Rafael Fiziev suffered an unfortunate knee injury in the second round of his UFC Vegas 79 main event with Mateusz Gamrot.

The opening round went pretty much how fight fans expected, with Rafael Fiziev attempting to land heavy shots while Gamrot worked to get things to the ground. Neither fighter was able to impose their will in the first five minutes, but Fiziev managed to land some solid strikes whilst avoiding the takedown attempts of Gamrot which likely earned him the round.

Tragically, the second round would bring an anti-climactic end to the bout when Fiziev threw a right kick near the two-minute mark. ‘Ataman’ appeared to pop his left knee in the process which immediately sent him crashing to the canvas and grimacing in pain. Gamrot moved in, but the referee quickly recognized that something was wrong and called a stop to the bout less than halfway through the round.

Official Results: Mateusz Gamrot def. Rafael Fiziev via TKO (injury) at 2:03 of Round 2.

Returning to an Apex facility setting following recent trips ‘Down Under’ to Sydney, Australia and across the state to the T-Mobile Arena in Nevada, the Octagon houses a blockbuster lightweight scrap between fan-favorite contenders, Rafael Fiziev and Mateusz Gamrot this weekend atop a UFC Vegas 79 card.

Attempting to rebound from his high-stakes UFC 286 co-headliner loss back in March in a trip to London, England, Fiziev most recently saw his impressive six-fight winning run halted by former interim lightweight champion turned symbolic BMF championship winner, Justin Gaethje in a close, majority decision loss.

As for Gamrot, the former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion under the banner of European outfit, KSW, looks to improve on his number seven rank in the division in just his second headliner under the UFC banner, last time outlasting Jalin Turner en route to a short-notice split decision win at UFC 285 back in March.

Start Time

The start time for UFC Vegas 79: Rafael Fiziev vs. Mateusz Gamrot at the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada currently sees the preliminary card kick off at 4 p.m. ET – with the main card of the event slated to begin at 7 p.m. ET as the Octagon returns to ‘Sin City’.

Rafael Fiziev vs. Mateusz Gamrot Betting Odds at UFC Vegas 79

Despite his close majority decision loss to striking sensation, Gaethje back in March, Tiger Muay Thai ace, Fiziev is closing impressively as a -160 over with Betway to defeat Gamrot – with the Pole himself taking money at odds currently placing him as a +130 betting underdog.

And with punters clearly splashing out on Kazakhstan-born striker, Fiziev to emege with a victory over Gamrot in their return to the Octagon this weekend, the former had notched impressive victories including finishes of Renato Moicano, and Brad Riddell, before stopping former undisputed lightweight champion, Rafael dos Anjos in his UFC headlining event.

As for Gamrot, beyond an Octagon debut loss to Guram Kutateladze, and a recent unanimous decision loss to perennial contender, Beneil Dariush, the Polish wrestling star has landed notable wins of his own over the likes of Jeremy Stephens, as well as the highly-touted, Arman Tsarukyan, and most recently, the previously noted, Turner.

Also of note on the main card, Arkansas grappling talent, Bryce Mitchell makes his first walk since dropping his promotional-perfect record to incoming title challenger, Ilia Topuria, taking on stalwart, Dan Ige.

Fiziev, the current number six ranked lightweight contender, has been sidelined since he co-headlined UFC 286 back in March in London, England, suffering a close, majority decision loss to former interim lightweight champion, Justin Gaethje. The defeat came as Fiziev’s second under the promotion’s banner following an impressive run of six consecutive victories.

As for Gamrot, the number seven rated challenger – who held both featherweight and lightweight gold under the banner of KSW, most recently turned in a split decision win over Jalin Turner at UFC 285 in March to boot, drafting in on short notice.

Rafael Fiziev makes Octagon return against Mateusz Gamrot in September

ESPN MMA reporter, Brett Okamoto was first to report the pairing of Rafael Fiziev and Mateusz Gamrot, as per UFC president, Dana White.

“UFC Fight Night, Sept. 23 … per Dana White,” Okamoto tweeted. “No. 6 Rafael Fiziev vs. No. 7 Matuesz Gamrot.”

12-2 as a professional Kazakhstan-born lightweight striker, Fiziev had suffered a prior first round TKO defeat to Magomed Mustafaev in his Octagon debut back in 2019.

Mateusz Gamrot def. Jalin Turner via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 30-27)

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned to us tonight, March 4, 2023, for UFC 285, headlined by back-to-back title fights showcasing the return of former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones and former interim UFC heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane, as well as UFC flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko, who faces no. 6 ranked Alexa Grasso in attempt to make the eighth successful defense of her title in the co-main event of the evening.

Our second bout on the main card tonight came at 155 lbs between a pair of contenders in no. 7 ranked former KSW champ-champ Mateusz Gamrot and the surging no. 10 ranked Jalin Turner.

Gamrot lost his most recent fight to current no. 4 ranked Beneil Dariush, a fight he went into on a three-fight finish streak, while Turner came into tonight’s bout on a five-fight finish streak of his own.

Round one

Gamrot secures a takedown about two minutes into the opening round, though Turner works back to his feet shortly thereafter. He’s still being pressed into the fence, but breaks the clinch with a nicely timed knee to the body followed by a two-punch combination.

Round two

Gamrot lands a nice right hand to the body to begin the second, and he’s beginning to pick Turner apart with his leg kicks.

Turner then lands a stunning right hand that hurts Gamrot, and follows it up with some more crisp punches for the next minute, as well as some nasty body kicks.

Gamrot catches one of those body kicks however and takes Turner back down, ending the final 90 seconds of the second in top position.

Round three

Gamrot’s wrestling-heavy attack continues to work for him into the final stretch, as he takes Turner down at the beginning, and end of the round once again. Turner was able to land some effective strikes in the middle there, but he wasn’t able to keep Gamrot off him and it cost him the win.

Mateusz Gamrot snaps Jalin Turner’s five-fight finish streak tonight at UFC 285.
