Former Ultimate Fighter winner Kelvin Gastelum will get the chance to make a name for himself this November, as he has agreed to step in and replace Robbie Lawler vs. Donald Cerrone.

The welterweight contest is expected to be part of UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden in New York City. Lawler bowed out of the bout, citing the need for more time to recover from his knockout loss to Tyron Woodley for the UFC title earlier this year.

Gastelum (12-2) picked up a win over former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks in July, improving to 7-2 with the promotion. Cerrone, meanwhile, is now 31-7 overall and 18-4 with the UFC, including three-straight wins since moving up to 170 pounds.

According to MMAjunkie, verbal agreements for the bout are in place, but it has yet to be signed.

The MMA world was dealt a disappointing blow when it was confirmed that former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler was forced out of his awaited showdown with Donald Cerrone at November 12’s UFC 205 from New York City.

A glimmer of hope came in the form of a rumor linking Nick Diaz to negotiations to replace “Ruthless,” but today (Wed., September 14, 2016) news has arrived that another top welterweight will apparently face “Cowboy.” According to a Tweet from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, No. 5-ranked welterweight Kelvin Gastelum has agreed to fight Cerrone in the UFC’s NYC debut:

While it may not be against a storied MMA legend like Lawler, defeating a fighter as highly ranked as Gastelum would arguably put Cerrone, who’s finished off Rick Story, Patrick Cote, and Alex Oliveira since moving up to 170 following a failed title bout against Rafael dos Anjos at lightweight, in title contention in one of MMA’s most talented divisions.

Although he’s had repeated problems making weight, Gastelum has picked up wins over some of welterweight’s finest, including a decision victory over former champion Johny Hendricks at July 9’s UFC 200 from Las Vegas. He’s currently split his last four bouts at 2-2, but both losses were closely contested split decisions to current champ Tyron Woodley (a bout many felt he won) and stalwart vet Neil Magny.

Gastelum was originally slated to face Jorge Masvidal at UFC Fight Night: Dos Anjos vs. Ferguson on November 5 from Mexico City, Mexico.

Kelvin Gastelum will return to Mexico for his next fight, as the former Ultimate Fighter winner meets Jorge Masvidal at UFC Fight Night 98.

Gastelum (12-2) has fought twice before in Mexico City, defeating Jake Ellenberger and Nate Marquardt. He is also coming off a victory over former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks in July.

Masvidal (30-11) has gone 7-4 inside the Octagon, besting Ross Pearson that same month of Gastelum’s win vs. Hendricks. Before the win, “Gamebred” had dropped split decisions to Benson Henderson and Lorenz Larkin.

UFC Fight Night 98 goes down November 5 from Mexico City and features Rafael dos Anjos vs. Tony Ferguson in the main event.

Sometimes in the sport of mixed martial arts the toughest fights aren’t fought in the Octagon, but rather behind closed doors in the days leading up to the event as fighters do whatever it takes to make weight for the bout.

It’s a dangerous practice that pushes fighters to the limit, both mentally and physically, and in the most extreme instances it’s actually been known to cause death.

For instance, back in December of 2015, ONE FC flyweight fighter Yang Jian Bing passed away at just 21 years od age after a horrendous weight cut led to him suffering a heart attack.

Thankfully, there’s never been a fatality in the UFC, but there have been many horror stories of weight cuts going horribly wrong over the years.

in this article we’ll look at 10 of the most brutal weight cuts in the promotion’s history, including instances where stars have passed out, been rushed to hospital, and in some cases stared death in the face after dehydrating their bodies to extent that they had nothing left to give.

Kelvin Gastelum Responds To Johny Hendricks’ Sparring Comments

Former UFC welterweight champion Johny “Bigg Rigg” Hendricks and former The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) winner Kelvin Gastelum are set to face off at July 9’s UFC 200 from Las Vegas, Nevada, but apparently it won’t be the first time the two have locked horns. According to Hendricks, the two have sparred in the past, and the session didn’t end well for Gastelum.

Recently speaking on MMA Junkie Radio, the 24-year-old Gastelum admitted that he was ‘beat up’ by Hendricks, but also claimed that it was during the peak of “Bigg Rigg’s” title campaign:

“It’s like, c’mon man,” said Gastelum. “You beat me up when I was one fight removed from ‘TUF,’ and you were training to be a world champion.”

Despite coming off of a loss, Gastelum feels as if he’s improved over time, and the former TUF winner is comfortable being the underdog in what he calls the biggest fight of his life:

“I’ve been in this position before, where I feel so comfortable being the underdog and stepping up and taking out whoever’s in front of me,” added Gastelum. “So this, for me, this is the biggest fight of my life. I’m fighting a former champion, and I’m fighting on the biggest card ever.”

“I kind of enjoy spoiling everybody’s thoughts and statistics. I go in there and just do me and get my hand raised and prove everybody wrong? That’s about as sweet as it gets for me.”

It sure will be a tough test for the young contender come July 9th, but Hendricks will also be out to prove something, as the former champion is coming off of a brutal stoppage loss to Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson last February.
