Nurmagomedov To Retire?

American Kickboxing Academy head coach Javier Mendez is not sure what Khabib Nurmagomedov will do next — but will support any decision he makes.

Nurmagomedov is expected to face Justin Gaethje in a lightweight title unification fight reportedly set to take place in September.

However, many are questioning whether he will fight at all, let alone Gaethje, following the death of his father last week. “The Eagle” is yet to make a public statement and as far as Mendez is concerned, he has no idea what Nurmagomedov will do next.

But whether it’s keeping on fighting or retiring, he will support the champion’s decision.

“I’m not in that poor kid’s head, and all I can say is whatever he wants to do, I’m going to be behind him,” Mendez said on The Luke Thomas Show. “He needs support from me in any capacity that I can give it. So if he wants to fight ,I’m with him, if he doesn’t, I’m with him. If he wants to retire I’m with him, if he doesn’t, I’m with him.

“To me, I’m going to support whatever decision he needs to make, so long as it’s a right decision for him. If I don’t feel it’s the right decision, I would speak out about it, but for right now, it’s hard to speculate if what have, could have. I haven’t spoken to him. I think he needs time to grieve and then get a sense of what his purpose is and what he wants to do after that.”

Do you think Nurmagomedov will keep fighting?

McGregor, Khabib Nurmagomedov

Conor McGregor is Khabib Nurmagomedov’s toughest opponent. At least according to the latter’s head coach Javier Mendez.

Nurmagomedov defeated McGregor with relative ease when they met in their UFC 229 lightweight title headliner back in October 2018. Although there certainly is a demand for a rematch given how heated things are between the pair, some observers feel the result will be a foregone conclusion once again and would prefer to see “The Eagle” face other dangerous foes such as Tony Ferguson or Justin Gaethje.

However, Mendez believes McGregor is still the biggest threat for Nurmagomedov — even more so than Ferguson — and owes it to his striking ability.

“No I’m sorry, I think it’s still Conor,” Mendez said on The Luke Thomas Show (via BJ Penn). “Even though people may disagree me, but I just know how good Conor is. Conor’s the toughest fight to date.

“He’s [Ferguson] got way better cardio but Conor was dangerous, any time you let Conor release any type of striking he could just put you out. That’s why he was so dangerous to me. If you let Conor get in his groove, he would have done some amazing damage if we allowed him to. Of course, that wasn’t going to happen, but I still fear him, I really do.”

McGregor will likely have to wait some time before he gets his desired rematch with Nurmagomedov, especially with the interim lightweight title fight between Ferguson and Gaethje taking place this weekend at UFC 249.

However, the Irishman will certainly agree with Mendez’s assessment.

Khabib Nurmagomedov’s coach Javier Mendez responded to critics claiming the lightweight champion decided to sit out UFC 249.

Nurmagomedov received plenty of criticism and accusations of “ducking” Tony Ferguson after he had to pull out of their scheduled title fight after getting stuck in Russia due to a cross-border travel ban amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Eagle” was originally traveling to Abu Dhabi from the United States as that’s where he claims to have been told the fight would happen. But when the borders were closed on his arrival, he returned home to Russia which would later enforce the cross-border travel ban ruling him out.

In the end, it was the right move as UFC 249 — set to take place on tribal land in California on April 18 — was eventually canceled. Regardless, Mendez decided to speak on the matter:

“He didn’t choose to sit it out,” Mendez said during a fan Q&A on YouTube (via MMA Fighting). “He just went back home and he was waiting and training and waiting for a location. So he didn’t choose to sit out anything. They couldn’t give him a location and then he couldn’t get permission. He wasn’t gonna be able to get permission, so he didn’t really sit anything out. He didn’t get permission and he didn’t get the location and now we know why he didn’t get the location because of fear of it leaking out. Because it leaked out, now look, there is no show.

“He did absolutely the right thing when he was told to go to Abu Dhabi because the show more likely was going to be there, and then he would go home from there if that didn’t work out, but that was the plan, and then train at home and then see what happens.”

For now, all we can do is wait for the world to return to normal and then rebook Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson. The Dagestan native previously hinted at returning in August, but as per his latest post, September also seems to be an option.

Those are the two options that make sense according to Mendez:

“We may see him in August or we may see him in September,” Mendez added. “If it’s August, I believe it’s San Francisco. If it’s September, I believe it’s Abu Dhabi in United Arab Emirates. So yeah, that’s when we’ll see it. One of those.”
