Justin Gaethje has explained how a fight between him and former dual weight UFC champion Conor McGregor would go down. The Irishman has been calling for a shot at Gaethje ever the American beat Tony Ferguson at UFC 249.

Despite McGregor’s calls for a fight with Gaethje it appears ‘The Highlight’ will face off against Khabib Nurmagomedov next. UFC boss Dana White has advised his biggest star to wait for the winner but he has since announced his retirement from the sport due to a lack of fight options.

Gaethje took time out to praise McGregor while speaking with ESPN. ‘The Highlight’ says ‘Notorious’ has done great things in MMA and he is looking forward to fighting him down the line, he said.

“I think he should wait for the winner of me and Khabib. If I win, I think he definitely comes back. If Khabib wins, I don’t know. I’m not sure about that. (Conor’s) a legend, man. What he did was legendary status. I’ll never take that away from him. He deserves credit. He’s accomplished so much in this sport. What every fighter wants to attain, he accomplished, so hats off to him. I can’t wait to punch him in the face.”

The UFC interim lightweight champion went on the break down a potential fight between him and McGregor. Gaethje sees it as a game of distance which he would win with his patented leg kicks before ultimately knocking out the Irishman, he explained.

“Distance control is the No. 1 factor in any fight. It’s established in the first 30 seconds. It’s not visible, but it’s established, and that would be a huge factor in our fight. Who can control the distance? I think the best thing about me is I can kick the (expletive) out of people, so when they are trying to control distance or maybe they are winning at that, I can kick them in the leg and try to reset that. So I think I would knock him out to be honest. I think he’s got about three rounds, and then it’s hell, and he doesn’t want to go to hell, so I think he’s good for now.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Nurmagomedov Bigs Up Gaethje

It appears increasingly likely that Khabib Nurmagomedov will be competing soon.

Nurmagomedov is expected to face current interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje in a title unification fight later this year. However, many observers were skeptical of him competing as they felt it depended on how things progressed with his father who is currently hospitalized in Moscow, Russia.

For now, at least, it looks like Nurmagomedov does plan on facing Gaethje in the near future. He hyped up “The Highlight” with a recent Instagram video post showing Gaethje’s best moments inside the Octagon.

“My next opponent,” Nurmagomedov wrote in the caption.

It follows Nurmagomedov’s manager Ali Abdelaziz recently claiming that “The Eagle” was using his father’s condition as motivation during his recent training sessions.

“I think Khabib’s father being sick has motivated him more,” Abdelaziz said. “He’s training every day, two times a day. He’s in camp already. Me and him were talking and I said, ‘Hey, get your mind off, do what you need to do.’ He’s always training. He’s a true mixed martial artist. Same with Gaethje. They are both great guys and they want to fight. It’s a dream fight.”

As for when a fight can happen, recent reports stated September 19 as a potential date with the title unification bout headlining UFC 253. Hopefully, that ends up being the case.

Do you think we’ll see Nurmagomedov vs. Gaethje soon?

Nurmagomedov To Unify Titles In September

It looks like we will be seeing a lightweight title unification fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje in September.

According to Brazilian publication Combate, that fight is in the works for UFC 253 which will be taking place on September 19. No location or venue has been specified as of yet.

However, it’s likely to take place at either the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas or Fight Island in Abu Dhabi, with Nurmagomedov notably competing in the latter in his last title defense against Dustin Poirier back in September.

Nurmagomedov submitted Poirier via third-round submission on that occasion and was expected to defend his title against Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 in April. However, circumstances amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic led to “The Eagle” pulling out with Gaethje stepping in to face Ferguson for the interim title in the rescheduled event last month.

“The Highlight” put on the performance of his life en route to a fifth-round TKO win to become the new interim lightweight champion. He will now look to do what no other man has done and that’s inflict defeat on Nurmagomedov.

Where do you think UFC 253 will take place? And how do you see a potential title unification fight going?
