Khabib Nurmagomedov shocked the world after he retained his title last Saturday at UFC 254 by announcing his retirement in his post fight speech, meaning he leaves the sport at 29-0 and as the Lightweight king. On Tuesday he returned to Dagestan with his belt where he spoke with reporters for the first time since his retirement.

Speaking on Tuesday Nurmagomedov said “Of course (UFC president) Dana (White) wants me to continue fighting and generate revenue,” Nurmagomedov said in Russian, translated by RT Sport. “I can make money myself. I’m at the peak of my career and can fight for very large purses, but I made this decision, and I think this is the best time. Not everyone can retire at their peak, but I know that in a year, two or five (years) I’d have to face that decision again. I did enough in the sport to be considered the best. Today, I was ranked as the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter, so the mission is accomplished. What else is there to do? Make money? I’ll always be able to do that.”

Later on ‘The Eagle’ talked about his friend and teammate Islam Makhachev‘s plan to hold the UFC Lightweight belt one day.

“Life goes on, and our MMA academy is still running,” Nurmagomedov stated. “Islam Makhachev got a fight on Nov. 14 in Las Vegas against a former lightweight champion (Rafael dos Anjos). It’s a major event or our team. Like my father said, when I leave there’ll be another champion. There won’t be another guy like me. It’ll be hard to repeat what I did. We are planning for Islam to win his fight and fight again before Ramadan to become a contender for the belt. Then next year in September or October, he’ll be here with his belt.”

Nurmagomedov then talks about how his mother knew he was going to retire but that she was surprised he announced its right after the fight. “Well, the emotions ran high, she knew, but I don’t think she expected me to announce it right after the fight. I did promise her that this would be my last fight, so she was aware.” (Transcribed by MMAJunkie)

On Tuesday Khabib overtook Jon Jones to be the number 1 in the official pound-for-pound rankings in the UFC, which was his final wish before he stepped out of the octogan for the last time.

Major League Baseball star Josh Donaldson has labeled UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov “one of the most boring fighters in the world.”

Donaldson is currently plying his trade as the starting third baseman at Minnesota Twins. Before that he made a name for himself at the Toronto Blue Jays. While in Canada the 34-year-old UFC fan attended several big MMA events and even struck up a friendship with welterweight contender Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson.

In an interview with Ariel Helwani alongside Carlos Correa of the Houston Astros, Donaldson gave his honest opinion on the ongoing GOAT debate surrounding Khabib Nurmagomedov and Jon Jones, he said.

“If Jon Jones wanted to be a boring fighter, he would go and wrestle guys down and take them down and submit them if he wanted to.”

“I think Khabib is one of the most boring fighters in the world. I’m on record as saying right now he’s one of the most boring fighters. Because this is why — he is dominant on the ground. You win. I’m agreeing with you. He is the most dominant on-the-ground fighter in the world. But Khabib, although he’s touching Gaethje, he never hurt Gaethje on his feet. And when you’re talking about Gaethje and your talking about Ferguson, Tony Ferguson took a lot of punishment but they were on the feet. None of them were trying to threaten to the ground.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Nurmagomedov retired from MMA this past weekend after choking Justin Gaethje unconscious inside two rounds of their lightweight unification fight at UFC 254. Prior to that ‘The Eagle’ scored back-to-back high-profile submission wins over former dual weight UFC champion Conor McGregor and fan favourite Dustin Poirier. On Tuesday he was named the pound-for-pound number one fighter on the planet, displacing Jon Jones in the latest update of the official UFC rankings.

Do you agree with Josh Donaldson? Is Khabib Nurmagomedov a boring fighter?

It didn’t take long for Conor McGregor to put down Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Nurmagomedov retired from mixed martial arts with a 29-0 record following his impressive second-round submission win over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 this past weekend.

Some observers have since declared him as the greatest fighter of all time while many others believe he is currently the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world today.

What cannot be denied, however, are the various accomplishments of “The Eagle” which will almost certainly be hard to match. And although he posted a sincere message to Nurmagomedov shortly after his retirement, the Irishman later took issue with some of these accomplishments which were posted by MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn.

The first one being that Nurmagomedov is one of three Russian-born UFC champions.

“Rushed work Michael,” McGregor tweeted. “Andre’s Belorussian, and the reason the Belarus flag is on the newly designed belt. Along with 7 other countries of the first Champion winners. Oleg Taktarov is the other Russian winner you seek. Although in tournament format it was without an official belt.

“The first official UFC belt was presented at, yes you guessed it, UFC Twelve. Mark Coleman the winner, ensuring America’s flag on today’s new belt design. Alongside Netherlands,Bas. Canada,Carlos. Belarus,Andre. Brazil,Bustamante. Poland,Joanna. England,Michael. Ireland,Conor ??

McGregor would then put down the rest of the accomplishments on the list.

“Also… the rest of those stats are garbage. Multiple tied seconds, most takedowns in a division bar someone else, etc etc. It’s a garbage list full of overstretched accomplishments.”

While McGregor does have a point that many of those records are tied with other fighters, the one thing Nurmagomedov trumps everybody with, of course, is that unparalleled 29-fight winning streak.

What do you make of McGregor’s response?

Khabib ‘The Eagle’ Nurmagomedov’s route to last Saturday night’s UFC lightweight championship unification clash with interim champion, Justin ‘The Highlight’ Gaethje was filled with adversity including the unfortunate passing of his coach and father, Abdulmanap earlier this year – as well a broken foot which he suffered three week’s prior to the contest.

Khabib, who announced his sudden retirement from professional mixed martial arts after his main event clash with Gaethje, did so as the undisputed UFC lightweight champion, sitting at a perfect 29-0 to boot.

Taking on Elevation Fight Team staple, Gaethje in the unification clash, Khabib sealed his legacy with a second-round triangle, choking the Arizonian unconscious, before an emotional post-fight interview with promotional commentator, Jon Anik in which he announced his decision to hang up his gloves, following a discussion with his mother – citing how he wasn’t willing to make another Octagon walk without his father by his side.

The 32-year-old Sambo specialist, who largely wasn’t expected to continue his professional career beyond the thirty-fight mark, noted the expected upcoming clash of former opponents, Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier, and ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor at UFC 257 in January, explaining how he’s not interested in that potential fight – having scored victories against both.

Following the poignant interview with Anik – UFC president, Dana White noted how he was hearing rumblings Khabib had suffered an injury prior to the event, and how the mixed martial arts community as a whole was lucky to see him step foot into the Octagon at UFC 254.

“”Listen, man, what he’s (Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s) been through, we’re all lucky we got to see him fight tonight,” White said. “And I’m hearing rumours of other things that I didn’t know about, that you guys will hear about when he comes out later I’m sure.

Apparently, he was in the hospital – he broke his foot. Three weeks ago. So he has two broken toes and a bone in his foot that’s broken, or something like that. That’s what his corner was telling me. And never told anybody – [was] walking around, I mean, he is one of the toughest human beings on the planet and he is just – he’s the number-one pound-for-pound fighter in the world. And seriously, you have to start putting him up there at G.O.A.T. status, whoever else you think is the G.O.A.T.

Posting to his official Instagram earlier this week, Nurmagomedov shared images of his broken foot as well as an x-ray scan of the injury.

With Khabib’s decision to call time on a gleaming professional career which came to a conclusion with a trio of successful title defence submissions against the division’s most dangerous strikers, McGregor, Poirier, and Gaethje – the promotion will have to put together some sort of matchup or format to crown a new undisputed champion in Khabib’s absence.

So far, seven-fight streaking contender, Charles Oliveira has called for his inclusion in any discussion of a vacant lightweight title fight, while former three-time Bellator lightweight best, Michael Chandler has floated the idea of a four-man tournament involving himself, both Poirier and McGregor, as well as rumoured foe, Tony Ferguson.
