Johnny Walker will take his first step into the deep side of the UFC’s light heavyweight pool in Las Vegas today.

Walker faces Misha Cirkunov at UFC 235 on pay-per-view (PPV) tonight (Sat. March 2, 2019). The young Brazilian has been dominant thus far in his UFC run with a pair of first-round knockout finishes. He trounced Justin Ledet at UFC on ESPN+ 2 last month in only 15 seconds.

With such short fights under the UFC banner, Walker hasn’t been able to really show off his full arsenal to the MMA community. He hopes he’s able to drag Cirkunov into the third round in Las Vegas in order to change that (via MMAjunkie):

“I think Misha can give me a hard fight,” Walker said. “I hope to make three rounds against him because I need to test myself. If we fight three rounds it would be good. People can see my game and be scared.

“I can do something that nobody saw. Something new, I can do. I will try. I’m not scared to try every move, something crazy. This will make me so proud.”

Walker will have no easy night at the office against Cirkunov, who is a proven finisher inside the Octagon. None of his fights in the UFC have ever gone the distance. In his last outing, the Canadian submitted Patrick Cummins in the first round with an arm-triangle choke.

UFC 235 is shaping up to be one of the biggest cards of the year.

However, one light heavyweight contest just lost one of its competitors. Former interim 205-pound title challenger Ovince Saint Preux has been forced out of his scheduled fight with Misha Cirkunov due to an injury. As a result, rising light heavyweight prospect Johnny Walker wants to pounce on the opportunity.

Walker comes off a big 15-second knockout win over Justin Ledet at UFC on ESPN+ 2 from Brazil. After having a fight with Jimi Manuwa at UFC London denied, Walker now looks to face Cirkunov in Vegas. He posted the following on Instagram:

“Hey @mishac911 , I heard you need a new opponent for UFC 235? I might know someone… @ufc@danawhite I am waiting for the call”

The card already features two high-profile title bouts. UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will defend his strap against Anthony Smith in the main event. It will be “Bones’” first title defense since 2015. In the co-main event, Tyron Woodley will defend his welterweight title yet again. He’ll face Kamaru Usman, who has been making huge strides at 170 pounds.

UFC 235 goes down live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 2, 2019.

Johnny Walker had no shortage of confidence coming off his 15-second victory over Justin Ledet at UFC Fortaleza last weekend.

After his victory, Walker called out longtime UFC light heavyweight veteran Jimi Manuwa to a fight. Walker hoped for a quick turnaround to face Manuwa on the UFC London card form the O2 Arena on March 16th. The fight certainly makes sense, as Manuwa – currently on a three-fight losing streak – gets the opportunity to fight in front of his native English crowd.

Walker would also get to test himself against a proven top contender at 205 pounds. However, Manuwa doesn’t seem to be too interested in that fight. He noted that he’s currently injured, otherwise he’d already be on the UFC London card. Manuwa also said he doesn’t need Walker to make a fight:

“Everyone knows I’m injured or I’d be fighting in London in March. I defo don’t need no Johnny Walker to make a fight.”

Walker’s 15-second victory in Brazil propelled him into the top 15 at light heavyweight. With a big win over a fighter the caliber of Manuwa, that could be the Brazilian’s ticket to some high-level contests at light heavyweight.

The division is certainly wide open for young competitors at the moment. Perhaps Walker is on the fast track to a UFC championship opportunity.
