Frankie Edgar suffered an emotional defeat to Max Holloway over the weekend (Sat. July 27, 2019) at UFC 240.

“The Answer” was outclassed by the Hawaiian after five rounds, with “Blessed’s” featherweight title on the line. After failing for the third time to capture 145-pound gold, there has been a lot of talk about Edgar possibly cutting down to bantamweight to try a championship run there.

Edgar’s coach, Ricardo Almeida, was asked about such a move during an interview with MMA Fighting. Almeida sounded open to the idea, as such a move would present Edgar with some very interesting matchups.

“We’ve been talking about this for a while, telling him to move down to 135 pounds, but he never really wanted it, he was never really interested,” Almeida said. “What Frankie wants is to be the best in the world. Frankie wants to win this second belt.

“And if he sees a path to get to that belt in that weight class, I’m sure he would really consider it. And I think he’d probably have that path. It doesn’t make sense for him to go down just for a fight, but if it’s for a title run and become champion again, I think everyone wants to see that.

“It would be incredible to see him fighting (Henry) Cejudo, (T.J.) Dillashaw, Dominick Cruz, all those beasts in that weight class — except for Marlon (Moraes) [laughs].”

Currently, bantamweight is ruled by double champ Henry Cejudo. “The King Of Cringe” has actually expressed interest in competing against Edgar before. Had Edgar emerged victorious against Holloway, Cejudo wanted to jump up to challenge “The Answer” for the featherweight title. It will be interesting to see if the matchup still interests Cejudo at 135 pounds.

This past weekend’s (Sat. July 27, 2019) UFC 240 defeat was a tough one for Frankie Edgar.

“The Answer” came up short in the main event against Max Holloway with the Hawaiian’s featherweight strap on the line. Holloway outclassed the former lightweight champion en route to a decision victory. Edgar was visibly upset after the defeat, holding back tears. He posted the following statement on his Instagram days removed from the loss.

“I took a day to travel home and sulk in my sorrows and while my heart is still broken I’m still proud of my performance. I will never be ok with losing but I take solace into losing to a man like Max, a true champion that represents himself, his family, and our sport like no other.

“I can take this loss like a man and show my children that failing and getting knocked down is ok just as long as we get back to our feet to fight again. I’m far from done but right now I just want to enjoy my family. Thanks to my team for always having me prepared to the fullest, getting ready for Max was a daunting task but yet they had me ready.

“Thank you to all the fans for their outpouring of love and support through out my career. And special thanks to my Family and my Wife for being my backbone and letting me know what is truly important in this life of mine. till the next time…..#Fe“

There has been a lot of speculation in regards to what’s next for Edgar. Many have called for him to drop down to 135 pounds after now three failed attempts at capturing featherweight gold. One thing is for sure, Edgar still has a lot of fight left in him, and he’s by no means done competing. He made that very clear after the bout.

UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway and Dana White have differing views on the former’s future at 155 pounds.

Holloway got back on the win column with a dominant decision victory over Frankie Edgar at UFC 240 this past weekend. It followed his April decision loss to Dustin Poirier for the interim lightweight title.

White — who had previously called for Holloway to move up — was now adamant that featherweight was the right weight class for “Blessed”:

“I think his last performance at ’55 ends the conversation of him going up to ’55,” White said at the UFC 240 post-fight press conference (via BJ Penn). “I used to think that he looked big at ’45 and then I realized how small he looked at ’55.”

Holloway, however, took issue with those comments:

“Dana changes his mind everyday,” he responded. “Tomorrow he might be like, ‘hey Max we need a heavyweight fight.’ So, I don’t know. Dana’s mind is all over the place. I gotta respect the boss, but at the end of the day it is what it is. I know if an opportunity comes up there and they come calling, we won’t shy away.”

Holloway Not Ruling Out Lightweight Return

Holloway didn’t rule out a return to lightweight earlier this month either. Having only had six weeks to prepare for Poirier, he believes a full camp will showcase a different result:

“That was seven weeks to fight day, so I only had six weeks,” he said at a recent media lunch. “We were still coming off of the December thing and was figuring stuff out.

“We’ll see what happens when I make the move and decide to put on more muscle and this and that. There’s always a narrative that people try to explore like, ‘He had to be there. He had to weigh this and that.’ There’s no difference.”
