UFC lightweight Justin Gaethje believes “luck and chance” may have contributed to Leon Edwards’ comeback win over teammate Kamaru Usman at UFC 278.

Last August, Usman was on his way to successfully defending the UFC welterweight title until Edwards scored a head kick knockout in the final minute of the fight. It ended Usman’s three-year run as champion.

Justin Gaethje says Kamaru Usman is a Better Fighter Than Leon Edwards

During an interview with The Schmo, “The Highlight” spoke about his thoughts on Edwards’ last-minute win over Usman. He described Usman’s work ethic and his confidence heading into his third fight against Edwards.

I mean, he (Usman) whooped his (Edwards’) ass for 23 minutes and 45 seconds. So, he’s the better athlete, he’s the better fighter,” Gaethje said. “Nobody works harder than him. Again, luck and chance are slight factors every time we step in there, but you’ve just gotta trust in the preparation. I guarantee that he will be confident in his preparation.” (h/t MMA News)

Gaethje (23-4) and Usman (20-2) will both be competing on March 18 at UFC 286 at the O2 Arena in London, England. Usman will attempt to regain the UFC welterweight title when he faces Edwards in their trilogy fight. Gaetje will return to the octagon for the first time since UFC 274. He will go head-to-head with No.6 lightweight Rafael Fiziev.

Reigning UFC welterweight champion, Leon Edwards weighs in on Darren Till’s unfortunate run of form.

Till, 30, has not had his hand raised since his decision win over Kelvin Gastelum in November of 2019. Prior to that win, you’d also have to go back a bit – 18 months, in fact, to find Till’s previous win which at the time was meant to be his coming out party. The Liverpudlian would defeat the then-ranked #1 welterweight contender, Stephen Thompson.

Till was once considered the best prospect out of the U.K., but now fresh off another loss, this time at the hands of Dricus Du Plessis, it seems less and less likely that Till will reach the heights that many hoped.

Leon Edwards talks Darren Till

As part of his media duties, Edwards spoke about Till and his hope for the future. The pair could of realistically been matched up at one pint in time, but Edwards expressed genuine concern for Till’s fighting career.

For me, I just want to see Darren do well, you know?” Edwards said. “I feel like he’s a little bit loose with what he’s doing and where he’s going… For me, I just want him to somehow find his path. Whether it’s back in Liverpool where he started or somewhere else. I want him to get that confidence back in himself that he had in 2019 where he thought he was the best in the world.” (H/T BJPENN.com)

Edwards is set to make the first defence of his 170lb title in a trilogy bout against Kamaru Usman, in the main event of UFC 286 in London, England. ‘Rocky’ now finds himself as the figurehead of the newest generation of UK fighters, who are steadily making their way into the UFC rankings.

UFC welterweight, Jorge Masvidal send a message to Gilbert burns ahead of their April 8 clash.

UFC president Dana White recently announced the main and co-main events for UFC 287, declaring the rematch between Israel Adesanya and Alex Pereira had been made official for the headlining sport. As the for the chief support, Burns and Masvidal would finally be matched up after months of anticipation and proposed dates.

Recent form suggests that this fight will be one not to miss, as both men have shown willingness to exchange leather on the feet. Burns is fresh off an impressive one round blitz of perennial top-15 welterweight, Neil Magny, sinking an arm triangle in to secure the win.

Burns’ fight before that, against the undefeated Khamzat Chimaev saw Burns gained favour with the fans, going to war and troubling Chimaev, raising his stock even in a loss.

Masvidal does not seem concerned with the Burns’ recent showings, sending out a tongue-in-cheek to the Brazilian ahead of their scheduled contest.

My brother Gilbert,” Masvidal began. “Nothing but love and respect, I think you’re a great fighter but I’m gonna do you just like I did this meat, my brudda. You’re gonna get cooked, April 8th.”– Jorge Masvidal

Jorge Masvidal looks to return to winning ways

While ‘Gamebred’ remains one of the UFC’s more notable names, the 38-year-old has not one since November of 2019, when he beat Nate Diaz for the BMF title. Masvidal is 0-3 since then has, dropping loses to Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington. a win could see Masvidal thrown straight back into title contention, especially if Leon Edwards is still champion.

Does Jorge Masvidal get back into the win column?

Undisputed UFC welterweight champion, Leon Edwards remains supremely confident of retaining his division crown in March at UFC 286 against Kamaru Usman, claiming he sees no route in which the Auchi native comes to London and defeats him at The O2 Arena.

Edwards, who headlines UFC 286 on March 18. in a trilogy rubber match against Usman, managed to avenge a 2015 loss in August of last year, clinching the welterweight crown with a stunning, rallying fifth round high kick KO of Usman in Salt Lake City.

The Birmingham native had been linked with a slew of potential first title defense opponents following his win over Usman, with the Nigeria native dealing with a hand injury in the months following his first promotional loss.

Leon Edwards supremely confident ahead of UFC 286 title defense

However, now slated to headline UFC 286 on March 18. against the Trevor Wittman trainee, Edwards, who noted his undefeated record whilst fighting in London, maintained Usman would not be able to come to enemy territory and take the championship from him.

“To beat the pound-for-pound [number one] on your worst night, I think that’s one of my worst performances as far as career-wise goes in the UFC,” Leon Edwards said during a Q&A session. “To be able to still stay calm under that going into the fifth round and to get the KO. I think that shows character from me. That shows my mental I.Q. for the fight game, as far as knowing when to land that shot.”

“I think taking all that into the fight, it’s going to be a good night for me,” Leon Edwards continued. “I know he’s (Kamaru Usman) tough, I know he’s good – I’m not deluded. I know he’s a good fighter, but I truly believe that I’m better and I can’t see how he comes over and beats me in London.”

Edwards and Usman take main event honors at UFC 286, with a lightweight clash between former interim division titleholder, Justin Gaethje, and the surging, Rafael Fiziev slated to co-headline in London.
