Former women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk could have the chance to regain her title soon.
Jedrzejczyk meets fellow contender Michelle Waterson in the UFC Tampa headliner which takes place October 12. The winner of the bout could stake a claim at the next title shot against Weili Zhang.
However, Jedrzejczyk claims victory over Waterson will land her the next crack at the title and it’s even written in her fight contract:
“We have in the contract that the win will get a duel of the strawweight category,” Jedrzejczyk said to a Polish outlet (translation via BJ Penn). “The fight for the title is closer than we think.
“After the victory with Michelle on October 12, I hope that in the first quarter of 2020 I will get a chance to return to the throne.”
It’s not clear if the same applies if Waterson wins, but for Jedrzejczyk, it’s another chance to become a two-time strawweight champion. The 32-year-old ruled over the division from 2015 to 2017 until she was knocked out by Rose Namajunas.
She would lose to Namajunas again in their rematch via unanimous decision before getting back to winning ways against Tecia Torres. Another attempt at UFC gold failed when she was outpointed by Valentina Shevchenko for the vacant flyweight title last year.
However, she will now look to establish a winning run and get back the title that was synonymous with her name.
Do you think Jedrzejczyk will get the job done at UFC Tampa?

Though she was disappointed at not getting a title shot, Michelle Waterson has the consolation of facing the former champion in Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
Waterson was recently announced as the headliner for UFC Tampa opposite Jedrzejczyk. However, there was initial talk that the fight would headline a UFC event in San Francisco. In the end, it was announced that Tampa would be the location for the strawweight headliner. Waterson, however, doesn’t know why the location was changed:
Waterson was previously campaigning for a title shot against champion Jessica Andrade. Instead, Weili Zhang was given the opportunity. Still, “The Karate Hottie” believes her fight with Jedrzejczyk is a championship fight on its own because of the latter’s legacy:
“I don’t know [why I didn’t get the title shot] and I might have stressed about it for a day but things like that are out of my control,” she explained. “Since I was signed to the UFC, I’ve had my eye on Joanna because she was the longest-reigning champ and when I was signed, she was the champ. So it would be my honor to be able to fight her in a five round fight and in my opinion, this is a championship fight.
“Yeah, obviously I was disappointed [in not getting the title shot] but the truth is, the strawweight division is a very stacked division. I think that Weili, I don’t think many people know about Weili, but she’s definitely a contender and I’m looking forward to watching that fight. The more people that the champ gets to fight, the better it is for me so then I can watch them fight and I have more time to scout them out. I understand everything happens for a reason and this is my journey and I’m just going to ride at the best way I know how.”

A women’s strawweight bout between Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Michelle Waterson is official and set to headline the UFC’s return to Tampa.
The fight was previously reported to be in the works last month, though no location was set at the time. However, it was announced by the promotion on Friday that it would take place October 12 at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida. Tickets are set to go on sale later this month.
Jedrzejczyk has gone 1-3 in her last four fights, having most recently suffered a unanimous decision defeat to Valentina Shevchenko for the vacant women’s flyweight title. She will now return to her natural weight class as she looks to regain her title.
As for Waterson, she has won three fights in a row and a win over the former champion could all but guarantee her getting the next crack at the title.
UFC Tampa will also see the return of Mackenzie Dern, who faces Amanda Ribas in a strawweight bout. Dern last competed at UFC 222 in March last year but has spent time away from the Octagon after giving birth to her daughter. Also on the cards is a flyweight bout between top contender Deiveson Figueiredo and Timothy Elliott.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk will return to her old stomping grounds at 115 pounds after a failed flyweight title bid. Jedrzejczyk is set to face Michelle Waterson at UFC on ESPN+ 19. Jedrzejczyk is set to face Michelle Waterson at UFC on ESPN+ 19. The action goes down from the Chase Center in San Francisco, California on October 12. The Polish striker has lost three of her last four fights. She was previously undefeated with a record of 14-0 and five successful strawweight title defenses under her belt.
However, her reign came to an end against Rose Namajunas in November of 2017 via first-round TKO. She was unable to regain the title in their rematch several months later, as she was outclassed by “Thug” after five rounds. Jedrzejczyk got back into the win column with a decision win over Tecia Torres in July of last year.
This past December, Jedrzejczyk faced former Muay Thai opponent Valentina Shevchenko for the vacant women’s flyweight title. Unfortunately for her, she was bested via unanimous decision. Now, Jedrzejczyk will return to strawweight to take on Waterson. According to American Top Team (ATT) owner Dan Lambert, speaking to BJPenn.com, Jedrzejczyk has been promised a strawweight title shot with a win over “The Karate Hottie.”
“I guess I’ll tell you after camp and how the weight cut went. She has the best chance to get a title shot at Strawweight. The UFC told her with a win she gets a title shot. I’m happy to see here have a clear path to get a title shot,” Lambert said. “With no clear path, she was not going to rush back. I’m happy to see her back training.”
Getting past Waterson will be no easy task. She is one of the best strikers in the division and has a slick ground game as well. Waterson is on a three-fight win streak over names such as Cortney Casey, Felice Herrig, and Karolina Kowalkiewicz. With a win over Jedrzejczyk, Waterson could be looking at a title opportunity herself.
What do you think about Jedrzejczyk being promised a title shot with a win over Waterson?
If Michelle Waterson hasn’t earned a title opportunity in Dana White’s eyes yet, she certainly has the opportunity to solidify herself as the next challenger now. ESPN reports that Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Waterson have verbally agreed to fight each other in October. Bout agreements have not yet been signed per the report, but verbal agreements […]
ESPN reports that Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Waterson have verbally agreed to fight each other in October. Bout agreements have not yet been signed per the report, but verbal agreements are in place for the pair to fight at the UFC Fight Night event on ESPN+ set for October 12. The UFC has not yet announced a venue as of this writing.
Jedrzejczyk once reigned as the undefeated and undisputed champion at 115 pounds before being stopped and defeated by Rose Namajunas in back-to-back fights. She also failed to capture the vacant 125-pound title against Valentina Shevchenko in December. As for Waterson, she’s on a three-fight win streak and comes off a decision victory over Jedrzejczyk’s fellow countrywoman, Karolina Kowalkiewicz, in March.
Currently, 115-pound champion Jessica Andrade is set to defend her title against Weili Zhang on August 31. With top contender Tatiana Suarez nursing injuries, the winner of Jedrzejczyk vs. Waterson could very well be the next challenger for the title. In a division with a ton of talent to go around, this is one of the best matchups to be made at this point in time.
What do you think about the matchup between Jedrzejczyk and Waterson?
