Khamzat Chimaev

Undefeated UFC welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev, is reportedly unable to leave the country of Russia according to a report from Brazilian outlet, Combate, after the Chechen-born fighter saw authorities seize his passport after he arrived in St. Petersburg.

Chimaev, the current #3 ranked welterweight contender, improved his professional mixed martial arts record to 12-0 last month in the co-main event of UFC 279 against Kevin Holland, securing a first round D’Arce choke submission win.

According to Combate, Chimaev, who was set to visit family in his native Chechnya, arrived in St. Petersburg, Russia this week, and has since had his passport seized by authorities, leaving him currently unable to leave the country.

The report details how Khamzat Chimaev’s team are currently in discussions with Swedish government officials in order to expedite a return to the country. Chimaev is a resident of Sweden and currently trains at AllStars MMA in the country under head coach, Andreas Michael. The 28-year-old immigrated to Sweden at the age of 19.

Chimaev was reportedly expected to travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Thursday of this week in order to attend the premiere of “O Belta Preta – A Verdadeira Historia de Fernando Terere.”

Khamzat Chimaev shares a well-publicized relationship with Ramzan Kadyrov

The undefeated contender has been the subject of scrutiny over the last number of years for his relationship with Chechen warlord, Ramzan Kadyrov, with the duo pictured and filmed together at functions and events in Chechnya. Chimaev and Kadyrov have spent time training and grappling together recently, with the latter also gifting Khamzat Chimaev a Mercedes Benz SUV following a previous Octagon victory, which Chimaev ultimately crashed.

The Chechen fighter was the subject of much criticism last month ahead of his UFC 279 appearance, with Chimaev missing weight ahead of a scheduled headliner against Nate Diaz by a whopping seven and a half pounds, resulting in the cancellation of their bout atop the card.

Nick Maximov was backstage at the UFC 279 press conference when a brawl broke out. Maximov is a training partner of Nick and Nate Diaz and was with Nate at this time. Kevin Holland and Khamzat Chimaev got into a physical confrontation which spread to the other groups waiting backstage. It got severe enough that due to security concerns, the press conference was forced to be canceled by UFC President Dana White.

UFC Middleweight Nick Maximov recently sat down with Alex Behunin of LowKickMMA and explained that the whole thing got blow way out of proportion. In a recent interview, he explained:

“I thought it was just blown out of proportion. It was like not even nothing really crazy happened. It was kind of, I think, they were just trying to make a scene out of it when it wasn’t a scene, you know. It was whatever. It was kind of lame that Dana did that.”

Nick Maximov on Nate Diaz and Khamzat Chimaev’s weight issues

Khamzat Chimaev was originally booked to face Nate Diaz in a five-round welterweight headlining bout at UFC 279. Due to a massive weight miss, the Russian athlete was not allowed to face Diaz. A shuffle happened so Chimaev fought Kevin Holland, while Diaz fought Tony Ferguson. The Stockton-born Diaz was able to defeat the former Interim UFC champion Ferguson via fourth-round submission in what is likely to be his final fight in the UFC.

Next to Diaz throughout the entire affair was his training partner Nick Maximov. The 24-year-old US-born fighter explained his perspective of the UFC 279 chaos. He says he was impressed with Nate keeping cool and adjusting to a new opponent. Speaking to LowKickMMA, Maximov said:

“I don’t think you can even fight when you’re that far off weight. It’s like, I thought the show was over with… But it worked out for him. So it’s cool they gotta fight so quick. Yeah I mean it wouldn’t happen to anyone else but Nate, you know what I’m saying. But he’s the man he can take all the punches.”

Upcoming on October 15 on UFC Fight Night: Grasso vs. Araujo, Nick Maximov (8-1-0) will take on the Australian Jacob Malkoun (6-2-0) in a middleweight showdown. To hear the American athlete discuss his upcoming fight and more, check out the interview below.

Bo Nickal

UFC light-heavyweight Anthony Smith claimed Bo Nickal would ‘ragdoll’ fearsome contender Khamzat Chimaev.

Three-time NCAA division I wrestling champion, Bo Nickal had only been in the UFC for a matter of minutes before he took to the mic to call out Khamzat Chimaev.

Following his second successful appearance on Dana White Contender Series, Nickal would be rewarded with a UFC contract, setting his sights high in an interview with Laura Sanko.

“If the UFC wishes, give me that Swedish dude,” Nickal said. “He might not even be the best guy because he can’t even make weight, but if that’s the case, I’ll take him.”

Although many believe it would be far too soon, there are those who say with Nickal’s wrestling background, he will be a serious threat to the 185lb division.

Former UFC title challenger Anthony Smith says that when it comes down to wrestling, a match between Chimaev and Nickal ‘wouldn’t even be competitive.

He [Nickal] will ragdoll Khamzat in a wrestling match,” Smith said on an episode of the Believe You Me podcast. “It wouldn’t even be competitive, he’s that f***ing good. There’s not a Dagestani/Russian wrestler in the UFC that’s gonna beat Bo Nickal. I don’t even care what weight class you say it is.”

What is next for Bo Nickal?

Following his win, Nickal would also guarantee that we would see him before the end of the year. It would only be a matter of days until Nickal would be booked in a fight against Jamie Pickett at UFC 282 on December 12 in Las Vegas.

At just 3-0 as a professional Nickal will take on Pickett who although has had mixed results in the promotion, has competed for the UFC six times and has had 21 professional fights.

How will Bo Nickal do in the UFC?

Bo Nickal, Henry Cejudo, Khamzat Chimaev

Henry Cejudo has backed Bo Nickal to out grapple Khamzat Chimaev in a potential bout.

Nickal is coming off a dominant win over Donovan Beard at this past Tuesday’s Dana White Contender’s Series. He came out firing from the get-go in his second appearance in the show and secured another finish in under a minute without taking any damage.

The victory finally earned him a UFC contract from president Dana White, who only had the following words on his notes while watching the fight, “god damn.”

Henry Cejudo is ‘100 percent’ sure Bo Nickal can take down Khamzat Chimaev

During his post-fight interview, Nickal called out the top-ranked welterweight contender Chimaev for a bout. The hyped prospect has many believing he will wreak havoc in the promotion, and former UFC two-division champion Henry Cejudo agrees.

Bo Nickal says, ‘I want the Swedish princess, I want the guy that didn’t make weight. That’s the guy that I want.’ I just hope he shows up. It just shows his confidence,” Cejudo said (ht MMA Junkie). “Chimaev thinks he’s good in wrestling – his wrestling is nowhere near Bo Nickal, I can tell you that. “He can take down these UFC guys that have never wrestled. Try taking Bo Nickal down, and 100 percent I can see Bo Nickal easily taking down Khamzat Chimaev.”

Cejudo believes Nickal will surely be a champion

Cejudo is confident in what he has seen from Nickal so far and believes he will surely become a champion at 185-pounds.

“For those who don’t think Bo Nickal is the real deal, I’m going to tell you guys right now, as an Olympic champ, as a two-division champion, I don’t even wanna say prospect no more, I think it’s just pinning whenever this guy actually becomes champion at 185 pounds,” Cejudo said. “I think if you’re able to put him against Israel Adesanya now, just according to styles, Bo Nickal beats him. He puts him to his back, controls his wrists, grapples the heck out of him, and that’s all she wrote.”
