John Kavanagh’s tweet about Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson less than two weeks ago has ended up backfiring — for now.

Following the heated press conference between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson for their April 18 fight at UFC 249, Kavanagh had this to say:

“The only thing that could stop this fight would be some sort of pandemic virus spiralling out of control and that’ll never happen.”

Given that the fight previously failed to come to fruition four times, Kavanagh seemed to be testing fate. And with the coronavirus outbreak right now, the fight appears to be in serious jeopardy once again.

Of course, at the time of the tweet, the coronavirus was still a major issue. However, it wasn’t classified as a pandemic at the time nor were sports leagues around the world suspended.

And so, Kavanagh tweeted Monday after seemingly jinxing the fight:

“Me and my stupid mouth ?”

While the UFC have indefinitely postponed its next three events, Dana White has maintained that Nuramgomedov vs. Ferguson will still happen next month and will likely take place outside the United States. So maybe all is not lost as of yet.

Do you think we’ll still see Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson?

There was a ton of controversy surrounding the scoring of last night’s (Sat. February 8, 2020) main event at UFC 247.

Jon Jones put his light heavyweight championship on the line against Dominick Reyes. Jones and Reyes went five rounds in a very close fight, that many believe Reyes actually should’ve won on the scorecards, giving the challenger the first three rounds, while the final two were fairly clear for “Bones.” With that being said, the Texas judging awarded Jones the decision win by way of a unanimous decision.

Even one judge scored the fight 4-1 for Jones, a scorecard Joe Rogan called “insane.” However, according to Conor McGregor and SBG Ireland head coach John Kavanagh, he scored it a fairly “clear victory” for the defending champion. Taking to Twitter, Kavanagh explained that, even though he’s probably wrong to do so, he scores the championship rounds higher than the first three.

“I know I’m wrong to do what I do because I’m not a trained judge but I will always weight later rounds more heavily than earlier ones. I ask myself who would survive a no time/rule encounter. Because of that it was a clear @JonnyBones victory for me.”

It will be interesting to see how the UFC handles things with Jones and the light heavyweight division moving forward. The consensus within the MMA community seems to be that the judging in Houston was horrendous, and Reyes was not given a fair shake. Given that, there has already been chatter of an immediate rematch, something even UFC president Dana White hasn’t shut down.

What do you think about Kavanagh scoring the UFC 247 main event for Jones?

Everyone has thrown in their two cents on who Conor McGregor should face next. However, now we’ve heard from the Irishman’s own coach, John Kavanagh, who is throwing out a name not many have since UFC 246 this past weekend (Sat. January 18, 2020).

Speaking on “The Ariel Helwani MMA Show,” Kavanagh suggested he’d like to see McGregor face off against top-ranked lightweight contender Justin Gaethje, however, at 170 pounds. (H/T MMA Junkie)

“Justin Gaethje at 170,” Kavanagh said. “That would be my personal preference … because he’s another lightweight. Neither of them have to cut weight and the goal – I’ll be careful with my words here – the kind of vision is to get that 155-pound belt back so it’s a step towards that.”

Kavanagh was asked why he’d want to see the fight at welterweight when both McGregor and Gaethje are top contenders in the lightweight division. Coach Kavanagh said that he’d like to see the fight organized much like McGregor vs. Donald Cerrone this past weekend.

Two lightweight fighters who simply didn’t cut weight for their bout. When the lightweight title fight comes, then they can cut weight again.

“I don’t see the reason for him to cut weight unless there’s a significant – there has to be a belt on the line,” Kavanagh said. “Otherwise, why would he do it? So yeah, stay at this weight, don’t cut weight and then when the big one comes along, shed the last 15 pounds.”

Gaethje was a name that many wanted to see McGregor fight instead of “Cowboy” this past weekend. Fans speculated that Gaethje would be McGregor’s return opponent at 155 pounds. Had McGregor defeated Gaethje, there would be no argument that he’d deserve a lightweight title opportunity next.

Especially since Gaethje is currently on a three-fight win streak in which he has finished all of his opponents via first-round TKO or KO. However, the UFC opted to go with Cerrone instead, a decision that seemed to really irk Gaethje. With that being said, although Kavanagh would like to see McGregor vs. Gaethje at 170 pounds, it doesn’t sound like that’s the route the UFC will go.

The fight the majority of the MMA community seems to want to see is McGregor vs. Jorge Masvidal. However, UFC president Dana White seems intent on holding McGregor back until the conclusion of Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson for the lightweight title in April, so McGregor can challenge the winner. It will be interesting to see what the Las Vegas-based MMA organization ultimately decides to do with its top star, who wants to compete again before this summer.

What do you think about Kavanagh suggesting McGregor face Gaethje at welterweight next?
