demian_maiaWell the UFC has been busy shuffling fights between event cards, with the news that UFC middleweight Demian Maia (12-2) will take on Mario Miranda (10-1) at UFC 118.

Maia had been scheduled to headline UFC Fight Night 22 against Alan Belcher, but Belcher suffered a detached retina and had to withdraw from the fight. The UFC then promoted a UFC 118 fight between Nate Marquardt and Rousimar Palhares to the main event of the UFN event.

The news comes via MMAjunkie.com, who noted that several sources confirmed the bout with them noting that it will take place on the main card of UFC 118.

Maia is looking to bounce back after a title fight loss to champion Anderson Silva last April in Abu Dhabi at UFC 112. This puts him at a 1-2 record in his past three fights after notching a win against Dan Miller at UFC 109 and a loss to Nate Marquardt at UFC 102.

Miranda is just 1-1 in the UFC and is looking to build off his first victory with the promotion having defeated David Loiseau at UFC 115 in Vancouver by TKO (punches). His first appearance, as well as his first career loss, came at the hands of Gerald Harris at UFC Fight Night: Florian vs. Gomi (UFN 21) by TKO.

UFC 118 features a lightweight title rematch between current champ Frankie Edgar and former champ BJ Penn. The event happens on Aug. 28 at TD Garden’s in Boston, Mass. and Spike TV will feature two preliminary bouts leading up to the PPV.

Matt Hughes Not Concerned With Being Oldest Fighter At UFC 117

Matt-HughesUFC hall of famer and two times UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes (44-7), isn’t concerned with being the oldest fighter taking part on this Saturday’s UFC 117 event in Oakland, California.

In a recent blog post from his personal website Matt-Hughes.com, Hughes talked about his preparations for his fight with Ricardo Almeida, and a recent interview with his hometown paper where he was asked his feelings on being the oldest fighter on the card.

Training was great for this fight. Had some tough workouts at my gym and also went out to Salt Lake City and got to train with Jeremy, his guys and Matt Pena. My three corners for this fight will be Robbie Lawler, Matt Pena and Jeremy Horn. I really feel that my cornermen are the best in the business.

Just did a little interview with my hometown paper, one of the questions was asking how I felt about being the oldest man on the card. I turned around and said that I appreciated him pointing that out to me and that I hadn’t even thought about it. To be honest, it doesn’t matter to me. I guess I’m just glad I’ve been able to have as long of a career as I have. So many other people out there who have fought in the UFC wouldn’t even think of fighting as long as I have. So I guess I look at it as a privilege.

I think Ricardo will be hungry for this fight, I’ve beaten two Gracies and a teammate and, back about ten years ago, I beat Ricardo himself in a grappling match in Abu Dhabi. So on one hand he’s got a lot of motivation and on the other he sees what I just listed and knows I’m a threat. I think he will come at me hard and try to get me down to the ground somehow. He wants to be on top of me, but I’m sure if he’s on the ground he’ll be happier than on his feet.

I don’t think my weight cut will be hard for this fight, as I’ve been doing good with my exercise and diet.

UFC 117: ROY NELSON talks Carwin’s loss to Lesnar from Steve Cofield on Vimeo.

In the video above, “TUF 10″ winner Roy “Big Country” Nelson (15-4) talks about his preparations for his upcoming UFC 117 bout with Junior dos Santos. Nelson also offers his opinion on the recent heavyweight title fight between champ Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin.

In another interview with the Las Vegas Sun, “Big Country” is happy to have a shot against Dos Santos as a victory will help catapult him to a title fight.

Nelson isn’t looking past his Brazilian opponent as he considers Dos Santos the top heavyweight in the UFC division, so a win over him will mean an easier fight for the title.

“If I could pick my way to the top, this is one of the fastest ways to do it,” Nelson said. “I wanted to fight for the belt my very first fight, so this is OK with me.”

“Hands down, I think he’s (Junior dos Santos) the best guy in the UFC right now,” Nelson said. “This is my title fight, because I look at it as I think this guy can beat the guy who has the belt. I think Junior is the best.”

He came to win the title and say yes to the fights others say no to.

“If I didn’t think I was the best in the world, I’d be fighting in another organization,” Nelson said. “I’m always the guy who wants to challenge myself.

“If you’re in (professional sports), you either know you’re a star or you’re not. If you question that, and think you can be replaced, then you probably can.”

Nate MarquardtWith the recent loss of Alan Belcher from the main event from Septembers UFC Fight Night 22 due to a detached retina, the promotion looked to find a replacement fighter to face Demian Maia, or a replacement bout to take their spot.

The UFC has decided to replace the match completely with a middleweight match between Nate Marquardt (29-9-2) vs. Rousimar Palhares (11-2). This bout had been scheduled for the main card of UFC 118 but will now headline the UFN 22 event. Maia has been removed from the event and no word was given as to who or when he’ll fight next.

UFC Fight Night 22 is set to take place on Sept. 15 at The Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Tex. with the main card being broadcast on Spike TV.

MMAjunkie.com reported the news on Monday and the UFC made the change official today.

Nate “The Great” is coming off a loss to Chael Sonnen at UFC 109, dropping a unanimous decision to the top middleweight contender in a bout that saw both men earn the “Fight of the Night” honor. Before that loss, the fighter had won three straight bouts including a win over Demian Maia at UFC 102 last year.

Palahares is on a three fight win streak and was serving day suspension for failing to let go of a submission hold on Polish fighter Tomasz Drwal. In the fight, Palahares quickly secured a heel hook on Drwal forcing the tap but continued to crank the submission until referee Kevin Mulhall stepped in to stop the fight. The Brazilian said he didn’t feel the tap and was waiting for the ref to end the match.
