Kevin Lee has no shortage of confidence leading into his interim lightweight title fight with Tony Ferguson at UFC 216.

The winner will be one step closer in getting a coveted but elusive fight with Conor McGregor, who still holds the 155-pound belt.

Lee expressed his thoughts at a recent UFC 216 media event via MMA Fighting on the significance of the interim title he and Ferguson will be fighting for and how “The Notorious” factors into the equation:

“I think it already is for the real championship, People talk about that, like, Conor being, to me, he’s got to prove to me he’s ready to fight.

“As far as I’m concerned the man has lost three of his last four fights,” Lee said. “I don’t even think beat Nate Diaz the second time. I like a big challenge, so he’s gotta show me a little bit. He’s a small dude, too, he’s 145. He was getting out-wrestled by a dude who’s 40 years old and a boxer. He was getting him in the clinches and out-wrestling him. I mean, he was, he’s gotta show a little bit more than that to me.

“I mean it will be on my terms, It will be on my timetable. You know, I’m expecting to take this fight. I’m doing the hard work. I’m doing the heavy lifting. I’m fighting Tony. Nobody wanted to fight Tony. Conor didn’t want to fight Tony. It will be on my timetable, I’ll tell him when we gonna fight. If we fight on St. Patrick’s Day? Maybe. That might make some good business so I don’t know, I’ll see.”

Lee and Ferguson will settle their differences on October 7th in the main event of UFC 216. Meanwhile, McGregor is contemplating his next move after falling short against Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match in August.

McGregor has not defended the lightweight belt since winning it after TKOing Eddie Alvarez back at UFC 205.

Talks of a trilogy fight with Nate Diaz also hang in the balance, meaning the winner of the interim title is not guaranteed a shot at McGregor.

UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos has his next fight set.

According to UFC Fight Pass’s official Twitter account, dos Anjos will defend his 155-pound crown against #1 lightweight Eddie Alvarez:

RDA was originally scheduled to defend his title against Conor McGregor at UFC 196; however, an injury suffered in training camp caused him to pull out of the fight.

Prior to the injury, dos Anjos had separated from the stacked 155-pound field with dominant victories over former champion Anthony Pettis and previously surging Donald Cerrone.

Alvarez comes off of a split decision win over former lightweight champ Anthony Pettis this past January. The title bout is set for UFC fight pass on Thursday July 7th, just two days before UFC 200.

Bellator 58 Main Fight Card

Lightweight Championship bout: Eddie Alvarez (c) vs Michael Chandler

Can’t go against Alvarez. Chandler is an excellent fighter though. Reminds of Jake Ellenberger. Chandler is a very good fighter with all around skills, just lacking everything against Alvarez though. If the odds are totally outrageous, then Chandler wouldn’t be the worst upset play. Thinking Alvarez via decision.

Alvarez is -260 and Chandler is +200 at Intertops, so the odds aren’t terrible here. Says a lot about Chandler’s skills.

Catchweight (95lb) bout: Hector Lombard vs Trevor Prangley

Hector Lombard definitely will win, but if you like playing upsets, the odds are probably ridiculously one sided for this one. Prangley though can take a punch. However, thinking Lombard via TKO.

Yep Lombard is -800 and Prangley is +500 at Intertops

Featherweight bout: Marlon Sandro vs Rafael Dias

Marlon Sandro 3rd round TKO.

Sandro is -450 and Dias is +320 at Intertops

Women’s (5 lbs) bout: Jessica Aguilar vs Lisa Ellis-Ward

Bellator 58 Undercard

Middleweight bout: Brett Cooper vs Jared Hess

I lean towards Cooper. He became famous by KO’ing IFL star Rory Markham as a replacement fighter back in 2007. Hess also tasted success as a champion in a 3rd tier fight promotion. This fight should be excellent. If Cooper can’t finish Hess could probably win on points. I think Cooper has a shot though.

Prediction: Hess via decision

Main Card

Welterweight Championship bout: Nick Diaz (c) vs Paul Daley

Its no secret, I’ve made it known on this blog, that the Diaz brothers are in my favorite fighters of all time list. Nick Diaz can take punches and Paul Daley can deliver them. Diaz also a puncher, but he is the kind that wears you down with a relentless pace. Frank Shamrock has said the punches hurt even though they don’t look like there is anything on them. When Jake Shields fought Paul Daley he quickly took him down and submitted him via armbar. I expect the same scenario from Nick Diaz. However, Diaz won’t take him down so quickly. The reason is because he wants to put on a show, like he always does and show Daley who the champ is.

Pretty much the only way Daley stops Diaz is by KO. Daley doesn’t have a good record going the distance and his takedown defense better have improved because imo, as good as Jake Shields is on the ground, Nick Diaz is right there with him. They train together so maybe that’s why?!

Nick Diaz can win this in the first round if he wants to, so I’m taking Diaz easily.

Lightweight Championship bout: Gilbert Melendez (c) vs Tatsuya Kawajiri

Both of these guys are straight wrestlers from the beginning of their careers. However, Melendez has a better all around game. Kawajiri hasn’t fought well on US soil and I’m thinking Melendez wins this one via decision. Kawajiri is very tough and can absorb punishment and I think he will be a sponge and absorb all Gilbert Melendez puts on him.

Light Heavyweight bout: Gegard Mousasi vs Keith Jardine

I’m going with the upset here and taking Jardine. The reasons are Mousasi hasn’t fought a guy like Jardine and he doesn’t fight guys as big as Jardine regularly. However, Jardine has fought bigger guys before and has excellent cardio. I think Jardine has enough striking and ground game to give Mousasi problems. More particularly is that this is a 3 round fight. This is important because when Mo Lawal fought Mousasi, Lawal was very aggressive and Gegard was fighting backwards and had trouble. Jardine is a very aggressive fighter and i think in 3 rounds, Gegard may not have enough time to turn the fight around.

Lightweight bout: Shinya Aoki vs Lyle Beerbohm

Shinya Aoki is a submission specialist and I’m not sure that term is enough to describe him because that is pretty much all he does. He has weak kicks and crappy punches, but his submission game is top notch. He is an expert at getting his opponents in completely vulnerable positions where he can either pound out a win or submit the guy. Lyle Beerbohm on the other hand is a wrestling specialist and a grinder. He is excellent at escaping submissions and reversals. His striking is better than Aoki’s as well.

I don’t see Aoki winning this fight and am going with the underdog Beerbohm.
