When Jon Jones defends his light heavyweight title against Thiago Santos at UFC 239 this summer, rising star Johnny Walker is backing “Bones.”

Speaking to The Body Lock MMA, Walker explained that he wants Jones to emerge victorious for his own selfish reasons. The young Brazilian has always envisioned himself being the one to finally best Jones inside the cage:

“Only Jon Jones [is who I have an eye on],” Walker said. “I grew up watching this guy. I played with him in the UFC game and it [would] make me very happy to fight against him.

“I would beat him. [But] I want to enjoy the fight. I hope I don’t finish the fight very quickly because I want to enjoy the fight, enjoy the moment. Because this is my dream coming true.”

Walker has been an impressive force inside the Octagon as of late. After three straight knockout victories, fans are already calling for the 27-year-old to challenge Jones. However, Walker thinks he might need one more big win before that happens. That win could be over the winner of Alexander Gustafsson and Anthony Smith at UFC Stockholm this summer:

“I have no idea [who wins that fight] because Gustafsson is not the same fighter as before. I don’t know, last fight against Jon Jones, maybe he didn’t feel good, something happened, but you never know.

“Smith? Smith is good but he’s not good enough. He doesn’t finish fights, I don’t know if he has the power to finish fights. I hope Gustafsson wins, maybe a fight against him after this.”

Johnny Walker has quickly risen to prominence in the UFC.

The young Brazilian has been knocking out contenders left and right inside the Octagon. His latest appearance inside the cage resulted in a 36-second finish against gritty veteran Misha Cirkunov. Many believe Walker could challenge for the light heavyweight throne fairly quickly.

However, as he told Cageside Press, Walker wants to get a bit more experience before jumping immediately into the elite side of the division:

“I have to take my time, get more experience, and maybe in two years, I’m capable of a title shot as well,” Walker said. “I want to make sure, when I be there, I hold the belt for a long time, I have to get more experience.

“I’m in no rush. I’m twenty-six, I have time. Give me the names, send me location, I’m ready.”

Former UFC light heavyweight title challenger, Volkan Oezdemir, caught wind of Walker’s comments. He called the Brazilian’s intended career path the “coward’s way”:

“I understand that it’s smart, but for me it’s all about risk and reward,” Oezdemir told Bloody Elbow. “If you are willing to go out there and prove you are the best, you don’t want to take time off and be all about security.

“I think that’s a coward’s move. If you really want to prove you’re the best you should just f—king do it.”

Oezdemir will fight on tomorrow’s (Sat. March 16, 2019) UFC London card. He’ll be facing Dominick Reyes in what’s expected to be a tremendous 205-pound contest. If he pulls off a big win in London, Oezdemir might just find himself standing across the Octagon from Walker next.

One of the fastest-rising stars in the UFC at the moment is light heavyweight knockout artist Johnny Walker.

Walker comes off back-to-back knockout victories coming in at just under a minute. The latter came against proven veteran and top-ranked Misha Cirkunov. Now, Walker is ready to prove himself against the division’s elite, calling out the likes of three-time title challenger Alexander Gustafsson.

If Walker is able to topple the likes of Gustafsson, Anthony Smith, and others, he might be on his way to a match-up against division king Jon Jones. Speaking to The Mac Life recently, “Bones” revealed he’s “very aware” of what the young Brazilian is doing in the division at the moment:

“Johnny Walker is somebody that I’m very aware of,” Jones said. “I know I’m gonna be fighting him sooner or later. I just appreciate his energy. He seems like a nice guy, he just radiates his happiness and his positivity, and it’s refreshing.

“He seems like the type of guy I’d go out and have a beer with. He’s cool. He seems cool… until we fight. And then after I beat him, he’ll be cool again.”

While Walker might take a while to reach a title opportunity, Jones has no shortage of challengers. Thiago Santos is believed to be the next man up to challenge for Jones’ 205-pound throne.

“Bones” is coming off a successful title defense at UFC 235 weekend (Sat. March 2, 2019). He defeated Anthony Smith in the main event of UFC 235 via unanimous decision.
