Next weekend, “The Last Emperor” Fedor Emelianenko (32-4) will look to prove he still knows how to win fights, squaring off against the fellow MMA veteran Jeff Monson in the main event of M-1 Global’s “Battle of Legends” in Moscow, Russia. The event will mark Emelianenko’s first bout in Russia since the BodogFights encounter with the now-retired Matt Lindland.

The “black stripe” of Fedor Emelianenko‘s career started back in June of 2009 with what was then a shocking defeat to Fabricio Werdum in just 60 seconds. The negative streak continued with a painful-to-watch TKO loss to the “Bigfoot”Antonio Silva, and the latest disappointment just a few months ago against Dan “Hendo” Henderson.

Against Jeff Monson, Fedor and his team hope for a different outcome.

The main part of Emelianenko’s training camp for Jeff Monson took place in Special Sports Gym in Amstelveen, Netherlands (20 minutes from Amsterdam). I had an exciting opportunity to interview Fedor Emelianenko in Netherlands (3 hours by train from my home, up north in Groningen), ahead of what could easily be the most important fight of his illustrious MMA career. Visibly reenergized Emelianenko shared about his plans for the fight with Jeff Monson, and what he’s been concentrating on in this training camp

“I don’t like to talk about other fighter’s weaknesses. That’s something we’ll be able to find out during the fight,” he said. ”Jeff Monson is physically strong, and has a very good ground game, with both wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He’s a game opponent.”

The promotion announced on Thursday that the event will be carried by iN Demand, DIRECTV, DISH Network and Avail-TVN for “a suggested retail price of $29.95.” The event will air live from Olympic Arena in Moscow, Russia, at 7:30 a.m. ET / 4:30 a.m. PT.

Emelianenko (32-4, 1 NC) will look to snap his three-fight losing streak when he meets “The Snowman” in his home country. “The Last Emperor” hasn’t won since Nov. 2009 when he defeated Brett Rogers via second-round TKO. Since then, he dropped fights to Fabricio Werdum, Antonio Silva and Dan Henderson.

The 40-year-old Monson (43-12) is 9-1 in his last 10 fights. He most recently defeated Paul Taylor via first-round submission after losing to Daniel Cormier in his Strikeforce debut in June.

The co-main event will feature M-1 Challenge lightweight champion Jose Figueroa (10-4) defending his belt against Daniel Weichel (27-7).

Also scheduled for the PPV card is: Aleksander Yakoviev (12-3) vs. Juan Manuel Suarez (8-0), Mairbek Taisumov (15-3) vs. Josh Thorpe (10-6), and Arthur Guseinov (9-2) vs. Xavier Foupa-Pokam (21-16).

M-1 Challenge 27 Results: Vinny Magalhaes Retains Belt with Third-Round TKO

It didn’t come the way most expected, but M-1 Global light-heavyweight champion Vinny Magalhaes successfully defended his championship, scoring a third-round TKO at 3:13 of the third round.

Magalhaes, a jiu-jitsu star who just last month won the gold medal at the Abu Dhabi Combat Club submission wrestling world championships in his weight class, came into the fight with seven of his eight career victories by way of submission. And though he threatened at several moments of the fight, the end came after he slammed opponent Mikhail Zayats with a head kick, then finished him with ground strikes to force a referee stoppage.

It was the fifth straight win for Magalhaes, who is now 9-5-1.

Zayats had his moments, particularly in the standup, where he nailed Magalhaes with a series of leg kicks throughout the duration of the bout. But Magalhaes came alive in the third to pull out the win in the main event of a show held at Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix.

In an interim heavyweight championship fight, Kenny Garner outlasted Maxim Grishin in a fifth-round submission due to strikes. It was a bout that saw both men battle through exhaustion before Grishin could take no more with just 53 seconds left in the five-round affair.

The fight was somewhat marred by some bizarre problems, including a shortened round when the ringside clock operator did not heed the referee’s timeout signal, referee positioning errors on restarts from under the ropes, and Grishin’s near-refusal to get back to his feet near the end of round four.

Amazingly, Grishin nearly came back to win, nearly locking Garner in an armbar before Garner pulled free and blasted his way tot the victory. Garner (8-3) is expected to next face current heavyweight champion Guram Gugenishvili, who injured his elbow just last week. Gugenishvili is undefeated at 11-0.

The other three main card fights all ended in a flash. In the opener, Daniel Madrid defeated Tom Gallichio via armbar in just 48 seconds. Then, Yasubey Enomoto topped Josh Thorpe with a triangle in 67 seconds, and not to be outdone, Arthur Guseinov finished off Eddie Arizmendi with a heel hook submission in just 50 seconds.

Main Card Results
Vinny Magalhaes def. Mikhail Zayats via TKO (strikes) – Round 3 (1:13)
Kenny Garner def. Maxim Grishin via submission (strikes) – Round 5 (4:07)
Arthur Guseinov def. Eddie Arizmendi via submission (heel hook) – Round 1 (0:50)
Yasubey Enomoto def. Josh Thorpe via submission (triangle) – Round 1 (1:07)
Daniel Madrid def. Tom Gallicchio via submission (armbar) – Round 1 (0:48)

M-1 Global returns to Showtime Friday night, and once again, the card has received little to no fanfare or press.

The card will feature former TUF finalist Vinny Magalhaes (8-5), perhaps the most well-known fighter on the M-1 Global roster, defending his light heavyweight title against Mikhail Zayats (14-5).

Magalhaes has won four in a row and six of his last seven fights since losing to Eliot Marshall at UFC 97, while Zayats also enters the title fight riding a four-fight winning streak.

M-1 heavyweight champion Guram Gugenishvili (11-0) was scheduled to defend his title against Kenny Garner (7-3) on the card but was forced to pull out of the fight after suffering an elbow injury in training. This marks the second fight in a row that Gugenishvili has withdrawn from, as he missed his July 8 title defense against Pat Bennett due to another injury. Maxim Grishin (11-5) will now face Garner for the promotion’s interim heavyweight title in the co-main event.

This marks the promotion’s third event on Showtime with one remaining on its current contract with the premium cable network.

M-1 Challenge 27 will air on Showtime Friday night at 11 p.m. ET/PT. Mauro Ranallo and Pat Miletich will call the action from Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix, AZ.

Below is a look at the entire card.

Televised card:
Vinny Magalhaes (c) vs. Mikhail Zayats — M-1 Global light heavyweight title fight
Maxim Grishin vs. Kenny Garner — M-1 Global interim heavyweight title fight
Eddie Arizmendi vs. Arthur Guseinov
Tom Gallicchio vs. Daniel Madrid
Yasubey Enomoto vs. Josh Thorpe

Prelims:
David Morgan vs Silvester Villereal
Mike Chavez vs Joe Martinez

M-1 Global Light Heavyweight Champion, Vinny Magalhaes competes against Mikhail Zayats at M-1 Challenge XXVII tournament this Friday, October 14th, is more concerned about not breaking his win streak than maintaining his title..but essentially it’s the same thing.

Cage Warriors promotion getting with the times by implementing blood testing (My God, they weren’t testing before? WTF! Those guys could have gotten the herp or HIV and they probably only get $300 to fight. That doesn’t even cover a year’s supply of VALTREX, not that I would know this…) and possible steroid testing.

Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal to add KJ Noons vs. Billy Evangelista to December 17th card.

UFC plans to move pay-per-view times back to 10pm (ET) and 7pm (PT) possibly due to a slump in ppv buys. The new-old time slot (or “classic” time slot to those of you who recall the failure of New Coke) will start with UFC 141.

M-1 Global officials have confirmed that Fedor Emelianenko will return to action against Jeff Monson, November 20th at an M-1 Global event in Moscow. Both fighters have signed contracts for the match, which is expected to take place at Moscow’s Olympic Stadium.

It will be Fedor’s first fight in his home country since his first-round submission of Matt Lindland at BodogFIGHT: Clash of the Nations in April 2007. Fedor entered that fight on a streak of 23 fights without a loss. Now he finds himself trying to pull the emergency brake on a three-fight losing skid. As for Monson, he most recently lost a decision to Daniel Cormier in June.

M-1 Global has reportedly been in negotiations with Showtime Sports to broadcast the event on Showtime.
