Jiri Prochazka recalls being lost in the freezing Las Vegas mountains for 18 hours: 'I had frostbite'

Jiri Prochazka is known for locking himself in a pitch-black room for days at a time.

However, the former UFC light heavyweight champion nearly ran into disaster when he decided to go hiking through the immense darkness of the Las Vegas mountains in the dead of winter.

Jiri Prochazka

“I wanted to go to the Las Vegas Mountains, and I found some some top edge like Mount Charleston,” Prochazka told AllStar Sport. “So … I went there, and then I realized, I need some more better shoes, better jacket. So I went back, I bought all these things like ski shoes and a leather jacket, the Garmin watch, all these things.

“But what was wrong was that I didn’t watch the map well, because the map showed me it’s just [a hike] for a few hours, like maybe six hours. After six hours of walking high altitude, then I realized that I have to come back, or I need to hurry to the end. So I just decided to make it.

“It took me more than 16, 18 hours. And I forgot to take the light with me, because I thought it will be just for six hours. Then I got lost on this mountain.”

Fortunately, Prochazka made it back to his vehicle and returned home, but later discovered that his lengthy excursion came with an unfortunate consequence.

“I went back [home], and next day, I realized that my toe on my left leg is a little bit black,” he said. “So I had frostbite, and right now, I feel it’s completely healed, but it took my nails [falling out], and it took six months to [grow] a full new nail and to feel better balance in the leg.”

After coming up short against Alex Pereira in November, Jiri Prochazka returns to the Octagon on April 13 as part of the loaded UFC 300 card in Las Vegas. Hoping to get back into the title picture at 205, ‘Denis’ meets division standout Aleksandar Rakic.

Former undisputed light heavyweight champion, Jiri Prochazka has hit out at incoming foe, Aleksandar Rakic ahead of their UFC 300 clash next month – with the Czech Republic native urging his fellow European to keep his thoughts to himself when it comes to his thoughts on the samurai and bushido code.

Prochazka, the current number two ranked light heavyweight contender, has been sidelined since he headlined UFC 295 back in November at Madison Square Garden.

Featuring for the first time since he won undisputed gold in a stunning fifth round submission over Glover Teixeira, Prochazka was stopped with a heavy second round knockout loss to Alex Pereira in the pair’s vacant title affair.

And booked to make his return at UFC 300 next month in Las Vegas, former Rizin FF champion, Prochazka takes on fellow European talent, Rakic in a potential title-eliminator.

Reacting to Rakic’s plans to exploit apparent “holds” in his own game, fan-favorite contender, Prochazka urged the Austrian contender to save his words and execute his intentions inside the Octagon inside.

“He’s (Aleksandar Rakic) a Serbian guy living in Austria,” Jiri Prochazka told The AllStar during a recent interview. “I don’t know him personally, so I don’t like to talk about him when you don’t know someone personally, you don’t know, you really don’t know. Every time I’m surprised when he’s talking about me [and] who I am. I’m not a samurai and all these things so, man, shut up. You know nothing about me, we will talk in the cage.”

“I never said I was [a] samurai,” Jiri Prochazka explained. “I’m just all the time speaking about bushido code and all these ideas from [the] samurai world and how it helped me to be the person as who I am and to live in this world and for me to have rules. I like the samurai attitude, to the fight but to the living to live a full life – life to the fullest. The samurai attitude is not – I’m using all these ideas and principles for fighting, for conflict situations for all these things and it’s not like I found that, it was already in me.”

And returning in a high-profile main event fight against Alex Pereira at UFC 300 next month, Hill has been backed to pose a significant threat to the former’s title run, with Prochazka claiming he has more weapons than the Brazilian in a stylistic showcase.

“The truth is there is more weapons on the Jamahal Hill side,” Jiri Prochazka told Sportskeeda during a recent interview. “But, we’ll see – let the better [fighter] win.”

Initially opening as a distinct betting favorite to beat Illinois native, Hill, Pereira’s talents were severely doubted by the former – who claimed that fans who are fawning over the GLORY Kickboxing Hall of Famer’s attributes, should actually be switching their interest to him

Jiri Prochazka and Alex Pereira

Jiri Prochazka and Alex Pereira delivered one of the most intense pre-fight moments in UFC history.

On November 11, 2023, ‘Denisa’ returned to the Octagon for the first time in nearly a year and a half determined to reclaim the light heavyweight title he never lost. Standing in his way was two-time GLORY Kickboxing world champion and former UFC middleweight king Alex Pereira.

It would be a battle between two of the most dangerous heavy hitters in all of MMA. As if fans weren’t hyped enough, the staredown between Prochazka and Pereira seconds before going toe-to-toe inside the cage sent shivers down the spines of every fan tuning in. The moment has since been reposted, retweeted, and meme’d millions of times.

Looking back at that viral staredown during a Lowkick MMA exclusive interview with Mike Owens, Prochazka offered some insight into the message he was trying to send ‘Poatan’ before they started slinging leather in front of 19,000 fans inside the world’s most famous arena — Madison Square Garden.

“Every moment before the fight is important because you’re showing your spirit,” Prochazka said. “You’re showing your strength before the world and I really like to watch my opponent. To see through him and show him that there is no place inside myself for anything other than pure focus and winning.”

In the end, it was Alex Pereira who saw his hand raised after scoring a brutal second-round knockout against Prochazka to claim the vacant 205-pound crown.

‘Denisa’ will return to the Octagon on April 13 for UFC 300 when he meets fellow top-five ranked contender Aleksandar Rakic. With a strong showing against ‘Rocket,’ Prochazka would likely put himself back in line for another shot at recapturing the light heavyweight strap.

As for Alex Pereira, there is no official date for his first title defense, but his next opponent is expected to be another former champion who was forced to vacate the belt due to injury — Jamahal Hill.

Exclusive – Jiri Prochazka ready to ‘realize the mastery’ in UFC 300 return against Aleksandar Rakic

Jiri Prochazka

Following his loss to Alex Pereira in November, Jiri Prochazka was determined to get back inside the Octagon as fast as possible, regardless of opponent.

On April 13, ‘Denisa’ will look to climb back into the title picture at 205 when he meets No. 5 ranked contender Aleksandar Rakic at UFC 300 in Las Vegas. The fight will come five months removed from Prochazka’s devastating second-round knockout at the hands of ‘Poatan’ at the promotion’s 30th-anniversary event last year in Madison Square Garden.

Speaking with Mike Owens in a LowKick MMA exclusive interview, Prochazka — the division’s No. 2 ranked contender — explained that after coming up short in his last outing, he was eager to climb back in the cage. Rakic just happened to be the fighter who was ready, willing, and able to serve as the former champ’s dance partner on fight night.

“I don’t care about what the right fight is for me,” Prochazka said. “I wanted to be back as soon as possible and Alexander was the first one who was free from the top five guys at light heavyweight. So I called him about the fight.”

Jiri Prochazka Dubs Aleksandar Rakic a ’50/50 Fighter’

Aleksandar Rakic will be looking to bounce back after suffering a leg injury in the third round of his May 2022 clash with Jan Blachowicz. They were scheduled to run it back at UFC 297 last month, but Blachowicz underwent shoulder surgery, forcing him out of the bout.

‘Rocket’ goes into the contest with a 14-3 overall record, 6-2 under the UFC banner. Rakic has established himself as a bit of a knockout artist in his career, finishing nine of his opponents via KO, including Devin Clark and Jimi Manuwa inside the Octagon.

“He’s a 50/50 fighter,” Prochazka said of his UFC 300 opponent. “He’s a good wrestler. A really strong guy I think. His standup is not the best, but like I said, he’s 50/50. Good striker. Good wrestler and I’m ready for both.”

Prochazka’s loss to Alex Pereira snapped a 13-fight win streak dating back to 2016. It was also his first fight in 17 months, but ‘Denisa’ is making no excuses for his performance. Instead, he sees it as another opportunity to evolve his skill set and put his MMA mastery on display in his next outing.

“I want to realize the mastery,” he said. “Not just in the training. Not just in the daily life. Repeat, repeat. Be better. Be better, but in the cage. To show it in the cage. That’s what I want to show.”
