Bobby Green

UFC referee Keith Peterson was not of fan of Bobby Green’s post-fight celebration.

Stepping into the main event spotlight at UFC Vegas 80, Green added another big win to his resume, scoring a stunning 33-second knockout against rising lightweight contender Grant Dawson. With the win, ‘King’ moved into the No. 13 spot in the rankings and is riding a massive wave of momentum as he hopes to make a quick turnaround and compete once more before 2023 comes to a close.

Following his highlight-reel-worthy win, Bobby Green celebrated by paying tribute to WWE legend Triple H, flexing his arms and spitting water into the air during Bruce Buffer’s official announcement. Unfortunately for Peterson, he got caught in the collateral damage and was clearly left less than thrilled.

Addressing Peterson’s reaction during an appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Bobby Green made it clear that he didn’t care, suggesting that the long-time UFC ref owed him one.

“I don’t care, Keith owes me. Me and Keith, when I saw him in the back and we ran into each other, he was like the bad luck charm supposedly. He was saying like ‘argh I know, I know you don’t want me here’ and I’m like bro, I don’t give a f*ck. You don’t really got sh*t to do in my fights, it’s just like stupid sh*t happens, I don’t give a f*ck. Just do your job, I don’t give a f*ck, do you bro I respect you. I just kept it cool with him.”

“It’s just stupid sh*t happens and we keep moving on. I don’t want you to think I hate you and I hope you don’t hate me” (h/t MMA News).

Keith Peterson Reversed Bobby Green’s First-Round KO Against Jared Gordon

In April, Keith Peterson was the assigned referee for a fight between Bobby Green and Jared Gordon. ‘King’ appeared to score himself a first-round knockout against Gordon, but the result was quickly overturned to a no-contest after instant replay revealed that the fight-ending sequence began with an accidental clash of heads.

Bobby Green was left fuming following the announcement and let his feelings fly during the post-fight press event.

“F*ck it, we’re going to let some feelings out today,” Green said. “F*ck this, f*ck this, and f*ck this. I get it, I get it, we f*cking clashed heads. I was trying to go for an elbow and he kind of dipped his head and we kind of clashed, but he was still f*cking moving. He was trying to put me into a f*cking triangle.

“I fought the triangle sh*t off and he was still moving fine. And that after, when I busted his ass, then he was f*cked up. He was still straight [before that]. And they want to try to slide me out of my money — that’s what I’m mad about. I need my money, bro. I need my money.”

Veteran referee Keith Peterson was on the receiving end of a punch at UFC Vegas 48.

Peterson was the man in the middle when Chas Skelly squared off against Mark Striegl on the undercard of Johnny Walker vs. Jamahal Hill.

In round two, Skelly worked his way to Striegl’s back and was hammering away with nasty ground strikes. Peterson moved in to stop the fight but while doing so was cracked by Skelly who was throwing bombs.

Keith Peterson Has History With Dominick Cruz

One man who was perhaps happy to see Peterson take a punch is Dominick Cruz, who was part of the commentary team at UFC Vegas 48.

Peterson, a quiet and unassuming character, is perhaps best known for finding himself in the firing line of Cruz in the aftermath of UFC 249.

The former bantamweight champion suffered a second-round TKO defeat at the hands of Henry Cejudo back in May 2020. However, post-fight Cruz went off on Peterson for what he believed was a premature stoppage. ‘The Dominator’ went as far as suggesting that Peterson was drunk on the job.

“That was an early stoppage, 100 percent – I’m positive of it,” Cruz said in the aftermath of his loss to Cejudo. “I wish there was a way to keep these refs a little more responsible sometimes. The guy smelled like alcohol and cigarettes, so who knows what he was doing. Definitely (he did). I wish they drug tested them.”

“I know Herb Dean is good. He’s one of the best refs. I immediately when I saw that ref I was like, ‘Man, is there a way to veto a ref and get a new one?’ I wonder that.”

Dominick Cruz, Marc Goddard

Former UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz cleared the air on his UFC 269 post-fight remarks that he was happy with referee Marc Goddard.

Cruz’s praise of Goddard was particularly notable after he blasted Keith Peterson following his loss to Henry Cejudo at UFC 249. He lost to Cejudo via TKO after Cruz suffered heavy blows on the ground and the feet, though he claimed he was still defending himself.

Cruz’s wishes for not having Peterson officiate his next fights were granted in recent wins over Casey Kenney and Pedro Munhoz. Following his win over Munhoz, Cruz praised Goddard for allowing him to continue fighting through an early barrage.

During a recent interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, Cruz denied that praising Goddard was in some way an indirect slight at Peterson.

“I gave kudos to Marc Goddard and the Las Vegas commission for the great job they did with the show,” Cruz said. “And I heard it in that moment in the interview. He said, ‘Well, look, you took a stab at Keith Peterson, I noticed, and you gave kudos to Marc Goddard.’ And I said, ‘Hold on one second. That’s exactly what happened with me and Cormier right there,’ is whatever got said you can twist it and hear your interpretation and write a headline that everyone’s gonna click.

“That’s the world we live in today,” Cruz continued. “But the truth is I never said (anything) about Keith Peterson. You did. And I gave kudos to Marc Goddard and that got turned into me talking bad about Keith Peterson? How does that happen?”

Dominick Cruz Has Never Been One To Hold Back His Opinions

Along with his successes in the Octagon, Cruz has turned into arguably one of the top UFC commentators in the promotion. He’s become a main fixture of many UFC Fight Night events, especially during the UFC’s time broadcasting events at the UFC Apex.

Cruz has also been in a bit of hot water with some fans and fellow athletes after he publically criticized Daniel Cormier’s commentary. He later went on to point out that he made the comments in the middle of weight cutting.

Cruz is now much closer to re-entering the bantamweight title picture after back-to-back wins in the Octagon, and he could earn more of a spotlight if he can keep up his recent winning ways.

Halle Berry

Halle Berry pulled out all stops for her fictional fight with UFC flyweight champ Valentina Shevchenko in her movie Bruised.

Berry made her directorial debut with her passion project entitled Bruised, which was released on Netflix earlier this month. It has received the promotional machine of the UFC due to the story revolving around an MMA fighter seeking redemption as well as the fact that it featured the likes of Shevchenko.

As it turns out, Berry took her role in this movie ultra seriously, as she explained in an interview with MMAFighting. Here, she explained that, in order to properly get into the mindset of a fighter and experience, she went through an actual weight cut ahead of filming her fight scenes with the UFC champion.

“That was a really big part of me playing this character. I wanted to experience every aspect of being a fighter, that I absolutely could. I wanted to understand what it felt like, and being the director of the story, I felt like I needed to understand it. So the weight cut for me, was probably a little bit more real than for Valentina. I was preparing like a month and a half before, just to get to a good fight weight.” Berry said.

As it turns out, the amount of effort that she put into this fight actually earned Halle Berry some props from the one and only Keith Peterson. The no-nonsense, veteran MMA referee apparently praised her performance, saying that he felt like he was refereeing a real fight.

“I was building muscle, and trying to lose weight at the same time, so that I could really physically look like a real opponent for her. I remember the day we were actually doing the fight, and we had Keith Peterson, a real UFC referee, and I remember the day he came to me, and we performed one of our sequences, and Keith said ‘My god, I thought for a minute, I was watching a real Valentina fight. That’s when I knew that, oh my god, all of this training, and weight cutting, muscle building, it was all worth it,” Berry said.

Regardless of how you feel about the film itself, there is no denying that Halle Berry put her heart and soul into it. The effort of going through any sort of weight cut is impressive dedication, to say the least.

Former UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz has requested that Keith Peterson not referee his fight against Casey Kenney at UFC 259 this weekend.

Peterson was infamously the man in the middle when Cruz squared off against Henry Cejudo last year. ‘The Dominator’ went on to suffer a second-round TKO loss – a stoppage he vehemently contested after the fight. Cruz even accused the veteran referee of smelling of alcohol.

“That was an early stoppage, 100 percent – I’m positive of it. I wish there was a way to keep these refs a little more responsible sometimes. The guy smelled like alcohol and cigarettes, so who knows what he was doing. Definitely (he did). I wish they drug tested them.”

Almost one year on and Cruz is still holding a grudge against Peterson. The 35-year-old revealed at the UFC 259 pre-fight press conference that he has asked the commission to not appoint Peterson as the referee for his upcoming fight.

“I made the request, and you hope the commission can honor your request. But when it all comes down to it, they run things, right?” Cruz said. “They have control over everything.”

“(UFC vice president of regulatory affairs) Marc Ratner alluded he was able to make that possible for me,” Cruz added. “It’s not that I hate this guy or anything. This is a business thing, and I did not feel like he was doing his just. There are plenty of refs. I’ve never had an issue with any other ref in the history of my career – before the fight started. I had an issue with him before the fight started in the locker room. So that’s what made me stand by the fact that I’d prefer another ref.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)
