At first, Cody Garbrandt was all smiles when he managed to make weight for his big bantamweight title fight tomorrow night (Dec. 30) against champion Dominick Cruz. Things turned sour quickly when a commotion was heard in the backstage area.

That commotion ended up being an altercation between “No Love” and Cruz’s training partner Jeremy Stephens. Stephens is a seasoned mixed martial arts (MMA) veteran who currently competes in the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s (UFC) featherweight division.

MMAFighting reached out to both men for comments. The fighters responded and you can see what Stephens had to say below:

“So I turn my back and I take a couple steps and then I hear someone say, ‘Yeah, you better keep walking. You and your whole team blah blah blah.’ I look over, and it’s Cody approaching me. He’s coming at me fast, like he’s going to push me. I just put my arm out, and the security guy picks me up, moves me out. Cody starts getting all hot-headed, screaming, trying to throw his shirt off, trying to fight me. I’m laughing. Like, ‘Hey bro, you better get serious, you’re fighting my teammate tomorrow.’ I’m here for Dom. Then they broke it up.”

Garbrandt gave his side of the story and he didn’t mince words.

“Dude’s a b*tch and scratched my neck with his b*tch nails. He is lucky I had my hands full and was taken from behind by a few people. Cruz knows he can’t beat me so he brings his self-proclaimed savage in and hype man.”

The feud between Team Alpha Male and Cruz has spilled into something far more personal with Garbrandt involved. “No Love” threatened to walk into “The Dominator’s” interview room after the champion told the challenger he need to “shut his girlfriend” up when talking about the fight business.

Weigh-In Confrontation: Garbrandt Says Stephens Scratched Him With His ‘B*tch Nails’

Building on a day already full of drama and intrigue due to Ronda Rousey’s brief yet powerful appearance at the UFC 207 early weigh-ins followed by Johny Hendricks missing weight yet again, a backstage altercation between bantamweight title challenger Cody Garbrandt and his opponent Dominick Cruz’ teammate Jeremy Stephens was added to the growing list of headlines from the UFC’s year-ending pay-per-view (PPV) card.

The dust-up reportedly happened after the two fighters had weighed in and were walking out of the venue. Calling the action live, MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani described the scene towards the end of the following weigh-in video:

After it went down, Helwani caught up with Stephens to hear his side of the tale, confirming it did get physical:

“He’s coming at me fast, like he’s going to push me. I just put my arm out and the security guy picks me up, moves me out. Cody starts getting all hot-headed, screaming, trying to throw his shirt off, trying to fight me. I’m laughing. Like, Hey bro, you better get serious, you’re fighting my teammate tomorrow. I’m here for Dom. Then they broke it up. I was just shocked by the whole situation. This dude has got a fight coming up and he’s mad at me. I thought me and him were cordial. I got no problems with him. I’m here to support my teammate.

“I stiff-armed him. We both kinda grabbed each other.”

Garbrandt then texted his side to Helwani, riding Conor McGregor’s coattails with his infamous press conference line he levied at ‘Lil’ Heathen’:

“Dude’s a b*tch and scratched my neck with his b*tch nails. He is lucky I had my hands full and was taken from behind by a few people. Cruz knows he can’t beat me so he brings his self-proclaimed savage in and hype man.

“Like Conor (McGregor) said, who the fook is that guy?”

‘No Love’ certainly has just that for Cruz, and seems the sentiment now extends to the longtime champ’s team as well. But after Garbrandt went off the handles in an interview yesterday, it’s also safe to wonder if the Team Alpha Male knockout artist is getting a bit too heated for his own good.

It hasn’t failed him yet, however. Will it tomorrow night?

Following his unanimous decision loss to Frankie Edgar at UFC 205 in New York City, Jeremy Stephens (25-13) sent out an open challenge to anyone in the Ultimate Fighting Championnship’s (UFC) featherweight division. One fighter in particular that had “Lil’ Heathen’s” interest was UFC Hall of Famer B.J. Penn. Instead, “The Prodigy” was booked against Yair Rodriguez as the UFC Phoenix headliner.

Now, Stephens has his sights set on another 145-pound fan favorite. For years, Clay Guida (32-17) has entertained fans with his frenetic pace inside the Octagon. Stephens took to Twitter to call out “The Carpenter.”

In his last six bouts, Stephens has gone 2-4. The losses have come at the hands of Cub Swanson, Charles Oliveira, Max Holloway, and Frankie Edgar. In that rough stretch, he was able to defeat former bantamweight champion Renan Barao.

Guida has also gone 2-4 in his last six outings. He had success against Tatsuya Kawajiri and Robbie Peralta, but was finished in all of his losses during the stretch. He was knocked out by Chad Mendes and Brian Ortega. Dennis Bermudez and Thiago Tavares submitted him with chokes.

If you look at the statistics, it’s easy to tell these two are no strangers to the Octagon. Guida is 12-11 inside the Octagon, while Stephens is 12-12. Combined they have 47 fights in the UFC alone.

We previewed the main card earlier this week (RIP Cowboy Cerrone vs. Kelvin Gastelum), so check that out if you missed it. The “prelims” put that name to shame, as just about every fight on this slate could headline a Fox Sports 1 card.

Frankie Edgar will look to rebound from his one-sided loss to interim champion Jose Aldo at UFC 200 when he takes on the brick-fisted Jeremy Stephens. Edgar is one of the fighters who has been penciled in for this card since the idea of doing a card at Madison Square Garden was but a distant dream. The Toms River, NJ, native figures to get a big pop when he makes his walk to the Octagon.

Not even making the headliner of the prelims, Khabib Nurmagomedov will attempt to push his record to an unbelievable 24-0 against the talented but enigmatic Michael Johnson. The rest of the slate sees the return of Thiago Alves, a slugfest between bruising and defensively deficient middleweights Rafael Natal and Tim Boetsch, and what is sure to be a wildly fun welterweight banger between Vicente Luque and Belal Muhammad.

Read on for analysis and picks of the preliminary portion of UFC 205.
