It was a wild week for the UFC and Al Iaquinta.

It’s been documented that the main event of the UFC 223 pay-per-view event went through three officially changes.

The UFC attempted to book Khabib Nurmagomedov against Tony Ferguson and Max Holloway in the main event for the lightweight title.

However, those fighters weren’t able to make the fight due to weight cutting issues or injury. Thus, they got Iaquinta to step in on short notice to take on the undefeated champ in the headliner.

As many believed would happen, it did, Khabib ended up winning the fight along with the undisputed UFC lightweight title.

However, Iaquinta stated in a recent interview that he’s down for a rematch and believes he could win the second fight with the newly crowned champion.

“I think so,” Iaquinta told TMZ Sports when asked if he would beat Khabib in a rematch (transcript courtesy of Bloody Elbow). “(At UFC 223), I was fighting in the mindset of trying to go in there just like I (would).”

“A lot of people thought I just had a one-shot chance, and after the first two rounds I kind of went back into that mindset where I was just trying to catch him with one punch, rather than beat him.”

Also, Iaquinta stated that he believes that his overall skill set is enough to make the outcome of a second fight much different. He also thinks a full training camp would help as well.

“My wrestling’s good,” Iaquinta said. “I got in on a deep single-leg, and I almost think I should’ve tried to finish it. But I pulled out and started punching because I wanted to get that knockout shot.”

“(If) I’m in shape for five rounds, and I am able to really let it go and exert myself with the wrestling exchanges and scrambles, I think it (will be) a totally different fight.”

Although Khabib Nurmagomedov only one the title a few days ago, there are already fighters calling him out for fights.

As seen in the main event of the UFC 223 pay-per-view event on Saturday night (April 7th, 2018) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, Nurmagomedov put on a dominant performance against Al Iaquinta and won the fight by decision to become the new lightweight champion.

Once the event was over, there some competitors calling for a fight with the new champion including former lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez.

During a recent Instagram Live, the former champ stated that he is the guy to hand Nurmagomedov his first loss in his pro-MMA career.

“I am Khabib’s Kryptonite,” said Alvarez (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting). “You all know it. It’s the elephant in the room. I’m the guy in the lightweight division, the only guy, that can beat Khabib. Everyone knows it. He can run to Georges [St-Pierre] or run to Conor [McGregor] or run to whoever, I’m the guy. I’m the guy to put that ‘1’ in that loss column.”

If you recall, once Tony Ferguson had to pull out of the UFC 223 pay-per-view event, the UFC did approach Alvarez about stepping in and replacing him in the main event.

However, that wasn’t meant to be as Alvarez was over the 155-pound limit on six days notice.

“I will be gunning for the lightweight championship belt,” said Alvarez. “Khabib’s gonna take some time off, I believe, for prayer and reflection.

I don’t know where that leaves me but I’m gonna sit down with the UFC and let them know, I’m the guy to dethrone this man, I’m the guy to give him his loss. I beat champions, that’s what I thrive on. I love belts. I love collecting them. I love beating champions.”

“Khabib is king – temporarily,” said Alvarez. “Everything is temporary. . . Let ‘The Underground King’ do it one more time and get that belt back.”

Losing Khabib Fight Was ‘Tough Pill To Swallow’ For Max Holloway

After Tony Ferguson suffered an injury that forced him to withdraw from his scheduled UFC 223 (April 7, 2018) main event against Khabib Nurmagomedov on less than one weeks’ notice, 145-pound champion Max Holloway decided to step up and accept a fight with Nurmagomedov for the undisputed lightweight title.

On weigh-in day, however, Holloway was deemed medically unfit to compete by the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC).

And “Blessed” admits that when he received the news, it was ‘tough’ to handle:

“When they called it, the fighter in me wanted to fight no matter what,” Holloway told Hawaii News Now.

“Everybody keeps giving the commission a hard time, but they’re there to protect us,” Holloway said. ”They’re there to protect us for our own good. Who knows what would have happened if they let me go? But they checked vitals before, they did a vital check in the morning. The last one, they just didn’t like the way I looked. They called it, man. Tough. It was a tough one.

“A tough pill to swallow, but that’s what they’re there for. They’re there to protect the fighters. Like (UFC president Dana White) said, they’re there to protect us. This is history, but history can wait.”

As far as the weight cut goes, Holloway implied that he was only a few pounds away from hitting the 155-pound limit, although he also said that he came into fight week heavier than usual given that he wasn’t in a fight camp:

“The weight cut day I was cutting weight, they checked on me earlier that night. I went to sleep, they came check me early in the morning, right before weigh-ins. I had a couple more to go and they called it.

“I keep telling you guys I’m a big 145er, I was even a big 155er for this one,” Holloway said.

And in regards to what’s next for him, Holloway will now shift his focus back to featherweight where he’s next expected to defend his title against Brian Ortega:

“I saw Ortega was there, Ortega kept talking about how he wished it was him – blah, blah, this and that,” Holloway said. “I don’t know. Things happen for a reason. So I can’t wait to fight him. If that’s the next guy up, that’s the next guy up.

“I can’t wait to do the damn thing and get it done. If not, I heard they just announced the LA card, right? August. It would be fun, going into another king’s home to dethrone a king again.”

Khabib Nurmagomedov Says Conor McGregor Now Has To ‘Beg’ Him For Title Shot

Undefeated Dagestani phenom Khabib Nurmagomedov finally fulfilled the massive potential that had been heaped upon him since he joined the UFC by defeating Al Iaquinta (watch highlights here) for the lightweight title in the main event of last night’s (Sat., April 7, 2018) UFC 223 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

But it obviously wasn’t without the most chaotic build-up to a UFC title fight ever, beginning when his oft-scheduled original opponent was forced out with a knee injury, continuing when former UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor threw a metal handcart through the window of a bus he was riding, injuring at least two people and striking three fights off UFC 223, and finally ending with a dominant performance over Iaquinta, his fifth prospective opponent after Ferguson’s original replacement Max Holloway was deemed unfit to compete.

Yes, it was that kind of week, and yet Khabib still persevered to win the lightweight title even though some, including a noxious, overblown version of octagon commentator Joe Rogan, felt his striking was absolutely abhorrent as he peppered Iaquinta – a fighter known for his boxing skills – with nonstop jabs to the point that ‘Ragin’ Al’s’ face was bloodied badly. True, he has some striking deficiencies to shore up after a lifetime of perfecting his dominant grappling skills, but at the end of the day, there’s little doubt that ‘The Eagle’ is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in MMA.

That has the mixed martial arts world awaiting his potential match-up with McGregor, and even though Khabib called out the legendary Georges St-Pierre in two post-fight interviews – a bout GSP quickly rebuffed – he’ll have the specter of the infamous Irishman hanging over his head until they meet. Case in point, Khabib was obviously asked about his mega-famous foil at the post-fight presser, the surging future star said he has to settle his rivalry with ‘The Notorious’ at some point:

“We have to finish this beef, chicken or something like this. He have to stop eating Burger Kings. You want to fight? Come. I told you guys, I’m going to make him humble. I’m going to change his game.

“Now only one champion.

“No more fake champions, no more champion who never defend his title or something like this. Now UFC has champion, and this champion wants to defend his title. You want to fight? Come here. Inside the cage? Come. Outside the cage? Come. Let me know without camera, without like all this media.”

Apparently, McGregor’s made it personal with his all-out assault that left him incarcerated in handcuffs and facing serious charges because he’s willing to settle the long-standing rivalry inside of the cage or outside of it.

But he knows that a legitimate main event versus the Irishman would be huge for all parties, especially with the necessary time to promote it sufficiently, so he’s also aiming for a World Tour the likes of which McGregor went on with Jose Aldo in 2015.

However, he’s now the champ, and he turned the tables on McGregor by saying it was “The Notorious” who now had to beg him to get a title shot :

“I hope he’s going to fight – we have to fight. Like make World Tour. Everywhere, like Tokyo, Moscow, Dublin, Los Angeles, Rio. Big world tour, promote this fight and fight end of year, biggest arena in the world. Madison Square Garden. … I’m here. He want to become lightweight champion? He have to fight with me. No more all these fake champions.

“You guys remember when he put tweet, ‘Beg me.’ Please beg me.”
