UFC featherweight champ Max Holloway may have to wait a little bit longer for the UFC to take a trip to his native Hawaii.

“Blessed” has taken the UFC’s featherweight division by storm since suffering his last Octagon loss to Conor McGregor back in 2013, racking up a ridiculous 11 fight win streak over some of the division’s finest. Holloway was able to capture the interim featherweight strap back in December when he finished former 155-pound champ Anthony Pettis in the third round of their UFC 206 meeting.

He followed that up with a third round knockout win over 145-pound legend Jose Aldo in his own backyard of Brazil to unify the promotion’s featherweight titles. After the bout, Holloway continued to campaign heavily for the UFC to take a trip over to the islands of Hawaii, however, UFC President Dana White says that’s easier said than done (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“Nobody wants to fly to Hawaii and do a show more than me and my staff,” White said. “Who wouldn’t want to go there? And the media? Everybody wants to go there. It’s a tough one to pencil.

“They don’t have an arena. They have the outside bowl. I’m terrified to do anything outside with fighting. I used to spend a lot of time in Hawaii early on when we bought the company because there were a lot of good fights out there. It rains every 10 minutes. It’s raining, and then it’s beautiful out … it’s raining, then it’s beautiful out. It’s scary, man.”

The UFC has been doing a ton of things they never thought they’d do lately, opening up a new female 145-pound division to build around Cris Cyborg in addition to being on the brink of creating an Ultimate Fighter tournament to crown an inaugural 125-pound champ. Given recent developments, White said he’s done saying ‘no’ and we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

“Six months ago, I said we wouldn’t do the (women’s) 125-pound division,” White said. “So I’m not saying no anymore. We’ll see what happens.”

As for his featherweight champion’s current run through the division, White couldn’t be happier for the 25-year-old title holder, praising his personality and the fact that Hawaii once again has a UFC champ

“He’s awesome,” White said. “If you look at his run, it’s been amazing. He’s a good kid. Hawaii finally has a champ again.”

Max Holloway Says Jose Aldo Didn’t Want To Fight At UFC 212

25-year-old Max Holloway completed his rise to the top of the UFC’s featherweight division in the main event of UFC 212 earlier this month (June 3, 2017), finishing Jose Aldo in the third round to become the undisputed 145-pound champion.

Despite losing the first two rounds, Holloway took note of how Aldo was reacting to his movements, and “Blessed” recently said that the Brazilian was often ‘jumping back’:

“When I was putting my hand out and stuff, every time I’d put it, he would shut it down,” Holloway told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “He would throw something, he would do something reactive. Every time in the beginning rounds when I feinted at him, he was jumping back. I [saw these] big motions from him and he was countering super fast at certain things I was doing.”

Towards the tail end of the second round and into the third, Holloway began to loosen up, letting his hands go and taunting Aldo. It was at this point that Holloway said he realized that Aldo didn’t want to fight:

“I told myself, he’s not firing,” Holloway said. “It’s time to taunt. Let’s taunt. Let’s see if he cracks me. I taunted him — I put my hands up for a couple of seconds. And he didn’t do nothing. I was like OK, I’m gonna do it again. And he did nothing. I was like man, this guy don’t want to fight.”

“These guys are playing checkers,” Holloway said. “I’m out here playing chess. When they figure it out, it’s too late.”

Despite the slow start that many viewers clearly saw taking place from him, Holloway says the fight with Aldo went exactly according to his game plan, and now the young Hawaiian plans to lead MMA into a new era:

“I already knew our game plan was gonna work,” Holloway said. “There’s enough tape. Aldo, he’s one of the greatest ever, but it’s just time for a new era. It’s time for the new wave of guys, us young guys are coming up and we’re proving it. We’re showing to the world that we’re here to stay, we’re taking forever. MMA is forever evolving. You either evolve with the sport or you get left behind. I’m trying to lead the back. I’m trying to sprint.”

What do you make of Holloway’s assessment of the fight?

Max Holloway Not Backing Down From Edgar or Swanson

Max Holloway is down to defend his title against anyone, that includes Frankie Edgar and Cub Swanson.
