Former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker believes Khamzat Chimaev is a rough matchup for Colby Covington.

In the aftermath of UFC 280, Dana White appeared to heavily hint that a No.1 contender clash at 170lbs between Khamzat Chimaev and Colby Covington in early 2023.

In a recent interview with Submission Radio, Robert Whittaker, who is currently preparing to face Paulo Costa, discussed the matchup between Chimaev and Covington. ‘The Reaper’ was all for the fight in terms of the fight build-up, with both men notorious trash talkers. He stated:

“Media-wise, I think it’ll be a spectacle. Yeah, expect the full circus. And that’ll be fun in itself. Those things, whilst I don’t like prioritizing them in a sport, as a sportsman and as someone in the industry, for the sport and for the UFC as a whole, having those characters, those personalities and things, it just brings eyes. It’s just great for all the other athletes. You know, within reason.”

However, when discussing how the two men square up, skill for skill, Whittaker claims there is one clear favorite in this fight:

Now, stylistically, fight-wise, I think that’s a terrible fight for Colby. Terrible. Because you saw with Usman that anyone Colby can’t just relentlessly spam takedowns on, it becomes a kickboxing fight and a striking match. And I think Covington’s great at what he does, but he’s not a kickboxer, he’s not a striker by trade. That doesn’t come naturally to him.

“His pressure style and wrestling style is what comes naturally to him. Khamzat can counter-wrestle Colby. He’s a big dude with long range and a lot of reach, and his striking is nothing ridiculously crazy, but it’s put together at a high level. And he integrates that with the threat of his wrestling and grappling takedowns stupendously. So, I think Khamzat for Colby is a bad match-up.”

Robert Whittaker on whether Colby Covington would fare better over 5 rounds

One of Colby Covington’s most effective weapons has always been his incredible cardio. As a result, some might believe ‘Chaos’ would fare considerably better if the fight with Chimaev were over five rounds instead of three.

Not Robert Whittaker though, who is confident Khamzat defeats Covington regardless.

“I think that’s due to the fact that it’s more about the people he’s fighting. Like, he’s a smart guy. And his fight IQ is very high. You can see that, regardless of how he portrays himself, he’s a smart guy when he’s in there. And so he knows who he can unload on and pull the trigger and who he cannot. I would back Khamzat for sure. I think it’s a bad match-up for Colby.”

Former undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov has denounced the physical altercation between his cousin, Abubakar Nurmagomedov, and undefeated welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 280 last weekend – describing the coming together between the two as “nonsense” – he and his team are “tired” of dealing with.

Guiding newly minted undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Islam Makahchev at the Abu Dhabi, UAE event, Khabib watched on as his teammate struck gold with a second round arm-triangle submission win over Charles Oliveira at the Etihad Arena.

During the post-fight celebrations afterwards, however, Khabib’s cousin, Abubakar found himself involved in a physical altercation with the above-mentioned, Chimaev, with the latter landing a series of strikes with a closed fist on Nurmagomedov.

In the hours following the pay-per-view event, Khabib, Makhachev, as well as Chimaev and others gathered at a celebratory meal following the team’s title success, with the latter posing for a picture with Abubakar – with Chechen warlord and sanctioned leader, Ramzan Kadyrov mediating between the duo in a bid to end their spat

Khabib Nurmagomedov condemns the in-fighting brawl at UFC 280 last weekend

Sharing his thoughts on Chimaev’s altercation with his cousin, Abubakar, former lightweight titleholder, Khabib Nurmagomedov maintained he was “tired” of dealing with “nonsense” that arises.

“What happened yesterday does not show us well,” Khabib Nurmagomedov said. “Neither me, nor Khamzat, nor Abubakar. To tell the truth, we are tired of this nonsense! Here we are gathered together as brothers. We talked to each other, and we apologized to each other, hugged. And Inshallah, I hope that in the future that we will only gather and fight for good reasons.”

“Today Islam won the belt, he’s the first,” Khabib continued. “The next one is very close, and it’s gonna be Khamzat. And Khamzat let us all get together. So when Khamzat wins the belt, it’s not for showing off, not for this conversation, that we are going to celebrate. We will celebrate for our new champion, Inshallah.”

“I hope that our sad moment right here, that it will never happen to anyone else again,” Khabib explained. “So that people don’t talk badly about us, we will always be together as brothers, Inshallah.”

Belal Muhammad wants Khamzat Chimaev after UFC 280, disses Colby Covington: “Colby’s out here hiding”

Belal Muhammad Colby Covington Khamzat Chimaev

The pre-fight build-up between Belal Muhammad and Sean Brady was real, but at the end of the night, only one man could walk out of the cage victorious. ‘Remember the Name’ gave fans an exact reason to do just that, as he lived up to his promise and finished the Philadelphia native.

During fight week, things began escalating between Muhammad and Brady. At the press conference, things kind of reached their boiling point as both fighters would get pretty angry at one another and essentially promise to knock the other out.

Everybody was on the edge of their seats when it became time to throw down, and the two fighters did not disappoint. After an intense first round, the second began and things really turned into a brawl at the end. Both men stood on their feet, letting their hands fly.

Belal Muhammad would hurt Brady late into the second, and chaos really ensued. The Philly fighter attempted to work the cage and regather his wits, but ‘Remember the Name’ was on a mission. He chased Brady around the octagon, throwing a vicious cocktail of straights, hooks, and uppercuts. Eventually, the referee had seen enough and stepped in to stop the action after a series of particularly brutal blows.

Belal Muhammad calls out Khamzat Chimaev after claiming Colby Covington is “hiding”

After a monumental performance, Muhammad took the microphone and laid down fire. He boldly called out his next desired opponent and claimed that Colby Covington isn’t really as eager to fight as he may make it out to be.

“I do not think Colby (Covington) is going to be fighting (Khamzat Chimaev in March in the U.K.),” Belal Muhammad began. “Colby’s out here hiding. He’s doing his own little thing. He’s definitely not fighting Khamzat. The people talk about (Covington) like he’s the next big thing, but who has he beaten that’s won?”

“He’s beaten (Jorge) Masvidal on a three-fight losing streak. He’s beaten (Tyron) Woodley like on a five-fight losing streak. Everybody he’s fought and (beaten), they’re all coming off losing streaks. The only fight he had a good fight on was (Kamaru) Usman, and then he ended up getting finished in that fight. Other than that, everybody has been losses. He hasn’t been fighting these top guys. I just beat (Vicente) Luque who was on a seven-fight winning streak. I just beat (Brady), who was on a 15-fight winning streak. I’m the only one fighting guys that are on winning streaks.”

“I didn’t see (Chimaev) in the crowd, but I’d like to see him in the cage,” Belal Muhammad continued. “Brother, what happened to ‘Nate Diaz in August, Bully B in October’? I’ll fight you at 179.8. I don’t care about weight. I want to fight the best guys in the world, and I think I’m the best guy in the world, so step into my office.”

UFC president, Dana White maintains he was unaware of undefeated welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev’s attendance at UFC 280 at the Etihad Arena last night prior to his appearance. And insists his physical scuffle with Abubakar Nurmagomedov is just something that comes with the nature of associating with the Chechen-born finisher.

Attending UFC 280 last night on ‘Fight Island’ in Abu Dhabi, UAE alongside Ali Kadyrov – the son of Chechen warlord, Ramzan Kadyrov, Chimaev was involved in a post-event scuffle with Abubakar Nurmagomedov – the cousin of former UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Engaging in a conversation with Nurmagomedov during event headliner, Islam Makhachev’s post-fight victory interview following a submission win over Charles Oliveira, Chimaev struck Nurmagomedov in the face with a closed fist, before security and officials corralled the duo.

Dana White remains unsurprised with Khamzat Chimaev’s extracurricular skirmishes

Speaking on Chimaev’s involvement in yet another physical altercation outside of the Octagon, UFC head honcho, White claimed that was the risk of dealing with a fighter such as the AllStars MMA staple.

“What do I even say about that?” Dana White told assembled media following UFC 280. “It happens, especially with him [Khamzat Chimaev]. It happens.”

“He (Khamzat Chimaev) was sitting on our side (of the Octagon on fighter row),” White explained. “I didn’t even know Khamzat was coming tonight. He was invited by Abu Dhabi. So the seats behind me here in Abu Dhabi are owned by Abu Dhabi.”

Most recently competing at UFC 279 in an impromptu co-headlining slot against Kevin Holland, Chimaev improved to 12-0 as a professional courtesy of a D’Arce choke win, however, was involved in a pre-fight physical altercation with the Riverside native on Thursday during fight week.

In the hours following Chimaev’s physical interaction with Nurmagomedov, the above-mentioned Kadyrov, who has been sanctioned by the United States government, offered his mediating ability to convince the duo to resolve their differences.

Chimaev, a close personal friend of Kadyrov, who has been sanctioned by the United States government, attended UFC 280 last night at the Eithad Arena in Abu Dhabi, UAE – seating alongside Kadyrov’s teenage son, Ali Kadyrov.

In the night’s main event, Russian sambo expert, Islam Makhachev scooped the undisputed lightweight championship – defeating Charles Oliveira in a one-sided second round arm-triangle submission win.

However, during Makhachev’s post-fight Octagon interview, Chimaev and Nurmagomedov – the cousin of former UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, were corralled by UFC officials and security after they threw several punches at each other

Today, however, it appears the beef between Chimaev and Abubakar Nurmagomedov has been put on the backburner, with the former attended a dinner alongside Khabib and Makhachev.

“A small misunderstanding that took place personally between me and Khlamzat (sic) (Khamzat Chimaev),” Abubakar Nurmagomedov posted on Instagram. “After that, we met with him in the Brotherhood circle, where we were gathered by the elders. As I said in an interview before my fight, Khlamzat is my brother in Faith and I always wish him health and success. I ask you, brothers, not to invent any kind of gossip and I hope our meeting will be beneficial between our brotherly people.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Ramzan Kadyrov holds peace talks with Khamzat Chimaev and Abubakar Nurmagomedov

A protagonist in peace talks between Khamzat Chimaev and Nurmagomedov comes in the form of the above-mentioned Chechnya leader, Kadyrov, who posted a screenshot on Instagram of himself engaging in a video call with both Chimaev and Nurmagomedov – accompanied by a caption detailing how he managed to settle the pair’s issues.

Chimaev most recently competed against Kevin Holland at UFC 279 back in September in Las Vegas, Nevada – securing a first round D’Arce choke win in an impromptu fight. The Chechen-born fighter was also involved in a pre-fight scuffle with Holland on Thursday during fight week, with the duo corralled by security – forcing a pre-fight press conference to be cancelled.
