Joanna Jedrzejczyk will be the first challenger for Weili Zhang’s UFC women’s strawweight title.
The pair will meet at UFC 248 on March 7 from Las Vegas. Speaking on the “UFC Unfiltered” podcast, Jedrzejczyk broke down her matchup with Zhang. The Polish striker believes the matchup will go similar to her fight with Jessica Andrade from March of 2017. (H/T MMA Junkie)
“Definitely ‘and the new,’ but she’s strong animal,” Jedrzejczyk said. “She’s so big. She’s huge, and she throws very hard punches, but I’m more experienced, I think, through these championship bouts so many times, so I’m a real fighter. My conditioning is always on point, and I will have to be very clever, very sneaky, as well, and I think this fight with Zhang will be similar to the fight with Jessica Andrade.”
Jedrzejczyk won her fight with Andrade via unanimous decision. It was her last bout before suffering the first defeat of her career to Rose Namajunas. As for Zhang, she comes off a first-round TKO win over Andrade to win the 115-pound title in front of her native Chinese crowd.
Now, she’ll make her first title defense against Jedrzejczyk, the most dominant champion the division has ever seen.

UFC women’s strawweight champion Weili Zhang has been preparing to face Joanna Jedrzejczyk for a very long time.
Zhang became the new champion following an impressive first-round TKO victory over Jessica Andrade at UFC Shenzhen back in August. Her first title defense will now come against the former strawweight queen at UFC 248 on March 7 in Las Vegas.
And the Chinese star is very ready for what is arguably her biggest task yet.
“I have known about Joanna for a very long time, even before I was in the UFC,” Zhang told SCMP. “I have been preparing for her, and for this fight, for a long time. I know how she moves and how she fights. I always knew that one day we would meet inside the Octagon. I am preparing everything. I am ready.”
Zhang is so prepared for Jedrzejczyk that she even claims she will be fighting in the Polish fighter’s own style.
“I have been training for speed and for power, working on my footwork,” Zhang added. “I am going to fight Joanna in Joanna’s way. No matter if it is wrestling or striking I am ready. Just like my fight in Shenzhen, I will be ready for different situations.”
There is no word as of yet whether the fight will headline UFC 248. However, it’s the only title fight on the card as of now.

Former UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk isn’t done at 125 pounds.
Jedrzejczyk, although on her quest to regain the 115-pound championship, still has a potential 125-pound title run in her future plans. The Polish striker was unsuccessful in taking the flyweight throne from Valentina Shevchenko last December. She dropped the bout via decision after five rounds inside the Octagon. Now, Jedrzejczyk has found her way back to the strawweight title picture, as she prepares for a fight with champion Weili Zhang.
However, speaking at a UFC 245 media scrum recently, Jedrzejczyk admitted that she still has her eye on the 125-pound division (H/T MMA News)
“Yeah, maybe in the future. Before my fight with Valentina Shevchenko, I didn’t have enough time to prepare for this fight for a different division, you know? Jedrzejczyk said. “I had only six weeks to prepare and face one of the greatest.”
Jedrzejczyk believes, had she had more time to prepare for her title fight at flyweight, things would’ve been very different. It’s for that very reason she wants to give 125 pounds another go.
“So definitely,” Jedrzejczyk said. “That’s the plan for the future.”
