Well, that’s one way to look at it…

Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones was certainly not at his dominant best last night (Saturday April 23, 2016) but he got what he’d came for. A victory was essential for Jones, as his 15 months away from the sport needed to be moved on from, and the rematch with Daniel Cormier was looming in the distance. Of course “DC” was meant to be fighting “Bones” at UFC 197, but was replaced on short notice by Ovince St-Preux due to an injury. So how did it pan out for Jones?

Well, it was a tale of two fights, on the one hand you had a fighter coming back from over a year off, many controversies to overcome, and hoping to extend his legacy by yet another win. Then you had the other side of the coin, OSP the unlikely contender carrying a huge underdog status. As many had predicted, “Bones” came out on top, but it was by no means a classic performance.

Aside from completely controlling the fight, Jones didn’t really look to finish it at any point, perhaps par for the course of a former champion looking to guarantee a victory in his return fight. That said, he’s cause a bit of a stir with his ‘safe’ gameplan, as you’ll have heard with his originally scheduled opponent Daniel Cormier. The current UFC light-heavyweight champ says he ‘would have beaten’ Jones had they fought last night, and two UFC veterans in Gilbert Melendez and Chael Sonnen sound like they agree with that statement.

Chael Sonnen

‘The American Gangster’ and ‘El Nino,’ both current ESPN analysts and UFC veterans, gave their opinions on Jon Jones’ performance last night. Neither were impressed, but a former opponent of “Bones,” Chael Sonnen seemed particularly displeased with what he saw.

Daniel Cormier Reacts To Jon Jones Showing Him The Finger

It may not have been vintage “Bones,” but it sure was classic Jon Jones… Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones returned to action last night (Saturday April 23, 2016) to take on Ovince St-Preux in the UFC 197 main event. Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones returned to action last night (Saturday April 23, 2016) to take on Ovince St-Preux in the UFC 197 main event. Daniel Cormier was originally scheduled to defend his title against Jones in the top spot, but was forced off the card due to injury. Replaced by OSP with two weeks notice, Cormier took up  sport with Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg in the commentary position. He watched his rival “Bones” defeat Saint Preux by unanimous decision in a reasonably one sided affair.

Jones was unable to get the finish, making it the fifth decision win in a row for the consensus pound-for-pound number one fighter. While calling the action, “DC” pointed out that Jones looked ‘rusty’ and joked he should have stayed on the card.

After 15 months out of action, perhaps the ex-champion was looking to get some rounds in, or maybe he was just a little rusty, but he tasted victory all the same. Undoubtedly he didn’t look completely like his former self, but maybe he just needed to blow the cobwebs away and get a solid victory in the books. Once the fight was over, we saw the vintage Jon Jones once again, as he flipped off Daniel Cormier on the way out of the octagon.

We saw a brief part of Daniel Cormier reacting to getting flipped off, but now his full conversation with Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg has been released. Needless to say he had a message for “Bones,” right before Mike Goldberg chimed in with possibly the lamest comment ever…

Five Reasons Jon Jones Will Destroy Ovince Saint-Preux

It’s once again fight day, but this time it’s particularly special, as the former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones makes his return to the octagon. After 15 months away from action, “Bones” was originally meant to challenge Daniel Cormier for the title. Instead the junior belt is on the line between Jones and Cormier’s injury alternate Ovince St-Preux. The odds will tell you that OSP is a long shot, Jones’ highlight reel record would also argue the same, but of course it’s a fight and anything can and often does happen.

All of the marbles of a shot at redemption lay in wait for “Bones,” and obviously a win for Saint-Preux would catapult him in to the elite status he’s been longing for. Unfortunately for the very likeable OSP, he’s facing a monster in the ex-champion.

Life is like a box of chocolates, and much like Jon Jones’ striking, you never know what you’re going to get. “Bones” mixes up his wide variety of striking techniques so well, that even if you think you know what’s coming, you won’t be able to defend it. His accuracy is insane, and the brutal force he delivers his elbows, knees, kicks, punches and spinning strikes with is simply scary to watch.

For Ovince St-Preux it’s going to be a very tough night for many reasons, but perhaps the most dangerous aspect for the unlikely contender is that unpredictability of Jones’ tool box.

UFC 197 is just one day away now, as former light-heavyweight champion and top heel Jon Jones plans to get back to his dominant win streak. Instead of facing the current light-heavyweight boss and boss and bitter rival Daniel Cormier, ‘Bones’ will be taking on Ovince St-Preux for the interim belt. ‘DC’ dropped out of the Las Vegas pay-per-view with an injury just two weeks ago, and OSP was given the chance of a lifetime, ad by far the biggest test of his career. Will it be a step too soon for the huge underdog? Time will tell.

But don’t get caught up in thinking this is a one trick card, flying under the radar in a big way is Demetrious Johnson vs. Henry Cejudo. The longest reigning current UFC champion and undoubtedly the greatest flyweight of all time, ‘Mighty Mouse’ will take on the dangerous Olympic wrestler Cejudo in his eighth attempted defense of the title.

Also noteworthy are extreme strikers Edson Barboza and former lightweight don Anthony Pettis, who’ll face off in what could well be fight of the night on the main card.
