Daniel Cormier blood

Beloved UFC legend Daniel Cormier was working as a broadcaster during the UFC Jacksonville fights and was left with a bit of a bloody shirt after a post-fight interview with Maycee Barber.

The Barber and Amanda Ribas fight was a fiery barnburner. Both women seemed to be firing on all cylinders, and the bout soon developed into an exciting brawl. While both fighters had their fair share of moments, Maycee Barber was definitely looking to be in the lead. Both fighters were hurt on different occasions, but, ultimately Barber found the opportunity in the second round to end things with a ferocious swarm of brutal ground and pound shots.

Daniel Cormier interviews Maycee Barber after the Amanda Ribas fight and is left with a bloody shirt

The bloodshed and carnage were real when Barber and Ribas collided in the cage, and none other than Daniel Cormier was there to conduct the post-fight interview after the action ended.

Barber was practically dripping blood, some of which was her own, and some of it belonged to Ribas. Before the interview, Barber must have cleaned up off camera, but, as she went to talk to DC: still had a bloody towel in her hand which she continued to wipe blood onto. As the two drew closer together, the bloody towel in her hand must have made contact with DC’s shirt and transmitted the blood.

The interview itself was not very noteworthy otherwise, but, the fight itself was tremendous. ‘The Future’ did indeed get her performance bonus, and Barber proved that she is indeed on a fast track to the top of the women’s division.

Maycee Barber is determined to run it back with the last woman to beat her inside the Octagon. That just happens to be reigning flyweight world champion, Alexa Grasso.

‘The Future’ lived up to her moniker on Saturday, scoring an impressive second-round TKO against Amanda Ribas in the UFC Jacksonville co-main event. The win will likely get her into the division’s top ten come Monday, but she admittedly has some work to do before snagging herself a title opportunity. Following her impressive performance inside the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena, Barber expressed her interest in a rematch with reigning flyweight queen Alexa Grasso, whether UFC gold is on the line or not.

“I’ve been saying it time and time again, you know, whether Alexa wins against Valentina [Shevchenko] or not, I do want that rematch,” Barber told media members during the UFC Jacksonville post-fight press conference. “So, we’ll see. You know, that would be ideal. But, we’ll see. I’m gonna go back and talk to Hunter [Campbell] and Mick [Maynard] and the team to figure it out” (h/t MMA Mania).

Maycee Barber Has Some More Work to Do Before Securing a Rematch with Alexa Grasso

Alexa Grasso has won five straight inside the Octagon, including a 2021 unanimous decision win over Maycee Barber. In March, Grasso shocked the world when she submitted Valentina Shevchenko to capture the flyweight crown in a stunning upset. Grasso is currently scheduled to defend her title against ‘Bullet’ on September 16 when the UFC returns to Sin City’s T-Mobile Arena.

Like Grasso, Maycee Barber finds herself on a five-fight win streak but knows that she will need to keep marching forward and adding names to her hit list before earning another crack at Grasso.

“I’ve evolved so much since that fight, and that’s why I want to get the rematch. Whether she’s the champ or not, I definitely want that rematch because I have evolved as a fighter, and I love the spot that I’m in,” Barber stated. The only way I get to a rematch is by continuing to progress and continuing to put on performances and go out and show the world what I’m capable of.”

Maycee Barber scored the biggest win of her career in an absolutely thrilling war with fellow flyweight fan favorite Amanda Ribas at UFC Jacksonville.

Amanda Ribas came out looking to put the pressure on early, but was it Barber who made her mark in the opening round, landing a series of solid right hands before delivering a vicious elbow in the clinch that busted open Ribas’ nose. With the blood flowing, the ladies took things to the ground, where Barber dropped a series of bombs before the round came to an end.

Unhappy with being the only one bleeding inside the Octagon, Amanda Ribas landed a stiff right hand that got Barber’s nose leaking like a faucet. Perhaps that was a mistake, as the sight of Barber’s own blood appeared to cause a switch in her intensity. Barber fired back with a brilliantly-timed high kick that connected clean but failed to put Ribas down. Though she was clearly feeling the effects. Ribas began to backpedal at that point which prompted Barber to move in and unleash a flurry of strikes that ultimately sent Ribas crashing to the canvas.

Pouncing on her opponent, Barber delivered a series of ground-and-pound strikes until the referee determined that he had seen enough.

Official Result: Maycee Barber def. Amanda Ribas via TKO (strikes) at 3:42 of Round 2

Julianna Pena criticized for mocking Amanda Nunes’ retirement at UFC 289: ‘It was cringey’

Julianna Pena

Maycee Barber was not a fan of the way Julianna Pena conducted herself during Amanda Nunes‘ retirement speech at UFC 289 earlier this month.

Nunes and Pena were originally scheduled to scrap in a mildly anticipated trilogy bout in the Great White North before ‘The Venezuelan Vixen’ was forced to withdraw due to an injury. Determined to keep her spot on the card, Amanda Nunes sought another opponent and found one in top-five ranked contender Irene Aldana. Unfortunately, Aldana forgot to bring her fighting spirit to Canada and suffered a lopsided unanimous decision defeat at the hands of ‘The Lioness’ inside Rogers Centre.

With her hand raised once again, Amanda Nunes appeared to be primed for a trilogy bout with Julianna Pena. Instead, ‘The Lioness’ announced her retirement from the sport, guaranteeing that Pena would never get the fight she’s been lobbying for since handing the bantamweight title back to Nunes nearly a year ago. Upset by the news, Julianna Pena was spotted screaming and booing throughout Nunes’ retirement speech and even considered storming the Octagon before cooler heads prevailed.

Maycee Barber, who returns to the Octagon on Saturday night in an effort to continue her meteoric rise to the top of the flyweight division, shared her candid thoughts on Pena’s conduct during Nunes’ emotional retirement speech.

“The only thing I didn’t like was how much Julianna was talking crap,” Barber told reporters on Wednesday at the UFC Jacksonville media event. “That was the only thing that was like, that’s just cringey. But, that was probably the only thing that I thought about the retirement that I didn’t like, and I wish Amanda all the success in the world.”

Maycee Barber Suggests Things Would Not Have Ended Well for Julianna Pena in Third Fight with Amanda Nunes

With Amanda Nunes now out of the picture, Julianna Pena will likely find herself as one of the two women vying for the newly-vacated bantamweight title later this year. A situation Barber believes ‘The Venezuelan Vixen’ should be grateful for, implying that things would not have gone well for Pena had the trilogy gone down as originally planned.

“I think that was very stupid,” Barber said. “You never know what’s going on in someone’s life. And if she wanted to call it done, she called it done. Who’s to say you can’t retire? If Amanda hadn’t retired and she fought Julianna, I think that Julianna got out very easy on that, having the shot at keeping the belt” (h/t MMA Junkie).

Julianna Pena shocked the world with a second-round submission over Amanda Nunes in December 2021, but many fans were quick to discredit Pena’s win, believing Nunes simply neglected to take her opponent seriously. Those opinions were somewhat vindicated seven months later when Nunes handily defeated Pena in their UFC 277 rematch to reclaim the 135-pound crown.

We’ll never find out just how the trilogy fight would have gone down, but considering the lack of interest in their third meeting from the get-go, we suspect MMA fans are perfectly fine with that.

Maycee Barber

US-born UFC fighter Maycee Barber has had dangerous run-ins with a stalker during her MMA career. This stalker was caught, arrested, and has been sentenced to ten years behind bars.

In an interview with Middle Easy, Maycee Barber explained the situation:

“I had a pretty serious stalker situation which went on for about two-three years. At the time that I missed weight, that was when he was not in jail and he was somewhere in Denver and I was fighting in Denver so I was [under] super high stress. They had the SWAT after him, the security at the fight had a picture of him and knew, ‘Hey, this is the guy. Nobody lets this guy in.’

This occurrence happened in 2018 when Barber faced Hannah Cifers in Denver, USA. She continued:

That happened during my weight cut so I was really stressed out. That’s not an excuse, I did what I could and I tried to make the weight and I missed the weight so that’s on me and I still wanted that fight so we made it work. But the end of that story is he’s in jail now. He’s being sentenced to like 10 years.” [Transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting]

Maycee Barber says most female UFC athletes can relate

Maycee Barber went on to add that every female athlete in the UFC would likely have a similar story to hers. She added:

“It’s not just me. Every female athlete is gonna have that. Every female is gonna have that. This world is dark and dirty and I feel like social media has allowed people to just say whatever they want and have no repercussions whatsoever. I don’t read through messages and it sucks because there’s times where there’s messages from young girls, young people, that are good, but the stalker that I had was impersonating a young girl so it’s hard to really decipher and figure out who is who and what’s what. So to protect my own self, I just try not to respond at all.”

Currently, in the octagon, Barber is on a three-fight win streak. She has impressive wins over Jessica Eye, Montana De La Rosa, and Miranda Maverick. At merely the age of 24, she has eight fights in the UFC and is a notable fighter to keep an eye on. She will likely be back in early 2023.
