It’s a fight that Dan Henderson discussed prior to ever signing with Strikeforce, so the promotion’s reigning light-heavyweight champion would gladly temporarily move up a division to accept a match with Russian legend Fedor Emelianenko.

Henderson’s manager Aaron Crecy told MMA Fighting that while the fighter has yet to receive an offer for the bout, Strikeforce did ask for confirmation he would take the fight before beginning talks with Emelianenko’s M-1 team. Those discussions remain ongoing, but as far as Henderson’s concerned, he’ll take the fight at any weight class.

“Dan has indicated he’d love to have the fight and he hasn’t shied away from that,” Crecy said. “He’d love to have the fight, and have it at heavyweight. He’s happy to challenge Fedor there.”

Despite good television numbers for its debut outing as a solo promoter on Showtime cable, foreign fight organization M-1 Global had a tough time at the gate, drawing just over 1,000 fans for its recent Virginia show.

Mary Broz-Vaughan, a director of communications for the agency that oversees the state’s MMA regulation, told MMA Fighting that M-1 Challenge 24: Damkovsky vs. Figueroa, drew 1,007 paid fans for a live gate of $30,650.

The event, which took place at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, was the first of four shows to be broadcast on the premium network, as first reported by MMA Fighting.

A former Ultimate Fighter contestant made short work of an overmatched opponent, and two M-1 champions were crowned, as M-1 had its first live event on Showtime Friday night.

The card was an important one for M-1, marking the first time the promotion got on premium cable without needing to put Fedor Emelianenko on the card and co-promote with Strikeforce, and for the most part the fights delivered: This wasn’t the kind of high-quality MMA fans get with major UFC and Strikeforce shows, but the bouts were generally entertaining.

Vinny Magalhaes, known for making it to the final of Season 8 of The Ultimate Fighter, was by far the best-known fighter on the card. Magalhaes completely outclassed Jake Doerr, taking Doerr’s back on the ground easily, sinking in a body triangle and landing punches until the referee stopped the fight, handing Magalhaes a first-round TKO victory.

After a few times out as a U.S. co-promoter, M-1 Global hosts its first televised, stateside solo outing on Showtime on Friday night. The event, M-1 Challenge XXIV, is one of four on a new TV deal as the European company tries to move past being known solely as Fedor Emelianenko‘s promoter.

That day is still a while off though, as long as Emelianenko is around. And despite losing his second straight, Strikeforce expects to bring the Russian great back into the fold for a summer return, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker told MMA Fighting.
