Meryl Streep's callous comment about MMA motivated Conor McGregor to prove her wrong with 'Road House'

While attending the New York City premiere of his feature film debut, Conor McGregor revealed that Meryl Streep’s 2017 dig on mixed martial arts motivated him to prove that he could shine both in the cage and on the silver screen.

McGregor chews the scenery in Doug Liman’s remake of the 1989 action classic Road House, originally starring the late Patrick Swayze. This time around, Jake Gyllenhaal steps into the lead role of Dalton, a former UFC fighter who takes a job at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys and finds himself unintentionally waging war with a corrupt businessman who’s been terrorizing the small fictitious town of Glass Key for years.

Throughout the filming, which had its fair share of troubles, McGregor admits to carrying a chip on his shoulder following the three-time Academy Award winner’s mean-spirited comment about MMA during her Cecil B. DeMille award acceptance speech at the Golden Globes seven years ago.

“Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners,” Streep said in 2017. “And if we kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.”

Meryl Streep’s comment motivated conor mcGregor to prove himself in his acting debut

Streep’s comment received a roaring round of applause from those in attendance, but her statement understandably infuriated professional fighters.

“Fighting is the most beautiful form of art, and you know, it’s a great thing to come into this game, which is also art,” McGregor told The Hollywood Reporter when asked about Streep’s comment. “I was really taken aback because fighting is an art. It’s brutal also, so I can understand. It’s not for somebody to make a mistake; it’s real artistry for those who do what we do, so I came in with maybe a little chip on my shoulder and wanting to represent my sport and my art, give my best in this arena.”

In Road House, Conor McGregor plays Knox, an over-the-top villain called in by the film’s big bad to take out Gyllenhaal’s Dalton. From the moment he makes his onscreen debut — walking bare-assed down a public street in search of a snazzy jacket to wear — you can’t help, but appreciate the ridiculousness of it all. Especially as an MMA fan knowing that the former two-division champion is essentially playing himself with the volume turned slightly up.

Sharing some behind-the-scenes details, McGregor credited Gyllenhaal with giving him some acting tips throughout the shoot and revealed that he tried out multiple variations of his sandwich-loving skull-cracker before Liman and Co. landed on the one you see in the film.

“Jake taught me many things about acting,” McGregor said. “He was just so helpful, so patient. Liman, who I was taking my direction from, guided me on how he wanted the character. I made sure I gave a few different variations. I feel like I gave a few different versions of Knox. I, of course, was going to be unsure with which one they went with in the end, but when I saw the [final] movie and saw the choices, I understood what they wanted with the character. They are very happy with how Knox came out.”

Scott Coker Talks Rousey, Streep, & CM Punk in New Interview

In a new interview with Newsweek, Bellator MMA CEO Scott Coker has revisited Meryl Streep’s controversial comments on MMA, and covered just how he would approach things if she were to turn up at a Bellator event. Streep, who spoke out against U.S. President Elect Donald Trump at Sunday’s Golden Globes, dragged the sport of MMA into the crossfire when she stated that

Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. And if we kick them all out you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.

In an excellent response to Streep’s comments, Coker publicly invited her to attend a Bellator show, stating that he was a life long martial artist, and that

The global sport of mixed martial arts celebrates male and female athletes from all around the world who work years tirelessly honing their craft and- yes- art. They come from every country and every walk of life. We at Bellator support them and honor their skill.

He then invited her to be his guest at Bellator 170 later this month.

Speaking to Newsweek, Coker confirmed that he had not heard from Streep or her people, but that were she to attend, he’d attempt to educate her on the sport.

Part of her statement is a lack of understanding of what mixed martial arts is. I would explain it to her. As an ambassador for mixed martial arts, I’d explain how the event was unfolding and spend a lot of time educating her on how there is an art form attached to it.

He went on to address the downfall of Ronda Rousey as well. Rousey, who lost her second consecutive fight in December at UFC 207, has been the focus of retirement speculation ever since. It’s the will she or won’t she question that has everyone talking. Coker, who gave Rousey her big break back in Strikeforce, feels it’s time for the former champ to re-evaluate everything – including her camp.

She should take some time off to evaluate all the people around her, including her camp and her trainers, and see if there was a mistake made in the efforts of the people around her.

Coker was also asked about CM Punk, and admitted that Bellator MMA would be interested in the former pro wrestling star – were he not under contract to the UFC.

SBG’s John Kavanagh Tells Meryl Streep to ‘F**k Off’

Kavanagh gives Meryl Streep a dressing down, following her unexpected dismissal of MMA at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday.

The highly decorated actress delivered a critique of Donald Trump at the televised awards on Sunday, but has drawn major criticism from the world of Mixed Martial Arts for her attempt to draw a comparison between politics and sport.

The Hollywood legend stated:

“What is [Hollywood] anyway? It’s just a bunch of people from other places. Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. And if we kick them all out you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.”

While Trump himself responded to the comments in a tweet, Dana White was also vocal in his response, in an interview given to TMZ which you can watch here.

Another man who certainly took offence to what has been described as an ignorant assessment of the sport is Conor McGregor’s coach, and SBG wizard, John Kavanagh. In a message posted to his Facebook account on Tuesday, Kavanagh said:

“A lot has been made of Meryl Streep’s ‘calling out’ of Mixed Martial Arts as not being ‘the arts’. She’s 100% right, it’s sport. I was just impressed she said mixed martial arts and not ‘cage fighting’. People probably got a little defensive with the way she was clearly saying ‘the arts’ were so much superior to ‘sport’. What would we ever do without Hollywood!!?” The great American writer Joseph Campbell said the closest he ever came to a truly spiritual experience was through athletics.

Kavanagh added: “I wouldn’t like to think of one activity better than the other – sport or art. Just do whatever you enjoy. I think people’s main issue with her teary well acted speech was that she tried to pass herself, and the rest of her ultra rich and ultra entitled liberal friends, off as ‘an outsider’.

“Yes Meryl, you’re just like an illegal immigrant or starving refugee. Fuck off. Just carry on adding to your 100s of millions you’ve earned from playing pretend. You’ve known nothing but extreme wealth and privilege your whole life, so don’t look down your nose at sport which has probably helped a lot more people than the expensive drama schools you attended. Happy Tuesday haha!” he added.

Video: Dana White Calls Streep a ‘Stupid’ ‘Uppity 80 Year Old’

Dana White responds to Meryll Streep’s comments given at her speech at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday.

In a speech directed at incoming president Donald Trump, Streep also took aim at the sport of MMA which has led to a backlash from [UFC President] Dana White.

In appearing to suggest that diversity was under threat in Hollywood, the multi-award winning actress commented:

“If we kick [outsiders and foreigners] out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts — which are not the arts.”

White had choice words in relation to Streep’s targeting of MMA:

“It’s not going to be everybody’s thing, and the last thing I expect is for an uppity 80-year-old lady to be in our demographic and love mixed martial arts,” White said.

“Of course it’s an art,” White added. “These fighters, these men and women, are so talented. They train their whole lives to be the best in the world. To say something stupid like that is like saying, ‘She’s not a talented actress,’ which she is. She’s a very talented actress.”

To say that Streep has earned any new fans in the MMA community would certainly be a stretch.

Dana White Blasts ‘Uppity 80-Year-Old Woman’ Meryl Streep

Actress Meryl Streep gave her opinion of mixed martial arts (MMA) at the Golden Globes last night (Jan. 8, 2016), saying that it’s ‘not an art’. This comment has received quite a bit of attention throughout the MMA community and Bellator President Scott Coker even invited Streep to attend Jan. 21’s Bellator 170 in order to show her the true nature of the sport.

UFC President Dana White also commented on the matter when speaking to TMZ Sports earlier today (Jan. 9, 2016), although he wasn’t as cordial as Coker. In fact, White called Streep an ‘uppity’ 80-year-old woman and advised her to ‘change the channel’ if she wasn’t a fan of the sport:

“It’s not going to be everybody’s thing and the last thing in the world I expect is an uppity, 80-year-old lady to be in our demographic and love mixed martial arts,” White said.

“If you really look at who follows the UFC and is into MMA, it’s everybody,” added White. “Like I said, I don’t expect an 80-year-old woman to be a big fan of MMA. If you don’t like it, change the channel.”

The UFC boss then said that mixed martial arts is certainly an art despite what Streep had to say about it:

“Of course it’s an art. The fighters, the men and the women, are so talented. They train their whole lives to become the best in the world and the people who get into the UFC are the elite of the elite. To say something stupid like that is like saying she’s not a talented actress, which she is.”

Do you agree with White’s comments?

Fallout: The Golden Globes And Meryl Streep’s “Attack” On MMA

Who would’ve thought the most MMA action we would see over the weekend would come in the form of Meryl Streep. The long time actress was honored with a lifetime achievement award at this past weekend’s Golden Globe. After being welcomed to the stage by Viola Davis, Streep began he speech in earnest. Midway through, Streep made a joke at the expense of fans and athletes of the sports of football as well as mixed martial arts. If you haven’t heard the details then let me fill you in.

Meryl Streep is not a fan of MMA. At least in the context of the sport being an art form. On a speech that touched largely on how foreigners have helped to build Hollywood into the powerful machine that it is today, Streep went on to take a few jabs at some popular sports as a means of highlighting the potential “dark road” America could be traveling towards.

“Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners,” Streep said. “If we kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.”

Now, let’s just unpack that statement a bit. Putting MMA and football in the same sentence is an interesting choice to begin with. One is beloved as the greatest sport in the world, while the other is literally a sport represented all over the world. Football is firmly an American past time enjoyed in other countries, but not as fiercely as it is in the US. Mixed martial arts is a sport that can be traced back through history from multiple different countries, each of them treating the endeavor with an immense amount of admiration and respect. MMA organizations feature competitors, both men and women, who hail from different countries all around the globe. If Streep’s point was to say that foreign exclusion will mean we’ll only have American past times as entertainment, then she could have potentially found some other example besides MMA, one of the most diverse sports out there.

Now, while the statement was designed to be merely a joke, it has produced a stream of complaints and outrage among the MMA community. But here’s the question that we as MMA fans, practioners, and competitors should all take into consideration. While her statements may have been hurtful to some extent, we have to ask ourselves about what message she was trying to get across.

Her statements of inclusion and respecting each other as human beings should be the shinning point that we all take away from her acceptance speech. Rather than focusing on the negative in terms of her denigration of sports she may not be interested in herself, there was still a very powerful message in her words. The big problem is that as much as free speech is a right for every American, educating herself on the facts before throwing a collective community under the bus should have been a consideration. Scott Coker, President of Bellator MMA, may have had the best response to the subject.

If she doesn’t think MMA is art, then that’s fine. After all it’s her opinion. But you and I know better. The intricacies of the techniques, the mechanics needed to perform actions with perfect execution beg to differ with Streep’s statements. Go ahead and try to convince me that karate katas or forms in other traditional martial arts isn’t a thing of beauty, a venerable work of art even. Not everyone will look at it through that lens, but we as followers of MMA should learn to brush it off and accept that no matter what, it’s the opinion of one individual. How we conduct ourselves and how we treat the sport will prove that MMA is not only an art form, but one of the greatest in the world.

What are your thoughts on Meryl Streep’s statements about MMA?
