UFC star Khabib Nurmagomedov said he wants to fight lightweight champion Conor McGregor and would be willing to do so for free.

Nurmagomedov spoke to TMZ Sports and was asked what figure it would take for him to accept a fight with McGregor. He replied: “Zero. I don’t need money, I need only real fights, fights for the title. I don’t fight for the money. I fight for my legacy, I fight for history, I fight for my people, that’s why I’m here.”

McGregor, whose last foray into the UFC was in November 2016, stoked the fires when he criticised Nurmagomedov on Twitter after his Performance of the Night, unanimous-decision victory over Edson Barboza at UFC 219 (warning: contains profanity):

The tweet has sparked a war of words between the two (warning: contains profanity):

Nurmagomedov also responded to McGregor‘s initial comment, which referred to his native Dagestan in Russia, while speaking to TMZ“From Dagestan we have more than 15 fighters in UFC, and we have more victories than Irish fighters.”

He added on the Irishman: “Now everybody forgets about him because he doesn’t want a real fight. He fights only with 45 years old Floyd Mayweather or marijuana guy who’s lost 10 times…Nate Diaz. This is crazy, he has to defend his belt.”

The Eagle has a 25-0 record in MMA, putting him firmly among the strongest opponents McGregor could defend his lightweight title against, along with interim champion Tony Ferguson.

UFC heavyweight Chase Sherman believes a fight between McGregor and Nurmagomedov would only go one way:

Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Snowden disagrees, however:

It would be a mouthwatering tilt.

McGregor would also have the added challenge of coming into the Octagon after more than a year without an MMA fight, as his only bout in 2017 was his boxing match with Mayweather.

Nurmagomedov may be happy to take on the Notorious for free, but given the interest the contest would undoubtedly attract, it could also prove a lucrative venture for both fighters.

At UFC 205 in November 2016, undefeated lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov raised some eyebrows when it was noticed that he was speaking not only to his opponent, Michael Johnson, whom he beat via submission, but also to UFC President Dana White during the fight.

This past weekend (Dec. 30, 2017), Nurmagomedov made his long awaited return to action, and something similar took place.

Taking on Edson Barboza, “The Eagle” scored a dominant victory, but footage once again surfaced of him yelling to White during the fight.

With the victory, Nurmagomedov is likely in line to land another big fight. With divisional champion Conor McGregor’s future unclear, “The Eagle” has expressed interest in taking on interim titleholder Tony Ferguson next.

UFC Rankings Update: McGregor Somehow Rises On P4P List

Two of the UFC’s top pound-for-pound fighters picked up pivotal wins at last weekend’s (Sat., December 30, 2017) UFC 219 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg securing a decision win over Holly Holm and dominant lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov brutally pounding Edson Barboza in an at-times hard-to-watch co-main event.

For those efforts, Cyborg and Khabib deservedly earned a rise up the official pound-for-pound rankings, with Cyborg moving up one spot to No. 9 and Khabib finally debuting at No. 14. That’s to be expected; however, perhaps the most shocking rise up the pound-for-pound list was made by Conor McGregor, who somehow surpassed Georges St-Pierre to overtake the No. 2 spot despite not fighting for almost 14 months at this point.

St-Pierre’s drop was most likely precipitated by his recent vacating of the middleweight title hardly one month after he won at UFC 217 on November 4, yet he has fought for a UFC title much more recently than McGregor. By comparison, No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter Demetrious Johnson recently topped Anderson Silva for the record for most consecutive title defenses in UFC history with 11; McGregor has none.

There’s no doubting “The Notorious’” electric drawing power and scintillating knockout ability, but his UFC return is currently unknown – and perhaps even unlikely – after he reportedly earned $100 million to box Floyd Mayweather last August. He’s been rumored to finally defend the lightweight belt against interim champion Tony Ferguson, but those are only rumors.

His status as by far the biggest star in MMA is obviously keeping him near the top of the media-generated rankings, however, and that’s unlikely to stop until he finally returns and loses a fight – if he ever does.

Current UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and lightweight title contender Khabib Nurmagomedov continued to exchange words on Twitter.

It is interesting seeing McGregor talking about fighting again. It all started after Nurmagomedov picked up a dominant win over Edson Barboza at UFC 219 and subsequent Twitter beef with ‘The Notorious.’

McGregor kicked things off by calling the win ‘dog sh-t’ and went on to say that the undefeated Dagestani needs to get on his knees and ‘beg’ for a fight.

If you recall, Nurmagomedov was the one to call out McGregor and interim UFC lightweight champion in his post-fight interview at UFC 219. Since then, heated words have been exchanged.

Despite the fact that the title contender has been inactive as of late by only fighting three times in the past three and a half years, he is still considered as a top choice to challenge for the title next.

On the flip side, McGregor hasn’t fought in the Octagon in over a year and has yet to defend his lightweight title.

Instead, he spent his time hyping a mega-boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr. As seen in the fight, he lost it via 10th-round TKO at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena this past August.

McGregor is currently trying to iron out a new contract with the UFC and wants to be paid his worth. You can see their exchange on the social media platform here:
