Gilbert Burns has spoken about the many advantages he holds over the UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and expressed his belief that they will allow him to finish ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ when they finally face off. Burns was supposed to challenge Usman for the 170lb strap at UFC 251 in July. Unfortunately, the Brazilian submission specialist tested positive for the coronavirus a week out from fight night and was forced to withdraw. Jorge Masvidal stepped in on late notice but was dominated for five rounds by Usman who easily retained his title. UFC president Dana White has since told media Burns will be getting the next welterweight title shot.

The 34-year-old title challenger discussed the advantages he holds over Usman and any other welterweight during an interview with Helen Yee, he said.

“I see a lot of advantages. For sure my jiu jitsu. Any wrestlers in this division, Colby Covington, try taking me down. Just try it. I’ll be more than happy to not make it easy for guys to take me down. I might defend the shot or even take you guys down. As soon as I get on top, or even on bottom, I’m able to submit or even sweep or do whatever with any one of these guys in the division.”

“Not only for the champion, but for anyone, I’m a threat on my feet too,” Burns said. “I can kick, I can punch. I hit way harder than these guys. I have all the explosiveness. I’m fresh in the division. I don’t know how I didn’t make that change [from lightweight to welterweight] before, but right now I feel so good for that division.”

Burns went on to predict he would finish Usman and he says it could come via submission or knockout.

“I see a finish,” Burns told Yee. “I don’t know how. I know I can submit him. I know I can knock him out. I’m just going to work super hard to make sure I’m in the best shape of my life. We’re already planning.”

“I have so much energy right now that I see finish,” he added. “I’m going to be looking for the finish every single minute, every single second of that fight. That’s what I’m looking for.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Khamzat Chimaev

Khamzat Chimaev has taken us all by storm over the last two weeks, winning, and finishing two fights in just ten days, setting a UFC record. Now he wants to fight again at UFC 252 on August 15, and UFC President Dana White isn’t opposed to it, he’s already his biggest fan.

White caught up with Brett Okamoto yesterday on ESPN MMA to discuss his thoughts on Chimaev. Okamoto asked White after it was all said and done who had the standout performance at UFC Fight Island. White immediately responded:

“Khamzat! I mean, the guy is so dominant, so confident, (he) wants to continue to fight every weekend. I love it, I love guys with that mentality. I love how talented this guy is. You know, we threw the hottest prospect out of the UK at him, and that kid is a badass, legit, great fighter. And he made it look like he didn’t belong there.”

Okamoto then asked him if he had any interactions himself with Chimaev on Fight Island:

“Yeah yeah, I mean, he said he wanted to fight, and I said done. I’ll make it happen. He wants to fight now again in August, and I’m gonna get him what he wants.” Okamoto then asked him if he was going to get him a fight in August, White replied, “hell yes I am.”

White went on to speak on what could be next for Chimaev:

“That’s what we’re trying to figure out. We were sitting in here this morning trying to figure out what we think is next. You know, you ask this kid, he’s ready to fight Usman, you know what I mean?” Okamoto added, “I’m kind of ready to see it”, White continued, “is he ready for Usman? The way he looks, who knows, maybe.

In his two UFC fights, Chimaev has out-landed his opponents 192-2, and scored three takedowns, one for each round he started. He wants to be champion of the welterweight and middleweight divisions as well, and thinks it’ll take one or two years to challenge for his first one. There have been many comparisons between himself and UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, and honestly, he’s more dominant at 8-0 than Nurmagomedov was at 20-0. Forget the sky, there really is no limit for this kids potential.

What do you think should be next for Khamzat Chimaev?

Tyron Woodley On Why Gilbert Burns Is A Problem For Kamaru Usman

Tyron Woodley

Former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley has been looking ahead to the next 170lb title fight which will likely see Kamaru Usman defend his belt against Gilbert Burns.

Woodley lost the welterweight belt to Usman back at UFC 235. ‘The Chosen One’ looked flat as he was dominated by Usman throughout the 25-minute fight. One year later he returned to action against Burns and again got dominated for five rounds before dropping another decision and a second consecutive defeat.

Burns was supposed to face off against ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ at UFC 251. Unfortunately for the Brazilian, that fight was scrapped because he tested posted for COVID-19. Jorge Masvidal stepped in on one weeks’ notice but struggled to keep ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ at bay. Usman picked up a unanimous decision win to defend his title for the second time.

Speaking on the “UFC Unfiltered” podcast Woodley previewed the upcoming title fight and spoke about the various advantages Burns holds over Usman, he said.

“He has power. He has more power than Usman. He’s a better grappler than Usman, jiu-jitsu wise, but I think the striking – he may not be better, but he does punch a little bit harder, and it’s going to be a point where it has to go to the ground. We all just can be real: Gilbert’s gonna win that ground fight. Maybe not from his back, but if he finds a way on top or a position where he can take the back, it’s a problem.”

Woodley went on to praise Usman’s ability to adapt within a fight, he said.

“Usman’s above average everywhere, but he’s not excellent anywhere. But he’s a good implementer. He’s above average everywhere, but he’s not excellent anywhere, but he’s excellent at putting it together. He’s excellent at making adjustments within a fight.

“Whether you like watching him take Masvidal down or not, he never did one takedown against Colby, and Leon Edwards he struck and when it was time to takedown, he went for the takedown. So he’s very good at putting it together, and he’s going to have to do that against Burns.”

Kamaru Usman

Kamaru Usman recently went on TMZ after his second successful title defense, a unanimous decision victory over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 251. He was immediately asked, ‘if you had the choice, who would the dream fight be for The Nigerian Nightmare?’ Usman responded:

“Honestly, I would have to say Georges St-Pierre. Right now we’re tied for the record of most consecutive wins in the welterweight division (12), and Georges is a tough guy, Georges is a legend, Georges is a guy that’s been around for a while, has put his time in, and is considered one of the best. That’s where I aim to be. Georges can still do it, he proved it two years ago when he came back that he could still do it.

“And I feel that he’s still able to do it, I feel like he’s still able to come in and be that opponent to where people are unsure. Like, you know what, we don’t know if Usman’s got this one, and I think Georges St-Pierre can be that guy. That’s what I’m looking for, those are what champions are made of. When you get that feeling, (like) I’m not sure, this one’s a tough one, I don’t know how this one’s gonna go but I’m gonna damn well go out there and compete and see what happens. I think Georges St-Pierre can be that guy, and if Georges wants to do it, he can get it too if he wants to do it.”

He was then asked how a fight between the two of them would go, and had the following to say:

“I think Georges was one of the first of what I consider a hybrid of the sport, he can do everything well. And it worked for a long, long time, but I just think I’m the newer and improved version. I think I’m a bit stronger, I’m just a little bit better everywhere.”

A week later, TMZ also interviewed the greatest welterweight of all time, Georges St-Pierre. The interviewer showed him a video of their interview with Usman, and St-Pierre had the following to say about the matter:

“For me, it’s very complimentary because for a fighter the goal is to do as less (little) work possible to gain the most money. And they know a fight with me will give them a lot of money, and plus, if they win, they can have the legacy that comes with it. But, for my part, you know, it’s a mixed feeling. For sure sometimes I’m watching the fight and I’m like, man, I think I can beat these guys, or after I’m done training I feel like I’m very confident. But then after I go home at night and I’m thinking about all that crazy thoughts, I’m going to be 40-years-old soon.

“Do I really want to go back into a hardcore training camp of two months, put myself in jail so to speak and you know, getting ready for hell. And I’m like, no, I don’t. You know, I’ve done it for a very long time, and unfortunately in my sport there’s too many guys that retire too late, and I do not want to be one of these guys. I’m very fortunate, I’m healthy, most importantly, and I’m also wealthy. I came at the right time, the right timing, I made a lot of money. And I think when I matured and calculated the pros and cons, it’s better I stay retired.”

He went on to say he’s working on another big project, he remains a very big fan of the sport, and he loves to watch all the best guys in the sport, including Usman. He went on to pay Usman this incredible compliment following his win over Masvidal:

“I saw the fight, he’s amazing, what a great fight. He’s very, very smart. You know, everybody talks about his physical abilities and his skills, but I think his best attribute is his brain. He’s very, very smart, he’s very good at becoming the perfect nemesis for his opponent. He fought almost a perfect fight. I mean, he’s an amazing fighter and he’s gonna go far, he’s gonna be one of the best if he keeps going like that.”

He went on to say that while he isn’t certain he’ll never return, the probability is highly unlikely, stating “you can take the fighter out of the competition, but you can’t take the competition out of the fighter. But I need to stay objective and smart about my decisions and right now, to come back, to fight for the welterweight title against Kamaru Usman and risk it all, there’s more cons than pros. So it’s not worth it for me.”
