It’s the heavyweight bout you thought you’d never see, but it’s finally going down!

Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos returns after a three-round war against Roy “Big Country” Nelson, and he has his sights set on Cain Velasquez and the UFC heavyweight title around the waist of the AKA behemoth.

Months ago, Brock Lesnar was thought to be the man in Junior’s way of facing Velasquez, but a second bout with diverticulitis has forced Lesnar out, bumping Shane Carwin back into the driver’s seat and back in line for a crack at the belt…

…that is unless Dos Santos will have anything to say about it.

Co-headlining this monumental card from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada is a featherweight bout between fast-rising Black House phenom Diego Nunes and now-our-division veteran of the Octagon and TUF 1 alumnus Kenny Florian in a bout that has the potential to be one of the greatest MMA showcases of all time.

It’s all right here, it’s UFC 131, and as always, the Bleacher Report family syndicate has your back on the latest coverage, news, and up-to-the-date analysis of what could be the best fight card of this summer!

UFC 131 Weigh-In Results: All 24 Fighters Competing at UFC 131 Make Weight

Bleacher Report’s Danny Acosta reports:

All 24 fighters expected at The Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada for UFC 131 have hit their contracted weights for Saturday’s Octagon action. Here are five things to watch for come fight night—one for every finger in the fist.

1) Can Junior dos Santos maintain No. 1 contender status versus a trimmed-down Shane Carwin?

Junior dos Santos likes to stay busy. It’s why he accepted a fight after being granted a title shot while UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez healed an injured shoulder. He’ll need to stay busy to neutralize the power of Grudge Training Center product and former interim champion Shane Carwin, who returns from an 11-month layoff as an injury replacement for the last man to defeat him, former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar

Of their combined 11 Octagon appearances, the judges have only been called upon once—these heavyweights are power-punching finishers.

Stay tuned to Bleacher Report for all things UFC 131, including the latest UFC 131 Results, Fight Card AnalysisUFC 131 News, and Live Reaction, from Vancouver.

The once-beaten Brazilian aims to keep his title shot with his active and accurate hard-hitting boxing style. Carwin, weighing 254 pounds to dos Santos’ 239, is 25 pounds lighter and eager to subvert dos Santos’ aspirations for gold with his boxer-wrestler base.

The winner meets Velasquez in “four to five months” UFC President Dana White revealed at Wednesday’s pre-fight press conference. Dos Santos holding his place in the bid to challenge Velasquez first would create a title fight between two fighters undefeated in the Octagon and on seven-fight win streaks. It’s an excellent fight, so Shane Carwin’s performance must leave no doubt he’s the better option.

Dos Santos’ speed and cage time—roughly 30-minutes to Carwin’s eight—should be the definitive factor against a hungry opponent. The power Shane Carwin wields in his XXXXXL fists can never be counted out though, especially if they are infused with cardio that can stand up to “Cigano” body punches for 15 minutes.

UFC 131: Will Shane Carwin vs. Junior Dos Santos End in Spectacular Fashion?

Ah, the heavyweight fight: the staple in American combat sports since the days of Ingemar Johansson, Jersey Joe Walcott and Rocky Marciano.

It used to be that the fight primarily caused debate over which punch was going to finish the bout, but in Mixed Martial Arts, it’s not as cut and dry because MMA isn’t just punching people…unless you are referring to Junior Dos Santos and Shane Carwin, who face off in Vancouver as part of UFC 131 tomorrow night.

Both guys love to stand and trade, neither man has a fear of standing in the pocket and trading blow after blow, and this is why both men are considered among the elite in the 265 lb. division of the UFC.

Only one issue has sparked the debate of whether this fight will see a spectacular finish, and that’s Carwin’s wrestling, which was used last against Brock Lesnar at UFC 116 last July.

However, that one time is really the only time he’s ever used it in a fight, and really speaking, he’s always done well enough with his hands that there was no real need to get the fight to the ground. by a takedown.

As a matter of fact, if Carwin did use it for the majority of the fight, I’d be surprised, considering how keen he’s been in the past to let his hands go.

If the question surrounds whether we will see a spectacular finish or not, count me as one of the ones that not only thinks we will see a spectacular finish, but I predict that the victor will produce a “Knockout Of The Year” contender as Carwin and Dos Santos both have enough power in their hands to light an entire continent up.

Both guys are capable of such a thing, and the best part is that when they strike, they can be very unpredictable.

In other words, Junior, it’s not too late to show off that Showtime Kick you’ve been working on…

UFC 131 Fight Card Features Kenny Florian Moving Down To Featherweight, Is A Title Shot In His Future?

Kenny Florian makes his featherweight debut at UFC 131 against Diego Nunes. He has been a successful lightweight for years, but this move provides his best chance to get into title contention. In fact, one win could very well set him up for a fight with Jose Aldo later on this year.

From Sherdog.com:

“I think if you look at what I’ve done at 155 and what I’ve done in my career, bringing the skills and the experience that I have … beating a guy in the top five in the world, yeah, I think that puts me in line for a shot right away,” Florian said recently during an interview on the Sherdog Radio Network’s “Beatdown” show. “Who knows? We’ll see. I think it definitely does.”

Florian has an advantage that a lot of fighters don’t have. Since he has been fighting for UFC for years, the organization is familiar with him as a fighter. This means that he won’t have to work as hard to impress the management in order to vault up to championship contender.

The lightweight division is so crowded with contenders right now that this move is the smartest thing that Florian could do. He is 35, which means he doesn’t have a lot of time left to compete at a high level.

If Florian is fortunate enough to come away from UFC 131, and he could thanks to terrific submission skills, he will be in the mix with Chad Mendes for a championship fight.

Given all that he has accomplished as a lightweight, there is no reason to think that he can’t win the featherweight championship if the opportunity should arise in the near future.
