News came yesterday that former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones had been jailed for a probation violation due to the five traffic tickets he received during a stop in Albuquerque, New Mexico last Thursday.

The scene was a polarizing one, as opinions seem to waver between disgust at Jones’ inability to stay out of trouble to views that the police officer in question acted out of spite and was merely looking for any reason to ticket Jones.

The embattled pound-for-pound king, who was handed probation after he infamously ran a red light and hit a 25-year-old pregnant Albuquerque woman in April 2015, soon appeared in a video of the stop calling the officer a ‘f*****g liar’ and a ‘pig,’ and it remains to be seen if and how that affects his court appearance (courtesy of MMA Fighting):

It appears the world will find out Jones’ fate, at least to some degree, very soon, as a report surfaced from MMA Fighting today that Jones remains detained at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center and will appear before judge Michael Martinez at 8 a.m. on Thursday morning (April 1, 2016). The fighter was not granted bail due to his case being a probation violation, so the New Mexico Second Judicial District Court will decide Jones’ terms of release tomorrow.

The proceedings will air on Albuquerque news station KOB.

Jones was officially charged with misdemeanors drag racing, exhibition driving, use of modification of exhaust system, failure to maintain traffic lane and improper display of registration plate, with the final two charges being petty misdemeanors.

However, the much more pressing issue is that Jones was on probation for the felony hit-and-run from last year, and he was also stopped for driving 75 miles per hour in a 35 mile per hour zone this January, for which he was granted a warning if he agreed to not get any more tickets for 90 days. He did not fulfill those terms, so even though many feel the police treated him unfairly in this situation, his fate will be up to Judge Martinez.

This obviously couldn’t be much more of a distraction as Jones prepares for arguably the biggest fight of his legendary MMA career against Daniel Cormier in the main event of April 23’s UFC 197, but Jones’ team is confident he’ll be able to clear his name when given a chance to ‘explain the facts.’

Based on his recent track record, however, it could be tough for a judge to side with Jones rather than the police in this instance, so we’ll just have to wait on pins and needles to find out if one of the biggest fights of 2016 is allowed to proceed.

If former UFC champion Jon Jones wants to get off easy for his latest run-in with New Mexico police as he expects to, the content of a recent video of the incident won’t help his cause.

After news of Jones being ticketed for drag racing and four other different offenses was broke by the fighter himself on today’s episode of The MMA Hour, TMZ Sports obtained a police video of the traffic stop last Thursday night, where he said that he said a few things he regretted, and indeed he wasn’t fibbing about that.

In fact, “Bones” went on to further his reputation as a villian by calling the officer who pulled him “a f***ing liar’ and a ‘pig.’

Check it out:

But that was far from all Jones said, as the whole interaction could have the troubled former champion in some hot water given that he’s still on probation for the Albuquerque hit-and-run that ended with him being stripped of his title and suspended by the UFC last year.

Heading into his long-awaited comeback tilt against hated rival Daniel Cormier at April 23’s UFC 197, former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones sent a collective scare throughout the MMA world when it was unveiled that he was due in court for driving without a license or insurance during a traffic stop.

It might not sound like all that big of a deal, but it was of course magnified by the fact that ‘Bones’ was still on probation for an April 2015 hit-and-run incident that left a pregnant woman with a fractured arm. His rematch with Cormier is still on as of right now, but today (Friday, February 19, 2015) an audio recording from TMZ revealed that the troubled but dominant fighter caught quite the break when he was caught traveling a huge amount above the speed limit.

In the recording, the officer who stopped him can first be heard informing Jones he had been clocked going 75 miles per hour in a 35 mile-per-hour zone. Jones played it coy:

“Was I? Man, yeah, I didn’t realize I was.”

‘Bones’ then continued to plea his case by stating he didn’t have his license and was only headed to practice:

“I don’t; I don’t have my license. I was headed to Jackson’s MMA. I have a practice at 8:30.”

Then asked for his registration, Jones didn’t even know what that looks like, let alone have it:

“Um, is this it?”

Responding with a resounding, “No, the officer got a bit testy at the whole situation, where he had been provided none of the routine paperwork required to legally drive a car in any state. He continued to question Jones about his insurance documentation:

“So you don’t have anything with you then – you don’t have a license with you, no registration, no insurance? So where’s the insurance man?”

The stop got strange and questionable on his part when Jones proclaimed he didn’t know it was illegal to drive without insurance:

“I don’t know. You don’t know? No, I don’t know. So why you driving with no insurance,

dude? Is that illegal? You know it’s illegal man. No I don’t. Yes. Everybody has to have insurance. The car’s insured. But you gotta have a proof of insurance. Just because you’re telling me it’s legit doesn’t mean it’s legit. Yeah, I understand. I mean I gotta see some proof.”

Things sound pretty crazy at this point, but rest assured it gets even stranger when Jones attempts to explain why he’s driving without a license.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is in legal trouble again and at a bad time for him. The UFC just announced that he would fight Daniel Cormier in a rematch for the light heavyweight title at UFC 197 in April.

Jones was cited for driving without a license, registration, and insurance, by a Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Deputy on January 31st. KRQE News 13 was the first to report the news.

Jones has already had a series of run-ins with the law in the past.

In 2011, he was ticketed in Albuquerque in 2011 for driving with a suspended license. In 2012, he was convicted of DWI in New York after he crashed into a pole. In April of 2015, he had a hit and run incident that injured a pregnant women. This crime resulted in the UFC stripping him of the light heavyweight title and suspending him indefinitely.

Jones plead guilty in September to one felony count of leaving the scene of a crash, which resulted in Jones being convicted of a 4th-degree felony. The judge granted Jones a conditional discharge in the case. He will have supervised probation for up to 18 months. The judge ordered Jones to make 72 appearances as part of his probation. The UFC then reinstated him as an active fighter.

Jones is due to appear in traffic court Wednesday morning.

This could affect his fight with Cormier depending on what kind of penalties he gets for these charges.

A congratulations is in order for the nominees of last week’s Comment of the Week contest, who really brought the funny when ripping on everything from debilitating diseases to spousal abuse. You sick sons a bitches truly make us proud.

That being said, there can only be one winner, and this week’s was decided by a margin of just 25 votes, so join us after the jump for the big reveal…

With 28.2 % of the vote, Landulf’s inspired vision of Jon Jones’ new Nike campaign walked away victorious, barely eeking out VivaHate’s Ortizian rant aimed at Hector Lombard.

On second thought, that reveal was kind of a letdown. Apologies.

In either case, Landulf, e-mail [email protected] with your real name, address, and shirt size, and we’ll get you hooked up ASAP. As for the rest of you nominees, keep your heads up. Maybe one day you’ll be funny enough to win a free t-shirt that was made by the tired, bleeding hands of 7 year-old Honduran children two years ago. Sure, one sleeve might be longer than the other, and some of them might say PageComato on the back, but what else can you expect? They’re illiterate for Christ’s sake.

[VIDEO] The UFC’s Finest React to the Jon Jones Incident

(R.I.P Geico Gecko. May your free soul never again be confused with a half-rate car insurance plan.)

You gotta love being a world famous sports figure, amirite? Every move examined under a magnifying glass, a legion of people claiming to hate you despite having never come within 100 miles of you before — it sounds fucking wonderful. Just ask Jon Jones. After he got a little tipsy behind the wheel with a couple of friends and wrecked his Bentley in the process, he no more than could check his pants for a bowl of chocolate pudding before said legions of the blind were ready and waiting to bash him anonymously or throw him their undying support.

Don’t be mistaken, Jones had some of the hate coming. The fact that he stated just one month before his brush up with the law that he would never, you know, have a brush up with the law or anything, made his fall from that high horse all the more painful. But so heavy lies the crown, in fact, that the guys over at Sportsnet called upon such UFC stars as Dominick Cruz, Junior dos Santos, and Frank Mir among other to help us cope with this devastating situation.

If you can’t tell by the sarcasm plastered across the last sentence, we are more willing to forgive Jones for his actions than most. The case seems to be the same with Mir, who was content to give the “we all make mistakes” response when questioned on the issue:

I get mad at people that are quick to judge him, you know, ‘How could you ever drink and drive?!’ And I’m not ever going to say it’s right; it’s wrong to drink and drive. But if you’re a person who drinks, and you’re going to tell me that you’ve never gotten behind the wheel when you’ve had more than one beer an hour, or one shot, or one glass of wine; you’ve drove when you shouldn’t have, and you made a mistake.

The difference is, is that he got bit on his bad mistake. The good thing that now, maybe he can learn from it now, and not continue to do that on, but we all fall down. The point is that you get back up and march forward, you acknowledge what you did…I want to meet the person that’s never screwed up.

Oh, Frank. Only you can have us questioning the legitimacy of your claims one day and in your corner the next.

Check out the video after the jump.

I don’t know about you, Potato Nation, but I side with Mir on this issue. We’re all human, and we like to treat celebrities as if they are something more than that. The television, the internet — they are like our rear windows into the rest of the world, the strip of land that prevents our peninsulas from breaking away from the motherland, if you will. And as Alfred Hitchcock already showed us, viewing someone’s life through one of these rear windows can truly warp one’s perception in regards to forming an opinion of another person. Granted, Jimmy Stewart’s character happened to be correct in his assumptions in that movie, but what I’m trying to say is that until you truly know the man, don’t be so quick to label him as a terrible person for making a couple of mistakes. We all have.

Then again, Jones could always go with dos Santos’ advice and never drink again, a bit of information that my brain can simply not compute.
