With rumblings suggesting current BMF championship holder, Jorge Masvidal is set to earn an immediate rematch with Kamaru Usman for the undisputed welterweight championship in his next matchup — the Floridian is currently targeting a return to the Octagon in August or September.

Dropping a unanimous decision shutout loss to incumbent 170-pound champion, Usman at UFC 251 on ‘Fight Island’ last July — Masvidal was the subject of a somewhat surprising callout from Usman following his successful title knockback against former Sanford MMA teammate, Gilbert Burns at UFC 258 in February.

Masvidal replaced Burns on just six day’s notice back in July of last year, and Usman has now claimed that if he clashed with the American Top Team veteran again — he would put him in a “coffin“, and how he wants to leave Masvidal no excuses this time around.

Masvidal, who attended Canelo Alvarez’s knockout win over Avni Yildirim last night in the ‘Sunshine State’ — claimed that he was fighting for the “belt” in September.

Right now, I’m focusing on me,” Masvidal said during an interview with Boxing Social. “(I’m) fighting for the belt, which is gonna be in August or September — September, we just got word of it.

Masvidal also spoke with IFLTV reporter, Andrew McCart — where he echoed claims that he’ll be back in action in August or September, but failed to elaborate on a potential opponent.

August, (or) September, somebody is getting baptised in my realm, that’s what I’m worried about,” Masvidal said. “And the people are going to like it when they find out who it is.” (H/T Chisanga Malata)

Whilst Usman has presented himself as a potential opponent for Masvidal, the longtime contender has constantly been linked with a grudge-match against former American Top Team teammate, Colby Covington which has so far yet to materialise.

The 36-year-old Miami native’s last professional victory came at UFC 244 in November of 2019 where he was crowned the symbolic BMF champion via a third round doctors’ stoppage win over Nate Diaz at a Madison Square Garden main event.

UFC welterweight contender Stephen Thompson is not a fan of people who are comparing current 170lb king Kamaru Usman to one the greatest fighters of all time in Georges St-Pierre.

Usman spectacularly defended his welterweight strap for the third time against his former teammate, Gilbert Burns, at UFC 258 earlier this month.

‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ was dropped early but recovered well to beat up his opponent in round two and ultimately finish the fight in the third frame.

With this win, Usman continued his perfect record in the UFC. He has won 13 straight fights since joining the promotion and established a new welterweight record in the process – GSP previously held the record with 12 consecutive wins.

The record-breaking exploits of Usman have got MMA fans and pundits talking.

A section are now putting the Nigerian alongside or even above St-Pierre as the best 170lb fighter ever.

Thompson is not one of them and he made that much clear in a recent interview with Submission Radio.

“He is the best at the moment. And people are talking about him being up there with Georges St-Pierre, and I’m like, hold on, put the brakes on for a second,” Thompson said. “Like, you’ve defended it three times, and George St-Pierre I think was like nine or ten or twelve or something like that, he’s defended the title. I’m not really sure, but it was up there. And you’re not quite there yet. Yeah, he’s on the way, but he’s not quite there. That’s just in my eyes.”

‘Wonderboy’ is adamant Usman will have to face him at some point and sent a message to the champion, he said.

“Just let him know that I’m right behind him. To watch out for me. And he even said himself that one of the hardest guys in the division to prepare for is me. I’m gonna give him the hardest fight. But I’m getting better everyday too. Not just with my striking, but with my wrestling, my Jiu Jitsu, and wherever the fight goes I’m gonna be ready for it. And if we fought each other, I’m gonna be the one with my hands raised. So, let’s go, baby!”

Do you agree with Stephen Thompson? Are comparisons between Kamaru Usman and Georges St-Pierre premature?

Stephen Thompson Calls To Face Kamaru Usman: ‘Fight Somebody You Haven’t Fought Yet’

Thompson Usman

Stephen Thompson is continuing to campaign for a welterweight title shot against current champion Kamaru Usman.

Following Usman’s win over Gilbert Burns at UFC 258 earlier this month, Thompson took to social media to express his desire to face the champion next.

However, Usman would call out Jorge Masvidal for a rematch during his post-fight interview.

Thompson can understand why Usman did that — especially given Masvidal is a big draw for the promotion now — but when it comes to a sporting perspective, it makes no sense according to the former title challenger.

“For one, his last fight was [against] you, so it just doesn’t make sense to fight him again,” Thompson told MMA Fighting. “He clearly lost. I know it was short notice, but I just think that Kamaru Usman knows. It’s smart for him, he knows he can beat him for a high pay, it’s a big name, there is beef there so it makes sense on his part. As a fan and as a fighter, and as someone who has been at the top of the game and trying to get title fights, it doesn’t make sense for that to happen.

“Fight somebody you haven’t fought yet. You beat pretty much everybody except me in the top-five. That’s it. Of course, you’ve got Michael Chiesa who is No. 6, he hasn’t fought Michael Chiesa either. But keep on going down the line. You beat everyone up here, who’s next? It’s this guy.

“C’mon Usman! C’mon, man. Fight somebody you haven’t fought yet.”

Thompson certainly warrants a shot at the title again.

He last competed for the strap in 2017 but would suffer a majority decision defeat to Tyron Woodley. “Wonderboy” underwent some setbacks since but is currently on a two-fight winning streak following impressive victories over Vicente Luque and Geoff Neal.

And should he get a shot at Usman — in what he calls a “fun fight” — winning welterweight gold would mean more to him today than if he did it a couple of years ago against Woodley.

“It would mean more than anything, and I don’t mean just for me,” Thompson added. “[It would be for] everybody that helped get me here; my coaches, especially my dad. My dad has been with me since day one and he talks about that title every day, as if he’s the one fighting for it. I think, in some ways, he’s trying to live through me a little bit. He knows the drive, he knows the hard work, the sacrifices I’ve made to get to where I’m at and he made those as well.

“To win that fight, for me, for him, would mean the world. Going through the injuries, the adversity, working my way back up from the last fight with Woodley, going down to No. 9, it’s been hard work, a long road for sure. Winning it this year, getting that title belt would mean the world to me. It would be amazing.”

Do you think Thompson deserves the next shot?
