Top contender Kevin Lee got back into his winning ways at UFC Atlantic City.

As seen in the main event of Saturday’s UFC Atlantic City (April 21, 2018) at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey on FOX Sports 1, Lee picked up a TKO win in the fifth round over Edson Barboza.

Coming into this fight, Lee was trying gain momentum after losing to an interim lightweight title bout to Tony Ferguson at the UFC 216 PPV (pay-per-view) event in Las Vegas, Nevada in October of 2016.

After the event had concluded, Lee spoke with the media and noted that he believes he is in contention for a title fight against current lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov.

He broke it down to the media as he noted that it doesn’t look like Conor McGregor will return soon, Ferguson is still recovering from knee surgery, and now he is going up against the likes of Dustin Poirier and Eddie Alvarez for those fighters who could get a title shot.

“Here’s the thing: Eddie was too fat to take a fight less than a month ago (at UFC 223),” Lee told MMAjunkie post-fight. “When you say something like that, and you do that, your opportunity pass you by.

The man already had his shot, and he lost it, and done lost it and lost it embarrassingly. It is what it is. He was too fat a while ago. If he want the work, he can get it. Dustin, if the folks want to see Dustin then they will, but I don’t feel like he raise as many question that really need to be answered.

“I feel like I bring a complete style to this game, and I can raise up a lot of questions that people want answers for, especially with people like Khabib. He can’t outwrestle me, he can’t outwork me, he can’t out-strike me. So we’re going to see what the better fight (is) and what the UFC really wants, because that’s what really matters.”

In case he doesn’t get title shot against Nurmagomedov, Lee is prepared for that as he thinks that he could beat Alvarez or Poirier if the UFC offers him those fights.

“Nate don’t really want to fight,” Lee said. “I told him, ‘Shut the (expletive) up or go back to riding bikes.’ A month later he posted a picture of him riding bikes, so I guess he already done gave me that W. We going to see how this whole thing shake out. We going to see what Conor’s doing, sitting on the sidelines or what he want, but I feel like Khabib is the next fight to be had.”

No. 5-ranked Edson Barboza met No. 6 Kevin Lee for pivotal positioning in the deeply talented 155-pound title picture in the main event of tonight’s (Sat., April 21, 2018) UFC Fight Night 128 from the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

In a dominant showing, Lee showed his complete overall game by hanging with the lethal striker Barboza standing and absolutely dominating him on the ground. Lee’s pace was relentless, his takedowns successful, and his ground position and damage unwavering as he survived a third-round spinning wheel kick to pick up the biggest win of his MMA career.

It was a telling comeback fight for the surging 25-year-old Lee, who answered the questions about his loss to Ferguson and his weight-cutting problems with a resounding reply.

The 25-year-old ‘Motown Phenom’ not surprisingly looked to ground the Brazilian early, securing a textbook double leg in the opening frame:

The takedown opened a path for an onslaught of ground shots that continued until the end of the first:

Barboza got up from the ground already wearing the damage from Lee’s first-round onslaught:

Lee’s assault continued in the second round as he kept pounding Barboza to the point it seemed the fight would be stopped:

But Barboza turned the tide with his trademark spinning wheel kick that had Lee doing the stanky leg, a strike he somehow survived:

Here’s another slow-motion angle of Barboza’s kick:

Lee made it through the massive kick and stood and traded with Barboza throughout the later rounds, taking him down and maintaining dominant positions to batter Barboza until the cageside doctors had no choice but to stop the fight, awarding “The Motown Phenom” the biggest win he’s ever scored after he landed 233 strikes.

UFC Fight Night 128 went down tonight (Saturday, April 21, 2018) from the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ. The main event saw thrilling lightweight contenders Edson Barboza and Kevin Lee square up. Lee completely dominated large portions of the contest with his top control, passes, and ground and pound. But a battered Barboza nearly pulled off the Hail Mary win with a spinning heel kick in the third round, putting Lee on roller skates. “The Motown Phenom” shot in, managed a takedown, and survived. He continued to beat up Barboza while withstanding the Brazilian’s desperate haymakers to elicit a doctor’s stoppage in the fifth.

The co-headliner was a rematch between hometown favorite Frankie Edgar and fellow vet Cub Swanson. Edgar gave the Jersey faithful something to cheer about, out-kickboxing Swanson for three rounds.
