The card for Bellator 183 is shaping up to be a stellar one as a significant welterweight bout has been booked for the event. Bellator MMA officials have announced that Paul Daley will take on Lorenz Larkin.

Bellator officials confirmed the bout following an initial report from The Telegraph.

Daley (39-15-2) is coming off a second-round submission loss to Rory MacDonald in the main event of Bellator 179 in May. It was a one-sided loss, to say the least, but now the British fighter looks to rebound against a fighter he apparently doesn’t think very highly of.

“Larkin is overrated,” Daley told The Telegraph. “I think that I gave Douglas Lima more of a fight when we fought. I brought it to him 100 percent. I don’t feel like Larkin did that. Not to mention, I don’t think Lima feared Larkin, and as a result, he underperformed. I think even Rory [MacDonald] feared me standing up. Granted, he has the superior ground skills, but he feared a stand-up exchange with me. Let’s see what Larkin does in San Jose.”

On the flip side, Larkin (18-6), who moved over to Bellator from the UFC earlier this year as a free agent, was given a 170-pound title shot against champion Douglas Lima in his promotional debut at Bellator NYC in June. However, he suffered a unanimous-decision loss.

“From the get-go with Scott [Coker], I made it clear that I want to stay active and get right back in there following my fights,” Larkin said. “After Bellator NYC I got a call, and I was chomping at the bit to take another high-level, competitive fight, and right now, Paul [Daley] is that guy.”

Bellator 183 is set to take place at SAP Center in San Jose, California on September 23rd. The main card airs on Spike TV while the preliminary card will air online. As of this writing, the bout order hasn’t been finalized. Here is the updated card:

Benson Henderson vs. Patricky Freire

Javy Ayala vs. Roy Nelson

Paul Daley vs. Lorenz Larkin

Aaron Pico vs. opponent TBA

Top prospect Lorenz Larkin had no easy introduction to the Bellator MMA fans after deciding to become a free agent and sign with Bellator. He had to go up against the best welterweight in Bellator, Douglas Lima. The two fighters fought in the opening bout on the main card of Bellator NYC on pay-per-view at Madison Square Garden for the welterweight title.

The first round was nothing spectacular as they had a feeling out process with leg kicks being the only thing that was really happening between these two fighters. Lima landed an uppercut that backed Larkin into the cage, and they end the round in the clinch.

Both fighters started to let their hands go in the second round, which led to fireworks in the middle of the round. Larkin blasted Lima with a right hand in an exchange, but Lima backed off and fired back with a left hook that floored Larkin, who somehow survived the brogue of strikes. Round three was nothing to write home about. Both fighters stayed calm as it seemed they were trying to recover from the previous round. Larkin was moving well, but he was not letting his hands go at all. On the other side, Lima was pressing forward but couldn’t get close to land anything.

Larkin turned up the pressure and found better angles to attack from in round four. Lima continued to struggle with his range and Larkin was just counter striking him. Lima did score a trip takedown but was not able to hold it as Larkin got back to his feet with seconds left in the round. In the fifth and final round of their title fight, both fighters started to turn up the pressure as the clock was ticking. In the end, the judges gave the win to Lima by unanimous decision. Lima is still the Bellator welterweight champion.

This was Larkin’s biggest fight of his career, to say the least. Larkin now holds a pro-MMA record of 18-6-1.

Lima continues to impress. Leading into this event, Bellator MMA President Scott Coker came out and stated that Lima was the best welterweight in the world. Lima is not someone to doubt as he has only lost two bouts under the Bellator banner since making his debut in 2011. Lima has racked up 28 career wins. What is impressive by that number is that 24 of those wins came by either KO or submission.

Douglas Lima def. Lorenz Larkin via unanimous decision (50-45, 48-47, 48-47)

Bellator 180: Douglas Lima vs Lorenz Larkin Will Be A Striker’s Delight

Perhaps my most anticipated fight on this card, Douglas Lima versus Lorenz Larkin is a truly wonderful match up between two strikers with very different styles. We have the bare bones approach of Douglas Lima against the flashier yet effective strikes of Lorenz Larkin. While there are many other intriguing fights on this card, this could easily be the main event.

In Douglas Lima’s most recent outing he scored a come from behind victory against former Bellator welterweight champion Andrey Koreshkov. After a competitive first frame, Lima found himself on his back in the second round, yet he obviously never lost hope. Against Koreshkov we saw improvement in his ground game in order to get back to his feet in the first round, but seemed content to lay on his back in the second. Nevertheless, it was Lima’s game changing weapon that ultimately won him the belt, the left hook.

But like every season striker should understand, setting up your Sunday punch should be done in strategic fashion. First off, Lima should want to focus on utilizing his jab to both track the faster Larkin as well as set a pattern to fire off hard shots once he closes the distance. Lima should also look to use his second favorite weapon, the leg kick. His rear leg kick works wonders to punish the legs of an opponent and should do well here as Larkin is a fighter who tends to constantly be on his bicycle. To slow down Larkin’s movement this should be Lima’s main weapon. Once he slows down Larkin with kicks he should look to fire his left hook which could ruin Larkin’s debut in spectacular fashion. But the jab to the leg kick should be key.

In his first fight since leaving the UFC, Lorenz Larkin finds himself in an immediate title fight. It could be alarming to some, but when you consider the fact that Larkin was on a hot streak in the UFC, coupled with the fact that he’s an exciting striker, it’s easy to see why the Bellator execs pushed for this fight. Larkin fights in an extremely interesting and unexpected manner. You wouldn’t call his striking Muay Thai nor could you call it karate or kickboxing. He strikes with a flair all his own.

While already mapping out that Lima should use his jab and leg kick to win the day, Lorenz Larkin should be taking a somewhat similar approach. The only difference is that he has more tools to work with. He should utilize his low calf kick to the legs to set up his left hook right straight combination. But before unloading, he should use his well polish oblique kick and mix it in with his leg kick. The chamber he uses for both kicks are fairly similar and if utilized correctly will keep Lima guessing on what shot is coming next.

This will undoubtedly be one of the more exciting match ups of the night and will be an absolute strikers delight.

Who do you think walks away the Bellator welterweight champion?

Douglas “Phenom” Lima will have to defend his title in front of a massive crowd in one of the most illustrious venue’s of the sport at Bellator 180. This is the 29 year olds second run as champion and this is the going to be his first test to hold onto the championship. His contender is no slouch, if Lima wants to carry on as champion then he first has to deal with the brute strength and strike force of none other than Lorenz Larkin. To make things even harder for the Phenow, Larkin is coming into this fight hot! The last four of his five fights have been comfortable wins and on the sole occasion that he did lose, it turned out to be via a rather speculative split decision. This loss came at the hands of Albert Tumenov and a lot of people are still of the opinion that the judges got this one wrong.

Larkin is an underrated fighter who on paper is actually surprisingly good with a win ratio of 75%. A good 11 of his 18 victories have come via knockouts. However, Lima’s numbers are even better. Lima has a win ratio of 82% and has got a fair number of knockouts under his belt too. However, the one area where Lima does have the edge is certainly on the ground. He is really good at Jiu-Jitsu and has 11 submissions to his name. Having said that, it is no doubt that Lima will be trying to get the fight to the mat as often as possible, but Larkin has a great reach and is going to be expecting take downs. If there is a hard fight to call in this fight card, it is probably this one. If we HAD TO pick a winner, then we would thing Lima will take this by unanimous decision.
