Dual weight UFC champion Amanda Nunes is set to defend her 145lb title against top contender Megan Anderson at UFC 256 on December 12. Brett Okamoto of ESPN broke news for the featherweight title bout on social media, he wrote.

“Breaking: The GOAT returns on Dec. 12. Amanda Nunes (@Amanda_Leoa) vs. Megan Anderson (@MeganA_mma) has been agreed to for UFC 256 in December, per sources.”

Nunes has established herself as the best female fighter in MMA history during a six-year, 11-fight winning streak that dates back nearly six years. ‘The Lioness’ picked up the bantamweight belt at UFC 200 in 2016 and has since defended it five times. Nunes later became a two-division champion by taking out Cris ‘Cyborg’ Santos inside one round.

Lately, it has been speculated Nunes would retire from the sport. The Brazilian fed into that narrative during an interview after he most recent win over Felicia Spencer at UFC 250, she said.

“Ah, I don’t know, I’ve achieved everything I wanted. I’m well, I can go on with my life, maybe a new step, maybe find new talents, help some girls there…maybe be a coach, too.

“I’m in a moment that I can retire, you know, and I’m in a moment that I can fight. I’m fine. There’s nothing else to be done right now in the division. The Hall of Fame will come, for sure. My life going forward, if I do stop now, the UFC will give me every support I need to continue having my money and work.”

The UFC bosses appeared to have convinced Nunes to stick around and she will be back fighting sooner than most expected.

Anderson is the challenger charged with dethroning the most dominant female champion in MMA history. The former Invicta FC featherweight titleholder has had mixed form so far during her UFC career. Anderson has lost to Holly Holm and Felicia Spencer. She picked up a controversial win over former title challenger Cat Zingano in between those losses. Lately she has turned things around by scoring back-to-back wins over Norma Dumont and Zarah Fairn.

Megan Anderson will return to the Octagon at UFC 243 in Australia.

Several reports came out that she would indeed fight on the card, while MMA Junkie confirmed the news. Anderson will welcome UFC newcomer, Zarah Fairn dos Santos, who like the Aussie is a natural featherweight.

When Anderson was signed by the UFC after being the Invicta FC champion, many expected her to challenge Cris Cyborg. Yet, her path to the top has not been easy. In her debut, she dropped a decision to Holly Holm. Then, at UFC 235 beat Cat Zingano by TKO due to an eye injury. In her next fight, she fought Felicia Spencer where the expectation was the winner would fight the former featherweight champ. There, it was the Canadian who got a first-round submission to drop the Aussie to 1-2 inside the Octagon.

Dos Santos, meanwhile, is 6-2 as a pro and last fought back in December of 2017, according to available records. The French fighter has fought in promotions like BAMMA, Cage, and other European promotions.

She is a 5’10” featherweight so Anderson will have the size advantage in this one. But, this is good news for women’s featherweights as they are signing more of them.

UFC 243 goes down in Melbourne, Australia on Oct. 6 there (Oct. 5 in North America). The card is headlined by a middleweight title fight between Robert Whittaker and Israel Adesanya.

Who do you think will win the fight between Megan Anderson and Zarah Fairn dos Santos?
