TUF 14 Finale.

“All I’m thinking about is fighting Michael Bisping on December 3,” he said. “…That’s all I can think about.”

Michael Bisping: Mayhem Miller’s Mouth Is Bigger Than His Brain

Michael BispingMichael Bisping coached against Jason “Mayhem” Miller on the season of The Ultimate Fighter that was filmed this summer and will air on Spike TV this fall, and for fans of the show who enjoy seeing conflict between the coaches, Bisping has some good news: There was friction during filming between the two of them.

Bisping said on The MMA Hour that he and Miller had several encounters during the taping of the show, and he came away from them with less respect for Miller than he had before.

“Miller’s mouth is bigger than his brain,” Bisping said. “I definitely get the upper hand throughout the entire season. I’m not talking about the fights, I’m just talking about the one-on-one interaction with Miller.”

Bisping said he had hoped to coach against Chael Sonnen because he thought beating Sonnen at the end of the Ultimate Fighter season would earn him a shot at middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Instead, Sonnen failed to get licensed to fight after legal problems related to his use of testosterone and his conviction on money laundering charges, and so Miller was next up.

“I was a little disappointed it wasn’t Chael Sonnen,” Bisping said. “I think a lot of fans wanted to see that. But he had his personal problems and it wasn’t meant to be. Miller, I wasn’t as excited.”

But once he got to know Miller, Bisping said, he became excited about the possibility of fighting him.

“At the start of the season I thought he was an OK guy,” Bisping said of Miller. “By the end of the season I wanted to kill him. Fortunately, December 3 I’ll have my opportunity.”

Bisping said his biggest disappointment is that if he does beat Miller, he doesn’t think that will be enough to earn him a title shot, whereas beating Sonnen probably would have. And Bisping said he doesn’t think it’s fair that Sonnen is considered close to title contention, even though Sonnen lost to Silva and then was suspended by the California State Athletic Commission.

“I think it’s complete bulls**t,” Bisping said. “Chael Sonnen, who just fought the champ, cheated and took steroids.”

Although Bisping is preparing mostly for Miller right now, he makes clear that his ultimate goal is to earn a shot at Silva.

“I think I am next in line,” Bisping said. “Ideal scenario would be beat Miller, get a title shot, win the world title.”
