With his latest criminal charges now behind him, Jon Jones is looking ahead to a very bright 2022 decorated in gold.

In September, Jon Jones was arrested on charges of battery domestic violence and injuring/tampering with a vehicle. On December 14, those charges were resolved, with the domestic violence charge being dropped and Jones being fined $750 in restitution fees for damaging a police vehicle.

Before the world became privy to Jones’ legal update, the former light heavyweight king was well aware of his unfettered state. A day after his court date, he was right back in the gym, seeking to rebound from an inactive yet tumultuous 2021 and make 2022 a clean start in a new division with some fresh gold.

“I said I’ll be the champion in 2022, that’s exactly what I’m going to do. I feel like I’m jumping up three weight classes, going from competing at 205 pounds to 265 pounds is no easy task. Nothing great happened overnight, I’m patient and I’m working my ass off every day towards my goals,” Jones posted to Instagram.

Jon Jones’ 2022 plans include an expectation of challenging the winner of UFC 270’s main event between Francis Ngannou(c) and Ciryl Gane for the heavyweight title. Jones has not competed since February 2020 and announced his move to heavyweight that summer.

Since then, Jones has been actively updating his progress on social media and has also experienced a change in gym scenery. After a highly publicized split with JacksonWink MMA, Jones is now dividing his time between a JacksonWink affiliate gym and Train Ready in Arizona alongside “Triple C” Henry Cejudo.

Do you think Jon Jones will become the UFC heavyweight champion in 2022?

Schaub Blasts Jones For Touting Religion After Domestic Violence Arrest

Brendan Schaub Jon Jones

Brendan Schaub is not happy with Jon Jones for talking about God after being arrested for domestic violence.

Schaub has had some big things to say in the wake of Jones being arrested once again. Jones is accused of headbutting a cop car in Las Vegas after an incident with his wife that saw his children reportedly begging hotel staff to call authorities. Following this incident, the former light heavyweight champion seemingly downplayed the whole thing, sharing videos of him and his wife together and saying that he was finding the right path in life.

One of these messages in the wake of this arrest saw Jones saying that his life could have been over after the incident, but God had other plans. This was the same tweet in which he made the ill-fated claim of being 60 days sober, just 58 days after the Las Vegas arrest.

“‘Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour,'” Jones wrote. “My family, my life, my career could’ve been over after what happened in Las Vegas. But God had other plans for me. 60 days sober and counting”

Brendan Schaub seemed to take particular umbrage with the statement that God had other plans for Jon Jones. Speaking on the Fighter and the Kid podcast, the retired heavyweight turned stand-up comedian lambasted Jones for bringing God into this, saying that he is self-sabotaging himself and has likely lost tons of money over the years due to his various issues.

“God had nothing to do with you hitting your wife, my man,” Schaub said (h/t Bloody Elbow). “I was speaking with someone very high up from the UFC about Jon Jones and that guy was like, ‘think how much money he has missed out on, with all the bullshit he’s done in his life. The millions and millions of dollars, the Nike endorsement, the big fights, everything!… Self-sabotage.”

Brendan Schaub certainly brings up a valid point about the things that have been lost due to the bad decisions that Jon Jones has made in his life. Time will tell if the former champ will get things back on track or if this will just end up being another chapter in a cautionary tale.

Daniel Cormier Jon Jones

Daniel Cormier is not buying the claims of sobriety of Jon Jones.

Jones recently made the statement that he was 60 days sober in the wake of the domestic violence charges that saw him allegedly assaulting his fiancée and headbutting a cop car while intoxicated. The only problem with this claim is the fact that, at the time of Jones posting this tweet, he was only 58 days removed from that incident in Las Vegas.

This was something that MMAJunkie’s Mike Bohn pointed out on Twitter, stating the inconsistency in what Jones was saying versus the facts. After seeing this, former champ-champ and bitter rival to Jones, Daniel Cormier, responded by pointing out how amusing it is that Jones cannot keep track of his own alleged sobriety.

“That is hilarious!” Cormier wrote.

Cormier has routinely made the case that Jones is a truly bad person and that he does not think that will ever change. Judging by his reaction to this claim from Jonny Bones, it appears he still feels the same way and that he does not think Jones can be trusted to even be honest about his claims of sobriety.

At the end of the day, the only person that Jon Jones is accountable to regarding his sobriety is himself. It does not matter if it is Daniel Cormier, Mike Winkeljohn, or anyone else, time has proven that the former light heavyweight champion is only going to make changes if he is the one wanting to do it.

What do you make of Jon Jones’s apparent error in his sobriety count?

Chael Sonnen seems to be fed up with the antics of Jon Jones.

Sonnen and Jones have had a contentious relationship that did not even really start until after they fought. The last few years have seen the Bad Guy roasting the former light heavyweight champion over his litany of mistakes, both personally and professionally.

The most recent exchange between the two came after Jones was told by Mike Winkeljohn that he was not allowed to train at his gym. Sonnen posted to his YouTube, going off on Jones for tweeting and deleting about his team, despite what Sonnen calls “selfish” actions on a regular basis.

Jon put a tweet on this and he deleted it and it was just disgusting. The tweet was disgusting and he said, ‘it hurts really bad to have one of my coaches who I respect so much turn away from me, for the rest of the coaches going for that fight with me, we continue,’ and then he deleted it. The reason that tweet is disgusting is he used the word team. You have the most selfish guy in sport using the word team when convenient,” Sonnen said (h/t Sportskeeda).

This prompted a trademark response from Jones: the ol’ tweet-and-delete. Luckily, Twitter user Chris Taylor caught a screenshot of his reply, which severed as a quick reminder of how the fight between him and Sonnen went down.

“At 4:33 of the very first round, and still living rent free,” Jones wrote.

It goes without saying that Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen will not be buddies anytime soon.

Dana White said that Jon Jones has demons to work through, and it seems he was right.

Jones has been the subject of backlash recently, and rightfully so considering the nature of his most recent run-in with the law. When White was asked for his thoughts on the former light heavyweight champ being arrested for domestic violence charges, the UFC President said that he was not surprised to see that happen and that Jones has some demons to work through.

During his latest string of tweet-and-deletes, in the wake of his coach Mike Winkeljohn revealing he was no longer welcome at the gym, Jones opened up a bit about what some of these demons are. In a Twitter post that he deleted almost immediately, he said that some of the difficulties in his life included being some serious traumas.

“My life wasn’t always great man, being molested as a child, losing a parent and sibling to disease at a young age. It goes on and on man. I got things I need to deal with,” Jones wrote (h/t MMA Reporter Adam Guillen for the screenshot).

This is a serious thing for Jones to admit to and open up about and does a lot to paint a picture of potentially why he has made some of the bad decisions that he has over the years. That being said, it is important to realize that this does not do anything to justify any of the actions that are alleged to have happened recently, nor the other hiccups he has had in life.

At the end of the day, Jon Jones is the only one who is to blame for the decisions that he makes, no matter what his background is. Nevertheless, this is still a tragic backstory from one of the greatest fighters to ever compete in the Octagon.

Coach Mike Winkeljohn has shunned Jon Jones from the gym, following his most recent legal issues.

Jones has been a mainstay at the Jackson-Winkeljohn gym in Albuquerque, NM for many years. They have been a big part of making him one of the greatest fighters of all time, no matter what Dana White might think about the coaching staff.

However, following Jones’s most recent arrest for domestic violence charges, he is no longer allowed to train at this gym. Coach Mike Winkeljohn spoke on The MMA Hour and explained that he had a conversation with the former light heavyweight champ and told him that until he can get sober and stay that way for a while, he is not able to train in the gym.

“I’m very disappointed. It’s tough. The hardest part is when you hear that his daughters said that you’ve gotta call the police officers,” Winkeljohn said. It’s just tough because, from my standing, I’ve got three daughters. I have a wife, three daughters, a mom. I teach women’s self-defense called Smart Girls Self Defense. It just makes it hard when he keeps getting in trouble. But I just had a conversation with him. I said, ‘Jon, here’s the deal man. You’re like my little brother. You have to stop drinking and fix these things (before) you come back to the gym.”

“So at the moment, he’s out of the gym. He’s not allowed to come to the gym, because I feel I had to do that. Because ignoring it and expecting different results, as they say, is insanity. He has a lot of yes people around him that won’t tell him the truth. So he might hate me for it, but I had to tell him the truth. But in my heart, gosh, that guy is capable of greatness, and I’m not just talking about fighting. In my heart, I hope he comes back and wins the heavyweight title, stops drinking, and comes forward and goes on to bigger things.”

This is a massive move from Winkeljohn, given the fact that Jon Jones is easily the biggest name who trains at this highly popular gym. However, he says that he wants to ensure that the ladies whom he teaches self-defense to know that he has their back.

That said, he has not given up hope that Jones will be able to right the ship. He says that if the former champ can get the right team around him and get rid of the “yes men” in his posse, he will be able to get back on track.

“Jon would never do anything bad if he wasn’t drunk. Honestly, that’s it. But he’s gotta fix it,” Winkeljohn said.

“In my heart, I do (think he can fix it). If he’s willing to accept the truth, and if others out there stop being yes people, I think it will help. But honestly, it’s no one else’s fault. This is just a decision between he and I, and I hope I made the right decision. If not, I’m okay with it.”

A lot of people feel that Jon Jones has not really faced any consequences for his repeated run-ins with the law over the last few years. Perhaps this decision from Mike Winkeljohn was part of the reason he supposedly decided to give up drinking, serving as a wake-up call for one of the greatest of all time.
