Marlon Chito Vera vs. Cory Sandhagen

Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera already has his first challenger in mind should he leave UFC 299 with the bantamweight world title wrapped around his waist.

Emanating from Kaseya Arena in sunny Miami, Florida on March 9, Vera will be the first man to challenge the reigning and defending 135-pound king, Sean O’Malley. The bout will serve as a rematch of their August 2020 meeting when ‘Chito’ shocked fight fans, scoring a first-round TKO against ‘Sugar’ after sending him crashing to the canvas with a well-placed leg kick.

Should Vera once again see his hand raised against O’Malley, the Ecuadorian knockout artist will immediately request to run it back with the last man to beat him inside the Octagon, Cory Sandhagen.

“I will ask for Sandhagen because he beat me,” Vera told The Schmo. “That’s the only reason I will choose that fight. The winner of Merab (Dvalishvili) and Henry (Cejudo) is also a big fight, and the UFC knows, whoever they pick I will (fight). But if I had to choose myself, I want to kick Cory’s ass. I know his dorky ass is crying about it, but it’s not my fault no one gives a f*ck about him.”

‘The Sandman’ snapped Vera’s four-fight win streak in March, earning a split decision victory. In the eyes of many, that made Sandhagen much more deserving of a title opportunity than Vera, but ‘Chito’ recognizes that the history between himself and O’Malley is what ultimately scored him a shot at UFC gold.

“The only reason this fight is happening is because I beat him,” Vera said. “That’s the only reason the fight is happening. So, I’m glad it came out like that. This is the best moment to do it, title fight, and I’m excited to become a world champion soon(h/t MMA Junkie).

Aljamain Sterling plots his next two title defenses after TJ Dillashaw: “There’s a couple of wildcards”

Aljamain Sterling will defend his bantamweight title against TJ Dillashaw at UFC 280. Never one to overlook his opponents, Sterling has devoted his attention to his upcoming matchup, however, the champion could foresee two potential opponents he may have to face in his near future if he is able to emerge victorious.

In a division overwhelmed with talent, it is probably not the worst idea to be aware of the rising contenders attempting to take your spot on the top of the throne just as Aljamain Sterling has done.

Although ‘Funk Master’ could see potential wildcard plays be thrown in his direction such as Deiveson Figueiredo if he were to jump up to the 135-pound division. As well as a matchup with former two-division champion Henry Cejudo if he were to make good on his promises and return to the sport.

As it stands Sterling believes Chito Vera and Sean O’Malley are in pole positions currently to earn themselves a shot at the bantamweight strap.

“There’s a couple of wildcards like Din Thomas just mentioned. You’ve got Deiveson Figueiredo potentially coming up to 135 [pounds]. You got Cejudo kinda waiting in the wings somewhere, around there, doing his thing.”

“But I think for me, it comes down to the best matchup, the best performances, and I think right now ‘Chito’s’ definitely the front-runner,” he continued. “After I get past T.J., because I don’t want to look past him, I get the job done. I think whoever has the best performance, it might be a ‘Sugar’ show, it might be a ‘Chito’ show. I’m not sure which one yet.” Aljamain Sterling said on UFC Live. (Transcribed by MiddleEasy)

Aljamain Sterling predicts a future matchup with either Chito Vera or Sean O’Malley

It could well be that Sterling is spot on with his thought process about who his next potential title defence could be against. Chito Vera has earned emerged as a serious contender within the bantamweight division and was able to emphasize that with his expertly delivered knockout of Dominic Cruz last month.

O’Malley, on the other hand, does not quite have the same resume standards as Vera but if he were able to overcome former interim champion, Petr Yan, at UFC 280 he stakes a very good claim for himself to be next in line for a shot at the title.

Do you think Aljamain Sterling will successfully defend his title against TJ Dillashaw at UFC 280?

It appears that Marlon Vera will have a chance to get one back from early in his UFC career. He will fight Davey Grant in a rematch scheduled for June.

The bantamweight lost the unanimous decision in his second fight in the UFC to Davey Grant at UFC Fight Night 84 in 2016. Several outlets report that he will get the rematch at a UFC Fight Night event scheduled for June 19th.

Since their first meetup, Vera has remained active. He’s fought 13 times since and put together a 9-4 record. He’s been most successful when he has kept it out of the judges’ hands, with eight of his nine victories coming by knockout or submission. Most notably, he holds a TKO victory over rising star Sean O’Malley. In his last outing, he lost a decision to former featherweight king Jose Aldo. Many anticipated a rematch with O’Malley, but Vera has shared that O’Malley declined the fight.

For his part, Grant has been less active. Since his first meeting with Vera, he’s had five appearances in the octagon and amassed a 3-2 record. He is currently on a three-win fight streak with two back-to-back finishes. Recently, he earned a knockout victory and Performance of the Night honors against Jonathan Martinez at UFC Fight Night 187.

The full card for this event is not yet available. But, it’s rumored that the card will also feature Dan Ige versus ‘The Korean Zombie’ Chang Sung Jung as the main event.

Do you think Marlon Vera will avenge his loss to Davey Grant on June 19?

UFC 238 Countdown

Former Bantamweight title challenger Marlon Moraes has become a new target from contender Marlon “Chito” Vera as he attempts to work his way up the Bantamweight rankings.

Taking to Twitter, Chito suggested to the UFC that he should face Moraes next to which Moraes apperaed to be onboard with, however, he did not seem to expect this to be next for Vera.

“Give o’Maley his well deserved rematch. By the time I will be back n we meet.”

Both fighters are coming off losses on 2020’s final December 19 card. In the co-main event, Vera took on the former Featherweight champion Jose Aldo losing out via decision after three hard-fought rounds. Earlier in the night, Moraes took on another veteran in Rob Font who was able to find the finish via TKO early in the first.

For Moraes, this comes as his second back to back loss by KO in 2020. Before this, Moraes took a victory against Jose Aldo by controversial decision in his Bantamweight debut.

Before his face-off against Aldo, Vera took out highly praised prospect Sean O’Malley. In the first round, Vera was able to compromise O’Malley’s leg with a low kick that eventually led to a takedown that would close the show.

Regardless of Moraes’s suggestion that the pair rematch, Vera did not entertain the idea simply replying to Moraes stating that he should just say no if he isn’t interested in the matchup.

Currently, as it stands Vera is sitting at number 15 in the rankings with no movement from his most recent loss, while Moraes has fallen four places from number three to number seven, one rank below the aforementioned Aldo.

As it stands the UFC has not shared any interest in a matchup between the pair publicly, however, with the Bantamweight division as stacked as it is, we could potentially see the pair face off in 2021.

UFC Bantamweight Marlon “Chito” Vera has been on an upward trajectory in his career since putting together seven bantamweight wins in a row and looks to be eyeing a title shot after facing Jose Aldo at UFCVegas17.

During the virtual media day for the event, Chito shared that he believes a win over an athlete such as Aldo warrants his name being put forward into the title conversation.

“Yeah, 100 percent, that’s the idea of asking for one of these fights,” Vera told MMA Junkie in Spanish. A victory over someone like him, it puts me directly in line to fight for the belt,” (Translated & Transcribed by MMA Junkie).

“He was coming off a title fight, which on the business end if I beat someone who’s coming off a title loss, that puts me in line. We asked for him, Edgar or Cruz, and I got him. So I’m happy about the opportunity. I’m prepared, and I can’t wait to do my job.”

Aldo most recently fought back in July in a fight that saw him contend for the vacant Bantamweight title against Petr Yan. After four rounds Yan was able to take Aldo out in the fifth and secure himself the championship. Following this, there were questions of what would be next for the Brazilian who had originally competed and been a long-time reigning champion in the UFC’s Featherweight division.

As for Chito, back in August at UFC 252 he took on the rising star Sean O’Malley in the co-main event of the PPV. Vera was able to take O’Malley out with a finish that saw some controversy, however, this dominant performance saw himself in line for another big name such as Aldo.

In the co-main event of the final UFC event for 2020, Chito looks to take his final victory of the year and set himself up for a massive 2021.

After losing a controversial decision in his Bantamweight debut, Jose Aldo was granted a title shot against Petr Yan for the vacant Bantamweight title. After a competitive start to the fight, Yan started to edge forward eventually taking Aldo out by TKO in round five.
