The long awaited grudge match between Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards and Jorge ‘Gamebred’ Masvidal was finally made, and will be taking place on an exciting fight card in December. Edwards is currently on a 9 fight win streak and has been demanding a title shot. The only fight he was considering taking was the Masvidal fight if the price was right. Well, the price must have been right as Edwards tweeted out “Millionaire” after agreeing to fight ‘Gamebred’ on December 11.
Former Middleweight champ turned analyst, Michael Bisping weighed in on the fight between the two, “It’s a very complicated web that has been weaved by the UFC. If Leon beats Masvidal, it’s gotta be a title fight… Of course, Masvidal is a massive star, Leon takes that star. But for that to happen, Usman has to beat Covington, which I think will happen” (Sportskeeda)
Coincidentally, both Masvidal and Edwards last defeat were by the hands of the champ, ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ Kamaru Usman. Masvidal lost both chances to claim gold against Usman, one by decision and the other by a devastating KO. Edwards lost to Usman back in 2015, when both fighters were just getting their feet wet in the UFC.
If Edwards wins against Masvidal it would be apparent that Edwards is the number 1 contender for the title. It is debatable whether or not he should be the one fighting Usman for the title in November. Instead, Usman will be fighting Covington in a rematch. Covington gave Usman the best fight to date, but Edwards has been the most dominant contender in the division. The questions we have about the division will be answered sooner rather than later.
Do you agree with Michael Bisping?Do you think Leon Edwards will be the next person to fight for the title?

When the news broke that Jorge Masvidal and Edwards were finally going to fight at UFC 269, the general consensus was that the top-ranked welterweights would be fighting for five rounds. The UFC has been doing for notable fights, like Edwards vs. Nate Diaz and Nick Diaz vs. Robbie Lawler. Nope, it is a regular three-round fight.
On Wednesday, Edwards spoke with MMA Fighting and revealed he asked the UFC for a five-round fight.
“The last three years, all he did was make excuses. I asked the UFC for a five-round fight with him, but I think he turned around and said he wanted three rounds. So that’s the reason that we’re at three rounds, you know, so either way, a fight is a fight,” Edwards told MMA Fighting.
Championship fighter
“Rocky,” said the reason he wanted five rounds was because he is a championship fighter and hasn’t been in a three-round fight in a while.
“I haven’t fought three rounds now for a while. I’m a championship fighter. My last five fights have been five rounds, so I am looking forward to going three. I can sprint at three [rounds] so, I’m looking forward to it,” Edwards said.
The last time Edwards was in a three-round fight was the night this beef with Masivdal started and got personal. He fought Gunnar Nelson in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night: Till vs. Masvidal, while “Gamebred” headlined the event. During Masvidal’s backstage post-fight interview, Edwards interrupted him, and all hell broke loose, which led to Masvidal striking him backstage.
“3 piece with soda” was born that night, and Edwards has been looking for revenge ever since.
Well, he will get his chance on Dec. 11 at UFC 269.
Edwards did not mince his words during his interview with MMA Fight.

Former two-division UFC champion Daniel Cormier believed Leon Edwards should have waited for a welterweight title shot instead of agreeing to fight Jorge Masvidal.
Edwards was last in action at UFC 263 in June. Against Nate Diaz, “Rocky” extended his unbeaten streak to 10 with a unanimous decision win. Despite a late surge from the Stockton native, which saw him rock the Englishman with less than a minute to go, Edwards controlled and dominated the fight for the best part of 24 minutes.
Having not lost since a 2015 defeat to current UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman, and beaten names like Donald Cerrone, former lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos, top-five contender Vicente Luque, and Diaz, many believe Edwards has done enough to secure his first championship opportunity in the UFC.
After considerable uncertainty surrounding the next steps of both Edwards and former title challenger Jorge Masvidal, the pair have finally agreed to meet inside the Octagon. It was recently announced that the fierce rivals will collide at UFC 269 on December 11.
In a recent episode of DC & RC, former heavyweight and light heavyweight kingpin Cormier advised Edwards not to give “Gamebred” something he didn’t provide him with when the Miami native was awaiting an opportunity at the belt.
“Why in the world should Leon Edwards now wanna look back to you guys? And I’m saying ‘you guys’ because Gilbert Burns, too. Gilbert Burns is guilty of this. [Masvidal and Burns] did not want to talk about Leon Edwards at all when they were the ones on the shortlist of a championship fight. Now, Leon is in that position and they wanna call him out. No, Leon. ‘Rocky,’ get the title shot that you so justly deserve. Don’t waste your time.” (h/t Sportskeeda)
Nevertheless, Edwards has given in to Masvidal’s callouts and ended their continuous ‘who ducked who?’ saga. While they look to secure a date with the champ, the welterweight title scene will move forward with a blockbuster rematch between Usman and Covington. The pair first clashed at UFC 245 in December 2019. After a competitive four rounds, “The Nigerian Nightmare” finished “Chaos” via TKO in the fifth frame.
After defending his gold against Burns and twice against Masvidal, Usman will now run it back with Covington at UFC 268 on November 6. The stacked pay-per-view will mark the promotion’s return to New York City’s prestigious Madison Square Garden.
With Burns’ victory over Stephen Thompson and the surging Luque making waves in the division, it remains to be seen whether a win over Edwards would be enough for Masvidal to secure a trilogy with Usman. Edwards, meanwhile, will almost certainly get his rematch with the champion if he can exact revenge on “Gamebred” for their 2019 backstage altercation.
Do you agree with Cormier? Should Leon Edwards have waited for a title shot instead of fighting Masvidal?

UFC welterweight rivals Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards will finally settle their beef in the octagon, as the two top welterweight contenders are targeted to faceoff at UFC 269 later this year, according to reports from Ariel Helwani and ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.
Masvidal is coming off of back-to-back losses to welterweight champion Kamaru Usman but is still hoping to get back in the title picture. Edwards was expected to be next in line for the title shot but will take a fight with Masvidal in the meantime.
The Masvidal vs. Edwards fight will take place just weeks after the Usman vs. Colby Covington title rematch at UFC 268. The winner, especially if Edwards comes out victorious, could get the next shot at the welterweight belt.
Masvidal and Edwards have quite a history with each other. Back in early 2019, the two got into a well-known verbal altercation that turned physical following a UFC card in London. This created the ‘three-piece and a soda’ moniker that Masvidal has thrived on ever since with the UFC fanbase.
It was originally expected that the Masvidal vs. Edwards fight talks had ended after Edwards recently posted a number of tweets seeming disinterested in a fight with Masvidal. This has changed in recent days and the two appear set on a collision course for the last UFC pay-per-view of 2021.
The fight will take place over three rounds and is on the same card as the women’s bantamweight title bout between Amanda Nunes and Julianna Pena. It will definitely be considered by some UFC fans as the ‘people’s main event’, similar to that of Nick Diaz vs. Robbie Lawler at UFC 266. The flyweight title between Brandon Moreno and Deiveson Figueiredo is expected to shift to the UFC 270 card to make way for Masvidal and Edwards.
What are your thoughts on Jorge Masvidal vs. Leon Edwards?

ESPN reported Wednesday that the UFC 269 bout between Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards is off due to a Masvidal injury.
There has been a pretty decent amount of interest in seeing Masvidal vs Edwards for a while. This all stemmed from a backstage incident at a Fight Night event, where the two scrapped backstage, birthing the infamous line from “Gamebred” and kicking off his meteoric rise in popularity.
This was viewed to be an important fight for both men, as Jorge Masvidal looks to stay relevant in the welterweight contender queue after suffering back-to-back losses to champion Kamaru Usman. As for Leon Edwards, he has been vying for his own title shot, but with Colby Covington next in line, this is the next best option for him to stay busy and have a big fight.
As the ESPN report states, there is currently no word on if the UFC will rebook the long-anticipated bout or if they will move in another direction. If the latter, it just so happens that Khamzat Chimaev is looking to fight in December, and he, too, was scheduled to face Leon Edwards in the past.
MMA News will keep you in the loop with any new updates on this developing story.
