Chael Sonnen is the undisputed king of trash-talking in the world of combat sports.

There is a regular running joke in the MMA community that Chael Sonnen is “still undefeated.” In reality, ‘The American Gangster’ has fallen short on multiple occasions inside the cage, but when it comes to the art of disparaging his opponents in a humorous way, Sonnen is the best in the business. Perhaps no better example of this came during a media event ahead of Bellator 170 in 2017 before Sonnen was scheduled to square off with former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz.

Addressing the media, Tito Ortiz openly accused Chael Sonnen of talking his way into big money fights. ‘The American Gangster’ didn’t miss a beat, delivering a response so savage that it generated an audible groan from media members in attendance.

“Tito always says I’m using my mouth to get my opportunities,” Sonnen said. “The only person I know that made money using their mouth is his ex-wife.”

Chael Sonnen Never Apologized For the Comment Despite Tito Ortiz’s Demand

The ex that Chael Sonnen was referring to is famous adult film star, Jenna Jameson. Ortiz and Jameson had a lengthy, although embattled relationship that resulted in the birth of twin boys in 2009. During an appearance on The Media Mogul, Sonnen recalled the moment and shared his thoughts on Ortiz’s immediate response to the zinger.

“Tito impregnated her, but he never actually married her,” Sonnen said. “He corrected the statement. He wanted that known. ‘We have kids together, but I never married her. We lived in sin goddammit. I did not marry her.’ I’m sure he tried to get alimony from her. It didn’t work out. He found out he wasn’t actually married.”

Tito Ortiz earned a first-round submission over Chael Sonnen at the Bellator event. Always gracious in defeat, Sonnen offered his congratulations to Ortiz in the locker room, but apparently, that wasn’t enough. Ortiz demanded that Sonnen apologize for his comment while once again addressing the press.

“I never apologized. I figured that people would get it. In fact, Tito’s another one. After our fight, I congratulated him. ‘Good job’ and it was our second time meeting. I had beat him in college now he beat me here. It was this terribly embarrassing thing because he really is a very bad fighter so to lose to Tito is very embarrassing. You don’t want to be the guy that lost to Tito.

“But I congratulate him. I was cordial. I saw him in the back afterward, our locker was right by each other and I told him and he told me, ‘If you want me to accept that apology, you will do it publicly at the press conference.’ And I was just standing there like, ‘I am humiliated right now. I am not getting a bonus check. I lost to you and suck.’ I’m standing there looking at him and I’m just nodding. I’m dumbfounded. I’ve known him for 21 years. He’ll accept, but I have to do it publicly.

“We get to the press conference and the whole thing’s over. Scott Coker tells everybody ‘Thank you for coming’ and Tito stops him. ‘Hold on. Chael, do you have something you would like to say?’ He actually wanted this apology. I just thought for a winner to do that to the loser after the fact, it’s a very underhanded thing and I said no. I never gave him the apology. It’s been a really weird thing to do. Tito and I have been weird ever since.”

In this article, we’ll look at 10 occasions where the MMA and **** industries became intertwined, from the soft-core magazine shoots and hardcore movies through to the failed relationships and sex scandals.

War Machine

Ex-UFC fighter Jon “War Machine” Koppenhaver’s involvement in the **** industry would lead to his already controversial, unstable lifestyle spiraling even further out of control.

War Machine announced his intention to become a **** actor in 2009, signing with the L.A. Direct Models agency, and was soon featuring in his first movie with pornstar Riley Steele. He’d go on to feature in 12 films while simultaneously continuing his MMA career.

War Machine’s volatility would lead to his time in the industry being cut short, however, with a 2009 brawl at a party held in an L.A. club by pornstar Brooke Haven being a particular flashpoint.

The fighter was dating another pornstar at the time and reportedly slapped her in the face after seeing her talking to another man at the party before going on a rampage, striking multiple other people including **** actor Alec Knight, who was KO’d by a single punch.

In 2013, War Machine met famous **** star Christy Mack at a photoshoot for Hustler magazine and the two soon began dating.

Mack claimed to have quickly fallen in love with him, but only 4-5 months into their relationship she later stated that he became violent towards her.

They broke up and got back together several times the months that followed, but were separated in August 2014 when War Machine let himself into her home, only to find her and bed with another man, Corey Thomas.

War Machine flew into a rage, punching, biting, and choking Thomas before ordering him to leave.

He then set upon his ex-girlfriend, punching and kicking Mack repeatedly and attempting to rape her. The horrifying attack left Mack with 18 broken bones including a broken nose and ribs, missing teeth and a ruptured liver.

Despite her injuries, Mack was able to flee the scene, fearing for her life after War Machine went looking for a knife.

After a manhunt, War Machine was arrested and ultimately found guilty of 29 charges, including multiple sexual assault charges, leading to a sentence of life in prison with no opportunity for parole until he has served 36 years behind bars.

Tito Ortiz Wants a Public Apology From Chael Sonnen

Tito Ortiz is not quite done with Chael Sonnen, following Saturday’s first round victory over his opponent on Bellator 170 on Saturday Night.

Ortiz had to be prized off of Sonnen by referee Big John McCarthy, which confirmed to many that the negative feeling towards his opponent, and thrash talking was in fact genuine. The Californian was quite clear in stating that he did hold “ill will” towards his fellow, ex-UFC legend, and it appears that submitting him in the first round of their head-to-head has not done anything to increase diplomatic relations between the two.

Ortiz confirmed (via Fight Hub TV) that this will not change, unless Sonnen publicly apologizes:

“I didn’t say anything after the fight; he came to my dressing room and said, ‘Good fight, it was an honor, da da da’ and I go: ‘You’ve got to apologize to me in public.’ So we’re gonna see if he has enough balls to apologize to me in public.”

Sonnen, and expert in trash talking  targeted Tito Ortiz’s personal life, including somewhat close-to-the bone comments regarding ex girlfriend Jenna Jameson, and the financial situation of “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy”. Ortiz felt that Sonnen had crossed the line, and got what he deserved for his ‘lack of class’.

“I’m a kid who has a lot of respect. I believe in respect. Talking about another person’s family is something wrong to do and for what he did, that’s just the wrong thing to do. That’s always my three rules of s**t-talking: You don’t talk about a person’s family, you don’t talk about a person’s country, and you don’t lie about a person. He did all three of those things, and the big man upstairs took care of it.”

Ortiz is looking towards pastures new, and appeared genuinely happy in finishing his career on a high:

“I want to go out as my best, no matter what anyone says. I don’t want to go away when people say, ‘Well, he should have left a long time ago.’ I want people to go, ‘He should stay here, he should still stay around.’ But I’m gonna be 42 on Monday. I’ve been in this business for 20 years. I’ve done everything I wanted to do. I’ve became a millionaire, I bought my dream home, I bought my dream car, I bought my dream boat, I’ve been able to give my kids their college tuition, all three of my boys, so I’ve done what I needed to do as a parent, as a man on this Earth and what’s the next thing for me to do is find a different career.”

Sonnen is preparing to meet Ortiz in what has been billed as the farewell fight for “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy“, and made sure that Ortiz, 41, needs no motivation in ending his final foray in MMA with a bang.

“Tito, go ahead. Tell ’em what I do so well” said Sonnen.
