Hold the phone on that reported ‘Wonderboy’ vs. Darren Till booking early next year.

After news arrived from The Los Angeles Times’ Lance Pugmire that top-ranked UFC welterweight Stephen Thompson would be taking on surging prospect Darren Till in the main event of UFC Fight Night 127 next February from London, Thompson’s coach and father Ray Thompson shot down the reported booking.

Responding to the report to MMAFighting.com, Thompson said ‘Wonderboy’ may have two broken thumbs and/or ligament damage from his decision win over Jorge Masvidal at last week’s UFC 217, and had not talked to anyone about the supposedly ‘done’ booking. In their eyes, Till should have to work his way up the stacked welterweight division before facing them:

“We’ve talked to no one [about fighting Till],” Ray Thompson added. “Not sure how this is a ‘done deal.’ As for Till, he needs to fight through the murderers row at welterweight like ‘Wonderboy’ did to get to the top.

Thompson elaborated more on their point of view, noting that they still want to fight top-ranked former champ Robbie Lawler, who will take on rising former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of December 16’s UFC on FOX 26. Thompson wondered why his son is essentially being moved out of contention after two incredibly close fights with champion Tyron Woodley:

“We want to fight forward. We’ve been calling out [Robbie] Lawler since before the first Woodley fight and have gotten crickets on it. Why? Why hasn’t anyone talked to us about it? No one from the UFC, no one from Lawler’s camp, no one. ‘Wonderboy’ had one of the most fantastic, exciting fights when he fought [Tyron] Woodley at UFC 205. That fight stole the show.

“The second fight was a snoozefest, mostly because Wonderboy chased Woodley around the Octagon for five rounds. We take part of the blame since we didn’t pull the trigger often enough. Since then we feel like we are being moved out of title contention. Not saying that’s the case but it sure looks that way. What happened to the rankings?”

‘Wonderboy’ himself also confirmed he had yet to be approached about fighting Till.

The unbeaten Liverpool native is gaining momentum in a big way after starching Donald Cerrone in the main event of October 21’s UFC Gdansk, and the UFC was reportedly looking to book him at UFC Fight Night 127 from Orlando. The promotion now reportedly wants to move the card to Liverpool, where they’ve looked into booking the Echo Arena, for Till to headline.

The unbeaten rising star has expressed interest in fighting the former title challenger Thompson, but sources close to him confirmed there have been no official talks as well.

What went wrong in this chain of communication for the UFC?

UFC 217 is a few hours away and the seventh episode of Embedded was released on the UFC’s YouTube channel.

In the episode, welterweight Jorge Masvidal recovers post weigh-in with a teammate and fellow Michael Bisping rival, Yoel Romero. Later that day all three champions – Michael Bisping, Cody Garbrandt and Joanna Jedrzejczyk – as well as challengers Georges St-Pierre, TJ Dillashaw and Rose Namajunas make their way back to Madison Square Garden for ceremonial weigh-ins. Backstage, Jedrzejczyk takes issue with a member of Namajunas’ camp and makes no secret of her thoughts on the matter. And trash talk continues to fly from all of the champions as UFC 217 opponents square off one final time before Saturday’s mega-event.

Earlier this week, UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping and Jorge Masvidal were involved in a heated confrontation just days before their fights at UFC 217, which is slated to take place on Saturday, November 4th in New York at Madison Square Garden. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass, at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Bisping is set to defend his title against former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre in the main event while Masvidal will take on former title contender Stephen Thompson in a welterweight bout that will air on the main card.

Despite the two fighters not being in the same weight class, they did get into a verbal altercation on Wednesday as Bisping was on his way to open workouts.

As of this writing, it’s still not known as to why they exchanged words or the origin of their beef. Keep in mind that they have taken shots at each other on social media in the past. At the end of the day, Bisping and Masvidal got pretty heated with Masvidal at one point calling Bisping a gay slur.

Fast forward to Thursday’s UFC 217 press conference, the UFC middleweight champion addressed the issue when he was asked about Masvidal and the incident, and he brushed it off.

“Who?” Bisping said to media reporters (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting). “Ain’t no one up here called Jorge Masvidal. That little b*tch. Yeah, he’ll get a slap when the time is right.”

Masvidal and his manager Abe Kawa shared a video of the exchange with Bisping on social media. However, the video has since been deleted. It’s 2017, so the video is still online and will be for a long period of time.

“I honestly don’t know who he is,” Bisping said. “He’s been chatting some sh*t. I was like, who’s this weird looking motherf*cker with the straight hairline and Wolverine f*cking sideburns? Someone had to tell me who he was. I don’t know. The guy’s got a chip on his shoulder. I’ve heard he’s a piece of sh*t. He certainly acts like one.”

That was the case in New York today (Wed., November 1, 2017), where Bisping and Masvidal crossed paths and a heated war of words ensued. Needless to say (and not surprisingly) many expletives were thrown about by “The Count” and “Gamebred,” and Bisping even tossed out a steroid accusation towards Masvidal’s Amercian Top Team (ATT) teammate Yoel Romero while Masvidal used a homophobic slur that unfortunately seems to be working its way into too many MMA-related scuffles these days.

Jorge Masvidal isn’t wasting much time while he continues his path towards a welterweight title fight. The next fight lined up on his path comes at UFC 217 against former title contender Stephen Thompson.

If Masvidal is able to pick up the win at the upcoming event, then he believes he should be next in line for a shot at the 170-pound strap, which is currently held by Tyron Woodley.

“For the title, duh. Of course, I won against the guy that went 10 rounds with the champion. That’s my idea,” said Masvidal in a recent appearance on The MMA Hour.

UFC President Dana White has gone on record by stating that the winner of the upcoming fight between Robbie Lawler and Rafael dos Anjos would be getting next dibs at the title.

Thus, Masvidal might be waiting for a while. Make no mistake about it, this upcoming fight against Thompson has all the makings of a showstopper due to the fact that they both like to keep things on the feet and exchange, which typically makes for an exciting slugfest.

Masvidal believes the challenge is getting the karate expert to engage rather than giving off the illusion that he actually wants to fight.

“As long as he doesn’t get on his bike and run, it should be interesting. I’ve seen him do that in the past, he gets on that bike, side kicks the air and tries to win a decision and my plan is to stop that, put a hurting on him,” added Jorge, who came up short against Demian Maia at UFC 211.

Masvidal also spoke about Colby Covington’s controversial comments following his decision win over Maia this past weekend at UFC Fight Night 119. His comments didn’t go over well with the Brazilians, to say the least after he called them “filthy animals” who reside in a dump. Masvidal is backing up his American Top Team (ATT) training partner.

“There’s several ways to look at it. Did he cross the line? Did he go too far? It’s entertainment. It’s cool for people, as we’re walking out, to throw shit – my coach called me before he said any of that, but he said people were shoving him as he was walking through the open workouts,” revealed Masvidal.

“How disrespectful is that? They don’t take into consideration that we are human beings. Does he really mean that they are filthy animals? No, but it’s entertainment also. At the same time, if your being disrespected, if you come to Miami and people are throwing shit at you, spitting at you, shoving your corners. What’s going to happen? I think he’s all in the right, man, especially if it came from his heart, you can’t get mad at him, that’s how he feels.”

“Who gives a fuck what happens man, that’s my partner, he’s got my back, and I got his and don’t nobody want problems at the end of the day. I’ll tell you that right now.”
