After once again not being granted a rematch with featherweight champion Conor McGregor, former longtime champion and current interim title holder Jose Aldo asked to be released from the UFC, while also expressing his interest in retiring.

It looks as if Aldo, who most recently beat Frankie Edgar at July’s UFC 200, is sticking to his guns. “Scarface” recently told MMAFighting that he has a meeting scheduled with the UFC, although he said that he doesn’t expect anything to change:

“I’m waiting. That’s the situation now,” Aldo said. “We have a meeting scheduled to solve everything, but everything has been said already. We will see what happens in this meeting. I can talk more when I return.”

“(Dana White) can offer me anything,” Aldo said. “I started to get unmotivated back then, when I lost the belt. I was the champion for so long I had the right to get an immediate rematch and they didn’t give it to me, and I wanted to walk in a different direction but ‘Dede’ (Pederneiras) made me fight again. I went there, fought and won, and again (the rematch) didn’t come. I have no desire to fight again. I don’t have any excitement to fight anymore. I have other projects in my life. I wanted to retire as champion and I’m the champion today. I want to follow another path.”

While Aldo admitted that he doesn’t necessarily want to retire, he confirmed that he no longer has interest in fighting. In fact, the Brazilian said that it would be ‘great’ if he was released from his contract, and if he isn’t, well than he’ll just throw his next fight:

“I sat down with ‘Dede’ this week and talked. He tried to change my mind a little bit, but there’s no way. I’m very decided what I want,” Aldo said. “We’re going to this meeting and see what happens. ‘Dede’ knows what he wants. It’s not like I want to retire, I’m too young and still have a lot left, but I have no desire to fight. And I have no interest in going to another organization. I won’t leave the biggest league to fight in a small one. I’m a big team and I want to be at the biggest league. If I’m not in the UFC, I’m not fighting anywhere else.”

“If they release me, that would be great, but if not, what can we do? I have other projects and that depends on this meeting we’re having with them,” he continued. “If I want to retire, no contract can stop me. I can go there and say (I’m retired) and they can’t force me to fight. A lawyer already looked at the contract, but I don’t want to fight (the UFC in court). I don’t want anything.

“Ah, you want me to fight MMA again? So I’ll get in there and tap right away, and the fight is over. I’d do it quickly. What I really want is other things for my life.”

It’s almost surreal to here Aldo, a man who not too long ago was the only fighter in the history of the promotion to ever wear 145-pound gold, make these comments, but he has nonetheless.

What do you expect to come out of this situation?

Superstar UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is off chasing a rivalry with lightweight Nate Diaz at welterweight of all places, so the division’s next best contenders in longtime former champion Jose Aldo and former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar fought for the interim title and the next perceived shot at “The Notorious” on the main card of last night’s (Sat., July 9, 2016) UFC 200 pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The bout turned out a bit like their first meeting, with Edgar pushing the pace and keeping the activity level high while Aldo patiently picked his power shots. Those bigger punches, kicks, and knees began to find a home on “The Answer’s” bloodied right eye, and none of his takedowns were successful throughout the full five-round bout.

Aldo took home another decision win over Edgar, and should now move on to his desired rematch with McGregor. Watch the full fight video highlights of his interim title win over Edgar right here:

The anticipation and hype for this weekend’s (Sat., July 9, 2016) UFC 200 pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, is about to reach an all-time high, and that was only furthered by today’s UFC 200 press conference featuring the main stars of arguably the greatest card in MMA history.

Our friends at Submission Radio were on hand to catch the post-conference staredowns. First, hulking beast Brock Lesnar faced off with iron-chinned and concrete-fisted power puncher Mark Hunt heading into their co-main event bout:

Then, light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier faced off against archrival and interim champ Jon Jones for what seems like the millionth time, and not surprisingly, things got heated again:

Finally, UFC women’s bantamweight champion faced off with top challenger Amanda Nunes:

With only a few short days remaining until this weekend’s (Sat., July 9, 2016) UFC 200 pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, the UFC rolls on with third episode of its Embedded V-log series for the blockbuster event.

To kick things off, heavyweight fan favorite slugger Mark Hunt reveals his gameplan for the returning Brock Lesnar, which not surprisingly involves punching “The Beast” in the face. Even “The Super Samoan” admits it’s the simplest gameplan ever as he dives into a pre-fight feast on the grill.

Back in Las Vegas, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate goes to see her hypnotherapist to get her mind right for her upcoming title bout against top contender Amanda Nunes. Light heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier finalizes his training at his home base of American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) before cheating on his weight cut just a little at home.

Meanwhile, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Cormier’s arch rival Jon Jones takes an Uber (finally) to a swimming pool and his strength gym on July 4 as part of his last training sessions for his pivotal 205-pound title match-up with “DC.” Interim featherweight title contender Frankie Edgar does the same on the beach in New Jersey.

Finally, returning beast Brock Lesnar tries on his fight gloves to meet Mark Hunt, with the XXXXL not fitting the WWE superstar’s hands. Lesnar then does some interviews and signs fight posters for UFC 200 while discussing his desire to return to the Octagon. Ever the outspoken joker, Lesnar offers Tate an opportunity to spoon with him as space is tight in the signing room.

Frankie Edgar: We’re Going To Find Out If Jose Aldo Still Wants To Fight

Five days before his interim UFC featherweight title rematch with former champion Jose Aldo at this weekend’s (Sat., July 9, 2016) UFC 200 pay-per-view (PPV) from Las Vegas, Frankie Edgar believes he and “Scarface” are at exact opposite spots in their careers compared to when they first met back at February 2013’s UFC 156.

That pivotal fight was “The Answer’s” first bout at 145 pounds after he had dropped two very thin decisions to former champion Benson Henderson at lightweight. When Aldo beat him with yet another close call to send Edgar on a three-fight losing streak in title bouts, the New Jersey native knew he had changes to make in order to rebound from the brutal downswing.

Edgar did so, and the results are his current five-fight win streak that includes finishes of top contenders Chad Mendes and Cub Swanson, in addition to wins over two legends in BJ Penn and Urijah Faber. With his career completely rejuvenated, he discussed what’s now different in an interview with FOX Sports, focusing on the boosted confidence that was lacking before his first fight with Aldo:

“When we fought the last time, I was coming off a two-fight skid at lightweight and when you have two close fights, you start to second-guess yourself a little bit.

“It’s that inner fight with yourself. I always believed in myself, I always prepared the right ways. Even after that Benson Henderson fight before the Aldo fight, I did everything the right way, it’s just that inner battle. You lose close fights and you start second-guessing those little things that you normally wouldn’t. I had to forget about that.”

As for any doubt about himself, Edgar reassured that he’s over that, and a big part of it was making sure he wasn’t in such close fights. His newfound killer instinct is noticeable, and it’s lent to him being a more complete and dangerous fighter overall:

“I think I’ve gotten past that,” Edgar said. “I’ve made the adjustments so I’m not in these close fights. You can arguably say I haven’t lost a round since the Aldo fight. I’m putting guys away now. I’m just a much more improved fighter.

“Confidence is everything. You go in there and believe in yourself and you can’t be stopped. I feel like you’ve got to be good to be confident first and I know I’m good enough to have the confidence that I have. Now that I believe in it, it’s just going to make everything that much better. I think I’m going to come out there in the first round guns blazing.”

Aldo McGregor 1

Edgar believes Aldo is in quite the opposite spot, however, as he stated his shocking 13-second loss to Conor McGregor in his last fight has to be messing with his head due to the ‘Notorious” brash trash talk and style of rubbing it in:

“It has to mess with you. Close losses mess with you, never mind getting knocked out with one punch. Especially to a guy like Conor, who is going to relish in it the way he does and talk about it the way he does, no one’s better than him with that. I don’t want to say it was embarrassing because it can happen to anybody, but for Aldo, I think it was a little embarrassing. To be on top for so long and then have it happen like that to that guy. That’s definitely got to mess with him.”

Because of that defeat, Edgar has serious doubts if Aldo will able to resume his world-beating form that saw him reign over the UFC featherweight division with impunity since its inception in 2011. He said that’s something we won’t know until they set foot in the cage, but Edgar does believe when he absorbs a few shots from the new and improved “Answer,” he might be questioning himself:

“Maybe he’ll bounce back and be more motivated, but he himself won’t know until we step in there,” Edgar said.

“It’s really going to come down to that night. I think if he’s looking to quit right now, those first couple of punches we’re really going to find out if he wants to step and say he’s still a fighter and he still wants this,” Edgar said. “A lot of people that get knocked out like that do lose that fight.

“I do think if I hit him with some good stuff early on, he’s going to really be questioning himself. Not only is he going to question himself from his last fight, but he’s going to question himself in the first couple of minutes of our fight.”

Finally, Edgar offered up his perfect prediction for the fight, and not surprisingly, it ended with him being declared the winner without the judges’ scorecards being the determining factor:

“I get it done within three. Hand raised. I walk home with that belt.”

Despite a largely stacked card overall, tomorrow night’s (Sat., May 14, 2016) UFC 198 from the Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, Brazil, took a huge hit when longtime former middleweight champion Anderson Silva was unfortunately removed from his main card bout against Uriah Hall due to an enlarged gall bladder that required surgery.

“The Spider” soon had successful surgery, and now he’s already eying a return at July 9’s historical UFC 200 event from the all-new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Silva’s trainer Rogerio Camoes described the all-time great’s plan moving forward in an interview with Sherdog:

“Thank God everything went fine and Anderson is already planning his return. He told me, ‘Master, pack everything up. We’re going to UFC 200.’ The most important thing is that he kept his mind strong and didn’t lose his motivation. On the contrary, he’s really motivated to take part at that historical UFC 200 event.”

The legendary champion has endured some tough injuries since losing the belt to Chris Weidman in 2013, but it appears that the gall bladder issue is one that he’ll be able to bounce back from in a small amount of time.

That’s good news for “The Spider” and his fans, as there’s undoubtedly a bad taste still left in their mouths after his controversial decision loss to Michael Bisping in London this February, where Silva battered and brutalized “The Count” in rounds three and five while showing precious little offense in the other three frames.

A re-booking of his match-up with fellow flashy striker Hall would add even more fireworks to a UFC 200 card that already features three title fights in Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones, Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar, and Miesha Tate vs. Amanda Nunes. In truth, any fight featuring Silva and his still-lethal striking arsenal at 41 years of age would certainly be another huge upgrade to a card that is already one of the most stacked in UFC history on paper.

And Silva is an icon of MMA, one that would be the perfect crowning jewel on a midsummer masterpiece the UFC has crafted despite all the backlash from the booking of and subsequent removal of the original Nate Diaz vs. Conor McGregor main event. Who would you like to see “The Spider” face off with at UFC 200?
