Ronaldo Souza targets an interim UFC middleweight title bout against top contender Kelvin Gastelum at the upcoming UFC 237 pay-per-view event.
This comes after Robert Whittaker was slated to make his next title defense against Gastelum but had to pull out of the fight at the last minute due to a hernia at UFC 234.
Souza has called for this fight through the power of social media as he shared the following post on his official Twitter account:
“@Danawhite let’s go @ronaldojacare vs @kelvingastelum for the MW interim title Curitiba, Brazil,” Souza wrote.
Souza is coming off a third-round knockout victory over former UFC middleweight king Chris Weidman at UFC 230 at Madison Square Garden. Before that, he suffered a split decision loss to Kelvin Gastelum in May 2018 and is 3-2 in his last five bouts.
The UFC 237 pay-per-view event takes place on May 11, 2019 at Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, Brazil. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET. The preliminary card will air on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET and the the UFC’s streaming service, Fight Pass.

Conor McGregor rips top contender Kelvin Gastelum for the way that he acted after his scheduled fight inside of the Octagon was nixed at the last minute. Robert Whittaker was originally slated to make his next title defense against Gastelum but had to pull out of the fight at the last minute due to a hernia.
This was the original main event for the UFC 234 pay-per-view event. However, the UFC had to make some changes and moved Israel Adesanya vs. Anderson Silva in a middleweight bout to the headliner.
It turns out that Gastelum was walking backstage with a UFC title, which just so happened to belong to UFC flyweight champion Henry Cejudo.
Former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor was watching this show. In fact, he gave his take on the situation where he took some shots at Gastelum for his belt-wearing ways. He also went after him for his skin condition that Gastelum has been battling all week.
“Why is that worm holding the 185lb belt?” wrote McGregor. “There are worms crawling on his skin! It was absolutely ludicrous to even consider allowing him to compete. Let alone now walk around the arena shaking our fans hands. Someone sort this, this instant. And sterilize that belt. Immediately.”
