With UFC 286 just over two weeks away, featherweight prospect Lerone Murphy is ready to go, but he still hasn’t found an opponent willing to step up.

After a substantial time away from the octagon, it seemed as though Murphy’s return to home soil was confirmed against his English counterpart Nathaniel Wood.

Although with a month to spare, Nathaniel Wood disappointingly announced that he had to pull out from the fight due to a sliced knee he suffered in training. Wood described it as a “freak accident” during wrestling practice, and says that movement in his knee is severely limited until his stitches are removed.

Based on Murphy’s recent tweet, he may not see it the same way Wood does.

Murphy’s last fight came in October of 2021, when he managed to knock out the highly experienced Makwan Amirkhani in the second round. He currently holds an 11-0-1 record featuring seven knockouts, with six of them coming in the very first round.

Lerone Murphy LowKickMMA Exclusive

Speaking in a recent interview with LowKickMMA’s Tim Wheaton, Murphy says he feels like he’s in ideal shape and on schedule with his weight cut.

Without any limitations on who he may stand across come March 18, Murphy says if it was up to him the obvious answer would be Conor McGregor. He praised McGregor’s legacy in the UFC and says he began watching the UFC during McGregor’s early featherweight dominance to stardom, stating:

“That’s the biggest fight in the world. Everyone knows that, no one needs to shy away from it.”

Murphy also previewed the exciting trilogy headlining the O2 arena for UFC 286 and backed his fellow countryman Leon Edwards to conclude his business with Kamaru Usman and come out with a victory. He believes that after the incredible run Usman managed at welterweight, running into the catastrophe that occurred in the final round against Edwards will determine his future.

“You’re not gonna come back the same fighter.”

He attributes his prediction to the massive advantage he could have in his home nation, and the elimination of the high altitude which Murphy believes may have gassed Edwards out in their previous matchup.

Murphy also believes that Usman should’ve taken at least one year off to recover from the shocking knockout at UFC 278.

Looking back at his own career, Murphy does not care who the UFC offers him, as long as he finds an opponent.

He rates himself highly among his featherweight company, and if he manages to find an opponent and convincing win on March 18, then he may very well find himself ranked among the top 15.

Murphy understands he is still human and has questioned himself just days away from fights before.

“Why did I pick this life?”

He has kept his head up despite the missing opponent he’s been looking for, and has kept a positive mindset by training as if his matchup was confirmed.

“With preparation comes confidence.”

Will someone step up in time to face Lerone Murphy?

Lerone Murphy ended up in the hospital after getting into a cycling accident.

Earlier today, the undefeated UFC featherweight took to Instagram to share a photo of himself in a hospital bed. Murphy opened up about why he was at the hospital and revealed that he could’ve suffered a more unfortunate fate had the medical assistance not been quickly available to respond.

“Ffs I can’t catch a break. Another near death experience ??. Yesterday while cycling, a oncoming car turned right without looking and we collided at speed. Which caused a nasty head wound ?The ambulance took 45minutes to arrive which nearly caused me to bleed out. Im here still breathing for a greater purpose clearly ???

Second near-death experience for Lerone Murphy

Murphy’s recent close encounter marks his second near-death experience. The 30-year-old Englishman was shot three times in a suburb of Manchester three years before he became a professional fighter. The bullets struck his face and neck. Murphy has cited the first incident as a source of motivation that turned his life around.

Remaining undefeated with 11 wins in 12 fights, Lerone Murphy will be looking to extend his win streak to four in his next fight. ‘The Miracle’ has racked up victories over Makwan Amirkhani, Douglas Silva de Andrade, and Ricardo Ramos in his last three outings. Having never tasted defeated, the closest he has come to dropping a bout was a draw with Zubaira Tukhugov.

Although his next fight has not been solidified yet, chances are he was hoping to land a spot on the card for UFC London given the home advantage he would enjoy. It remains to be seen whether Murphy will be able to recover in that time or will need to wait longer to get back to action inside the cage.

UFC featherweight Lerone Murphy has been left hospitalized following a high-speed collision with a car while out cycling.

Murphy boasts an unbeaten 11-0-1 professional record in MMA, which includes four Octagon triumphs. In his latest outing, the Englishman recorded a memorable knockout after connecting his knee to the head of Makwan Amirkhani at UFC 267.

But it seems that fans may not be seeing Murphy returning to the Octagon anytime soon. Earlier today, the 30-year-old detailed an accident that nearly left him bleeding out.

In an Instagram post, the Englishman posted an image of himself heavily bandaged in hospital, with a caption that explained how a car had pulled out and hit him at high speed while he was on a bicycle.

After a lengthy wait for medical attention, Murphy said a deep head wound caused by the accident led him fearing for his life.

This is not the first time Murphy has gone through a near-death experience. In May 2013, the Manchester native, then 21 years old, was shot by a gunman. After exiting a barber shop in his home city, the Brit was struck by three bullets, one in the face and two in the neck.

As a result of the attack, Murphy was forced to get prosthetic teeth and still has a small part of a bullet in his tongue.

Having survived that and now a nasty collision on the road, it’s safe to say that Murphy’s moniker, “The Miracle,” is beginning to fit his good fortune.

Lerone Murphy is excited to make his U.S. debut when he takes on Nate Landwher in Ohio on March 26 but is understandably disappointed not to be fighting at UFC London which will take place one week prior.

During a recent interview with LowKickMMA, Murphy spoke about the mixed emotions he is feeling ahead of his American debut which will go down on the undercard of Jan Blachowicz vs. Aleksandar Rakic in a couple of months’ time.

“That was the UFC’s decision really,” Murphy said about fighting in the U.S. one week after UFC London. “It’s mixed emotions for me. U.S debut in front of a crowd. It’s big. It’s massive. It’ll be good to fight in front of the U.S. fans and get my name out over there a bit. I’ve always dreamed of a home fight. Three UFC cards have been cancelled while I’ve been on the card, in London and they’ve not gone ahead.

“I’m a bit hurt about it, to be honest, but it is what it is,” Murphy added. “If I keep racking up the wins then I’ll be able to headline back in the U.K. so, I’ll be running the show.”

Murphy revealed he requested to fight in his home country but was told by the UFC that the card was full. ‘The Miracle Man’ thinks employers are simply scrambling to put on fights amid the ongoing global pandemic and that means not everyone gets to fight in their most desired location.

“I did ask for that card (UFC London) but we was told it was too full at the time,” Murphy said. “So, I don’t know who else is on the card and whatnot. I just think it’s because of all this COVID stuff and they just trying to put whoever they can put on wherever.”
