Conor McGregor’s coach would like to see his fighter do battle with Justin Gaethje at welterweight. While there’s no doubting that team McGregor plans to regain gold, timing also plays a factor. Khabib Nurmagomedov is scheduled to put the UFC lightweight title on the line against Tony Ferguson on April 18. McGregor doesn’t want to […]

Don’t expect to wait a while to see Conor McGregor back in action.
McGregor returned for the first time in 15 months when he faced Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 on Saturday night. Coming aggressive right from the get-go, McGregor blitzed “Cowboy” en route to a dominant 40-second TKO victory in the first round.
The attention then turned to who his next opponent should be. UFC president Dana White believes a rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov makes sense. However, Nurmagomedov defends his lightweight title against Tony Ferguson in April.
Should he win that fight, he likely won’t compete for a couple of months because of Ramadan. Even still, McGregor’s head coach Kavanagh doesn’t expect McGregor to be out of action too long.
In fact, he believes his student will definitely fight again before the summer:
“Before the summer? I’d be very surprised if he wasn’t going to compete before the summer,” Kavanagh said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday. “There’s talk of March, April. Definitely going to be competing before the summer. What I think would make sense is we get ready. We prepare for the April fight [between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson]. If one of those guys is unfortunate enough to not be able to make the walk, then we’re ready to go.
“Then if that’s not there, schedule one within a few weeks of that April fight. Then you’re kind of on the same timeline as those guys for a fight a couple of months after that.”
As for who Kavanagh would like to see McGregor face if Nurmagomedov and Ferguson do end up fighting?
“Justin Gaethje at 170. That would be my personal choice,” he added.
Do you think we’ll see McGregor back before the summer?

McGregor has dealt with a string of legal issues after continuously getting himself into trouble. In that time, McGregor’s support has seemed to dip within the general public. However, according to McGregor’s longtime coach, John Kavanagh, the former champion’s Irish support remains strong.
It’s hard to go anywhere with “The Notorious” without being mobbed by fans, as he explained in an interview with the “Eurobash” podcast. (H/T MMA Fighting)
“I’d love for people to spend a little bit of time, like I do, driving through town with Conor or having to call into a shop with Conor, and being mobbed for selfies and people shaking his hand and congratulating him,” said Kavanagh. “I think people sometimes confuse Twitter life with real life and believe stuff on Twitter, but very, very few people are on Twitter.
“In real life, when you’re going through Dublin and the airport, there are crowds of people screaming and running up to us. I’m not sure I agree with that, maybe there will be a couple of people on Twitter that will write something nice after it if he wins, but I wouldn’t hold my breathe on that.”
When asked again if McGregor’s Irish fanbase has dwindled since his UFC 229 loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov, Kavanagh insisted, the mob remains.
“When I’m physically with him, no…all I see is mobs of fans.”
McGregor is scheduled to take on Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in the main event of UFC 246 on pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada this weekend (Sat. January 18, 2020).
What do you think about Kavanagh’s assessment of McGregor’s Irish support?

Conor McGregor will make his highly-anticipated return to the Octagon later this month (Sat. January 18, 2020) in the main event of UFC 246 on pay-per-view (PPV).
McGregor takes on Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone at welterweight. It will be McGregor’s first fight since his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in October of 2018. That was only the second time McGregor lost under the UFC’s banner. His first defeat was a submission loss to Nate Diaz at UFC 196, a fight McGregor bounced back from by rematching Diaz and winning via decision.
”I think it’s even more because the Diaz fight was ‘Okay, we’re going to train hard for four months, I want to get that rematch, I shouldn’t have lost the way I lost.’ That was the motivation and the mentality,” Kavanagh said. (via MMA Mania)
“This one is different because it’s not a rematch against Khabib, it’s just ‘a fight’ if you want to look at it that way. It’s more a return to really loving all aspects of it and trying to make the training around that, around the passion he had around getting ready for any fight, let’s say, or the Aldo fight when training was fun, experimenting with techniques and looking for new moves.
“So it’s different than the motivation being revenge. The motivation here seems to be love, and love is stronger than revenge.”
Furthermore, McGregor seems to be taking the lead in regards to his training camp for Cerrone, as Kavanagh praised McGregor’s combat sports IQ.
“With Conor’s fighting IQ, with Conor’s understanding of the game, really, this training camp is about all of us getting out of his way,” Kavanagh said (via MMA Fighting). “Provide him an environment where he gets different looks, different feels, and support him.
“Where he wants the training camp to go, with intensities, and listening to him – where he has days where he has days where he wants to push hard, and days where he wants to slow down. It’s not so much about us coaches sitting down to game plan and then filling Conor in. Conor knows more about fighting than the rest of us put together.”
What do you make of Kavanagh saying McGregor’s motivation for his UFC return is love?
