Almost 25 years since the birth of the UFC, it’s with a heavy heart that we look back in disbelief at just how many fighters who once set foot in the Octagon, so vibrant and full of life, are sadly no longer with us.

In this article, we’ll recall the harrowing circumstances surrounding the death of 10 stars who had fought on the sport’s biggest stage, and whose passing shocked the MMA community to its very core.

Tim Hague

Former UFC heavyweight fighter Tim Hague’s premature passing at the age of 34 last year due to injuries sustained in the boxing ring was a painful reminder of just how dangerous combat sports can be.

Hague had compiled a 1-4 run during in the UFC between 2009-2011 and then moved on to successfully compete for other promotions like WSOF and King of the Cage in the years that followed.

Between 2015 and 2016 his form started to take a dramatic dip though, losing three fights in a row by way of knockout, then a 33-second TKO loss just a few months later in July.

That would prove to be Hague’s last ever MMA fight, but unfortunately, he didn’t hang up his gloves, turning to professional boxing instead.

He’d fight to a unanimous decision loss in the boxing ring that September, then suffered a first-round TKO loss in December. Undeterred, he then took an MMA-boxing hybrid fight billed as ‘superboxing’ in April of 2017 and was TKO’d in 40 seconds.

After that punishing succession of concussive defeats over a relatively short period, Hague should not have been licensed by the Edmonton Combative Sporting Commission to undertake another boxing bout just three months later against Adam Braidwood, an independent report would later conclude.

However, Hague was allowed to fight and quickly found himself outmatched by Braidwood, leading to him being floored no less than three times in the opening round.

The fight wasn’t stopped and so Hague continued to endure a one-sided beating in the second round that saw him dropped once more before finally being brutally KO’d.

Hague regained consciousness afterward and made his way out of the ring helped by his corner, but backstage he began complaining of a severe headache and was vomiting, leading to him being rushed to the hospital.

Two days later Hague was declared dead due to a traumatic brain injury.  Combat sports in Edmonton were subsequently banned for a year as a result of his tragic death.

As 2016 rapidly draws to a conclusion and we take stock of the year gone by, one trend that casts a long shadow is the alarming number of past and present MMA fighters who’ve died over the past 12 months.

Unfortunately the sport of mixed martial arts is still too young for this to simply be a case of stars passing away due to old age. In fact, with the age of the 10 fighters listed here ranging from just 25-49 years old, we are left having to come to terms with the fact that these were 10 lives that were simply taken far too soon.

A knee-jerk reaction would be to assume that these deaths occurred due to injuries they sustained in the cage, but the truth is that only one of the ten passed away in that manner – although we can surely all agree that’s one too many.

As you’ll read in the pages to follow however, the reasons for the others deaths are just as hard to accept, from sudden medical emergencies to apparent suicide, from freak accidents to cold-blooded murder.

Josh Samman, 28 years old, passed away on October 5th after being in a coma for about five days. Samma’s official cause of death has been ruled a probable drug overdose by the Broward County chief medical examiner Craig Mallak.

Mallak told TMZ on Tuesday that even though there was no toxicology report done on Samman, circumstances have led him to believe that he died from a probable drug overdose.

Samman was found with his roommate, Troy Kirkingburg, by authorities, who discovered the scene on September 29th at an apartment in Hollywood, Florida. Kirkingburg was deceased, and Samman was unresponsive, but was breathing and had a pulse.

No toxicology report could be performed on Samman because he was in the hospital days before passing away and there was no specimen to test. Kirkingburg was tested, and the results for his toxicology report showed the presence of heroin, cocaine, and ethanol. Because Samman was found with Kirkingburg, the medical examiner has ruled that his death was due to a probable drug overdose.

Samman made his UFC debut on the reality show “The Ultimate Fighter” in season 17, which saw interim light heavyweight champion Jon Jones coach Samman. Samman held a 3-2 record in the UFC.

The MMA world has received some incredibly sad and disheartening news this morning when word arrived that UFC middleweight Josh Samman has reportedly passed after spending five days in a coma in Southern Florida.

The sad news was confirmed by the Tallahassee Democrat today.

Samman’s The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 17 castmate and friend Gilbert Smith posted the following tribute on his Instagram account with the sad news earlier today:

Samman had spent the last five days in a coma after being found unresponsive Friday morning in Tallahassee, Florida. His roommate and friend, MMA announcer Troy Kirkinburg, was pronounced dead on arrival.

The social media world was quick to state heroin was the cause of both men’s deaths, but Samman’s mother clarified the speculation by revealing that no heroin had been found in her son’s system.

According to the Democrat, no foul play was suspected in a report from the HPD, who stated:

“Detectives are investigating. No more information is available at this time.”

Samman was a unique personality in MMA who had been through an extraordinary amount of hardship in his life, including the loss of his girlfriend in a car accident in 2013 and multiple serious injuries that put his MMA career on hold on more than one occasion.

He picked up 2014’s “Knockout of the Year” with a picturesque head kick win over Eddie Gordon at 2014’s UFC 181 and followed it up with a submission win over Caio Magalhaes, but he had dropped his two most recent MMA bouts to Tim Boetsch and Tamdan McCrory.

Our hearts go out to Samman’s family and friends in this trying time.

Unforntalty, Kirkingburg was pronounced dead on arrival. MMA Fighting is reporting that the UFC has been made aware of Samman’s condition, which is that he is still alive but is fighting for his life while still in critical condition.

Christopher Rothstein, who is a local MMA reporter and ring announcer, issued this statement from Samman’s mother via FOX Sports:

“Josh is still in a coma, and more tests are being done. That is the latest update on my son’s condition,” Samman’s mother said in the statement. “And in spite of speculation, there was no heroin found in Josh’s system whatsoever. No matter what people are posting on social media.

“The reason I am making this statement is, because Josh touched so many lives, and loved inspiring others, especially young people. I don’t want them to lose faith in him, and whatever he brought out in them, because of the lies. He would want them to “never give up.”

Kirkingburg’s fiancee Charlene Cristobal also issued a statement:

“I am extremely heartbroken over the loss of the man who will always be the love of my life,” Cristobal said. “I thank everyone for their support, but ask for privacy for his family and me as we mourn our loss.”

Samman made his UFC debut on the reality show “The Ultimate Fighter” in season 17, which saw interim light heavyweight champion Jon Jones coach Samman. Samman currently holds a 3-2 record in the UFC.
