McGregor Predicts Early Doom For Mayweather In Eight-Ounce Gloves

The MMA and boxing worlds woke up to a deluge of Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather news this morning, with most of it centering on the controversial “knockdown” video of McGregor’s former sparring partner Paulie Malignaggi that was released by Dana White last night.

That all-out drama has seemed to have taken away a significant part of the hype for the actual fight, which still has tickets available from the T-Mobile Arena. But there have been some storylines about the real boxing action scheduled to take place in the ring on August 26. A big part of that was this week’s news that the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) was actually considering eight-ounce gloves for the fight after originally being set to use 10-ounce gloves.

If that indeed turns out to be the reality, McGregor isn’t giving “Money” a chance to last long. He offered his opinion on the change yesterday at his media workout from Las Vegas (transcribed by MMA Mania), noting that thinks it would be an early night for Mayweather were the glove size to get smaller:

“If we’re eight ounces I’m struggling to give him two rounds. That’s the gods’ honest truth. The only reason I maybe give him two rounds is because in this game the referee stops me from pounding his head into the canvas. And he has 10 seconds to recover. That’s the only reason he might get to the second round.”

“The Notorious” then expanded upon why he’s the tougher man compared to Mayweather, noting that his experience in all aspects of martial arts will give him the advantage even if they are meeting in the boxing great’s arena:

“I move different. I strike different,” McGregor said. “I’m from a different game. I’m from a more ruthless game. You can sugarcoat it any way you want. We get smacked with elbows and we don’t cry. We just have to eat it. We get a smack of a shin bone, a knee, a foot, a heel, and you’ve got to just handle it yourself. So that’s the game I come from.”

McGregor has a point there, but facing one of boxing’s all-time greats in a competition of his glaring strong suit won’t allow ‘The Notorious’ to use the brutal all-around aspects of fighting that he mentioned at the media workout.

Most feel that if McGregor has any sort of a chance against Mayweather, he’s going to have to land a huge power shot early in the fight, and reducing the glove size to a weight closer to the four-ounce gloves he’s accustomed to in the UFC would certainly give him a leg up on “Money,” who would in turn gain an even bigger advantage in speed.

Regardless of the particulars, however, it’s still considered a long shot that McGregor can even hang with Mayweather, let alone knock him out. Not surprisingly, the Irishman and predicting he’ll not only be able to compete with “Money,” but will knock him out as well. Will a smaller glove size help him accomplish that potentially legendary goal?

In the hours right after his media workout from the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas, Nev. yesterday, another veritable windfall of news has surfaced surrounding Conor McGregor’s ongoing drama with former boxing champion Paulie Malignaggi.

The fire was taken to a new level late Friday night when Dana White released footage of the sparring session in question where Malignaggi was rumored to have been dropped by McGregor, photos of which caused Malignaggi to leave the lightweight champion’s training camp for his super fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. and go on a literal tour of McGregor-blasting interviews.

The footage has certainly shed some light on the uncertainty of if Malignaggi was dropped, even if he may have been falling off balance in the clip. The bad blood has begun reaching another pinnacle of tension, but McGregor’s longtime coach John Kavanagh offered a different point of view in an interview with MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani after the media workout.

To him, he’s not paying attention to all of the noise and media coverage, yet is actually thankful to have had a professional like Malignaggi to spar with his pupil:

“I haven’t actually seen anything. You’re scrolling through news articles and I’ve seen he’s obviously done quite a few I’ve genuinely not watched one. The only thing I would say is I was very grateful to have him here, we got two great spars out of him. I’m very confident in Conor’s skills, but the engineer in me would have to be honest and say I hadn’t seen him spar a high-level boxer until I saw him spar Paulie, and it was nice to be confirmed that I was very sure his technique and skills would cross over to this area, and that only confirmed it for me, so I’m very happy with Paulie; I’m very glad he was part of the team.

“To be honest, I expected to get two good spars out of him anyway. The fact that it went sour and he’s unhappy; well, what comment can I make on that? That’s up to him. And I’ve literally not watched one of his 50 interviews.”

Found of Dublin, Ireland’s Straight Blast Gym (SBG), Kavanagh made it a point to align his allegiance with MMA, a sport that’s obviously brought McGregor his massive fame. His passion of MMA is one that Kavanagh isn’t worried “The Notorious” will return to despite rumors suggesting he will retire after netting a rumored $100 million payday against Mayweather.

He knows Malignaggi is angling for a fight with McGregor, but Kavanagh wants his top fighter back in the octagon before the year is up:

“I don’t pay too much attention to worry. Conor loves fighting, and Conor he loves mixed martial arts. He’s of course going to have a nice bank account when this is all over with, but you can only drive you car at a time, you can only have one meal at a time, and fighting is in his heart, it’s in his blood. I have no doubt he’ll be back in the cage.”

“Well, I have seen those articles and those headlines, and that seems to be Conor, he goes from one major fight to the next. I would hope it would be MMA next. But yeah, look, MMA’s my love, MMA’s my passion, I want to see him back in the UFC before the year’s over.”

As for the nefarious sparring session, Kavanagh stated that he believed the footage would be released by rounds after the fight before admitting while he was no expert in boxing, it did seem that McGregor did knock Malignaggi down in the video:

“As far as I’m aware, the rounds will be released after the fight. Obviously after the fight. We’re hardly gonna release 12 rounds of homework before the fight. But, I won’t claim to be an expert of boxing, but I saw him get hit in the head and fall down, so that to me looks like a knockdown.”

Kavanagh was then asked about the reported change to eight-ounce gloves for McGregor’s fight with Mayweather, something he believes would benefit their team:

“Oh, the lighter the glove the better for us.”

The combat sports world was thrown into minor upheaval a few hours ago when UFC President Dana White released video of Conor McGregor sparring former boxing champ Paulie Malignaggi where McGregor had supposedly dropped Malignaggi, inciting a huge media backlash from the retired fighter.

The debate immediately began as to whether or not McGregor had actually dropped Malignaggi with a big punch, as it appeared he had been stumbling somewhat before the shot landed. But it certainly didn’t help him stay upright and the infamous photo, which was the source of him leaving McGregor’s camp and blasting them in countless spots, was obviously taken during a moment where he had claimed he had been pushed down.

So Malignaggi was not surprisingly quick to respond to White posting the video, claiming he had now been dragged into the punch and then pushed down by McGregor’s right hand:

Malignaggi wouldn’t give it up as his many haters bound together to claim confirmation he had actually been knocked down by their hero. He continued to insist he was pushed down by McGregor’s right hand, resulting in a fake knockdown:

And not to be outdone, Malignaggi then took things up a nothc by absolutely blasting White, calling him a ‘cuball ass fraud’ who saw all 12 rounds of the sparring session and knew what happened, and was ‘kissing his a**’ afterward:

So the proverbial gloves are off, and the saga between McGregor and Malignaggi is more heated and dramatic and ever, just when you thought it couldn’t get any more of either or those.

With exactly two weeks remaining until McGregor clashes with Floyd Mayweather in a fight called the biggest combat sporting event ever, the usually loud ‘Money’ has become almost an afterthought as the McGregor vs. Malignaggi drama becomes a three-headed monster in its own right.

Are you interested to see where it goes from here, or have you had enough of the seemingly never-ending circus?

Dana White Reveals Conor McGregor vs. Paulie Malignaggi Sparring Footage

The past couple of weeks have seen a feud like few others develop between UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and former boxing champion Paulie Malignaggi to the point where it’s completely dominated nearly all MMA headlines just weeks before “The Notorious’” anticipated boxing super fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr on August 26.

The story goes that Malignaggi, who had a bit of pre-installed beef with McGregor already, went to the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas to spar with McGregor and help him prepare to box Mayweather, a champion whom many feels is the best of all-time, in his first pro boxing bout. Malignaggi painted a picture where he was treated extremely unfavorably by McGregor’s camp, telling any and all media outlets that would listen the Irish UFC champion was extremely cheap and disrespectful to a sparring partner who was trying to help him.

But the straw that broke the camel’s back was when photos surfaced online of Malignaggi supposedly getting dropped by the much less experienced MMA star. Malignaggi left McGregor’s camp shortly after the photos were released and went on his whirlwind media tour to defend his name, demanding that full footage of the sparring session be released while insisting he ‘beat the brakes off’ McGregor.

Malignaggi claimed McGregor ‘whimpered’ when he was hit with his body shots and that the knockdown was merely a push, but late last night, UFC President Dana White released some footage of the sparring session on his official Instagram account showing that while Malignaggi did appear to be off balance and perhaps even falling, he was also nailed by an uppercut from McGregor that at least appeared to help him fall down. Check it out:

White also released a video containing more footage of McGregor tagging Malignaggi while stating it was ‘for the people who think McGregor can’t box’:

It’s no surprise to see White jump to his star fighter’s aid and defend him, as he clearly has a job to do in promoting a fight that has been billed as the biggest combat sports of all-time but seems to be losing steam with tickets still available at outlandish prices and the overall heat cooling a bit after mixed reviews and some controversial moments during their circus-like world tour from a few weeks back.

The Malignaggi scene has seemed to take over any and all discussion about the fight, and while this would seem to clear it up in at least some way, discussions are going to be raging over whether or not McGregor truly dropped the veteran boxer based on the video. What do you think? Was Malignaggi just falling, or did the Irish superstar legitimately catch him with a strike that dropped him?
